First Years, Lesson Three

Landon walked into the Herbology greenhouse rather early for his third lesson of the semester with the first years. Last lesson had been quite fun and he was surprised with how successful each of his students were with the treasure hunt. Lucky for them, they would be going outside today and he was very excited to see how well they would do with their first harvest. They seemed like a trusty bunch and so he was confident that today's lesson was going to be yet another success.

"Morning first years!" Professor Carter exclaimed when he was sure everyone had taken their seat. "We are going to jump right into it today so there is plenty of time for the fun stuff. What's the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Halloween?" Landon pointed to a student near the back of the room. "Pumpkins!" they said excitedly, already beginning to get an idea of what they were going to be doing. "Yes, exactly right! 3 points to your house. We will be planting some pumpkins today. As I said before, I would like to get right into it, so..." With a flick of his wand, Landon watched as the board began writing notes by itself. "Once you've finished copying down these notes, come with me outside."

Notes said:
* The Pumpkin is believed to have originated in North America, where the Native Americans dried strips of Pumpkin and wove them into mats.

* The original name for the pumpkin was Pepon, which was Greek for large melon.

* The Pumpkin is widely known for being served at feasts as Pumpkin Pie, but its notoriety comes from its established tradition at Halloween.

* Pumpkins can also be used to celebrate good harvest, and at Christmas and thanksgiving where it is typically roasted.

After everyone was finally done copying down the notes, the professor slipped on his leather black gloves and walked outside with them. His tools, a spade, a watering can, and a rake were waiting for him at his section. The dirt looked ripe and eager for planting which Landon smiled at as he observed where his students would be working. Each station was in the shape of a huge rectangle. Landon pulled a bag of Pumpkins seeds from the inside of his robes and gave each of his students a seed for their own use. "Be sure your soil is tilled, or rather soft. I have tilled the soil already so that shouldn't really be a problem. Your pumpkins are to be in the ground and ready to grow by the end of today's lesson."

Landon flicked out his wand, "Watch what I do. You will be doing this in regular labour." A smile formed on his face. His spade hovered in the air. "Get down on your knees, since it's easier to reach the dirt. Take your spade and dig a small hole in the ground and drop the seed into the hole." His spade did exactly that, and Landon dropped the seed into the hole. "Refill the hole and then pat the soil lightly and don't compact it." Landon's spade gently patted the ground like he instructed. "Now, give it a generous amount of water." His watering can poured water over the dirt. "And now do exactly as I did."

After everyone was finished, Landon smiled. As much as he wanted to teach them the muggle way of planting, he knew that they couldn't wait too long until harvest, so he took out his wand once again and spoke to his students. "Now, in order for the pumpkins to grow a bit faster, a spell will need to be involved. Please take out your wands and repeat after me." Landon waited until all of his students had retrieved their wands and stated clearly, "Sementis medicates." He then waved his wand in a loop over his planted pumpkin seed. The sprout emerged from the ground, thickened into a vine, twining and extending its vine, waiting for the others to grow. A small bud flowered, then bloomed yellow before the petals fell away and a small, light coloured melon was clinging to the vine. "Great job guys!" the man exclaimed when he looked around to see that everyone had successfully practiced the spell. "Once you are all packed up, you may leave. Have a good week!"

Assignment: RP the lesson. First poster please answer the question. For extra credit you may write a paragraph about the pumpkin.

Freddie headed for his usual table at the back - the one he seemed to be getting away with standing at, rather than sitting. Herbology was a welcome change after three hours of sitting around. Hesitantly, he raised his hand. "Pumpkins," he said. Wow - that was the right answer? Three house points? He earned three house points? Cool. Professor Carter was pretty cool, actually.

Flipping to the next blank page in his notebook, Freddie copied down the facts on the blackboard. He was so focused on writing neatly that he wasn't paying much attention to what he was actually writing, but he told himself, sceptically, that he would read them over later. Then he headed outside, where Professor Carter had tilled several rectangular patches of soil. Man - why couldn't they be higher up? Freddie's leg twinged as he knelt in front of the dirt. It had been bothering him a bit all morning, giving him pins and needles, and leaning forward on his knees was making it worse. What would he do if it went all weak here? He'd have to limp all the way back into the greenhouse to get his stuff. He couldn't hide that.

He put up with it for as long as he could, patting the soil down over his pumpkin seed, then threw down his trowel for a moment and lay back on the grass. It was sunny, at least - it just looked like he was sunbathing. It also looked like he was goofing off, and he prayed Professor Carter wouldn't say anything. It helped a bit. Everyone else was already getting their wands out by the time Freddie sat back up and finished patting and watering his soil. He was one of the last to try the spell, which meant he had the least time to practice, and by the end of the lesson he'd only managed to produce a tiny sprout. Whatever - he could practice this later. He just really wanted to go.

Marina headed into the greenhouses and yawned, honestly her sleepless nights were getting ridiculous, but she didn’t think there was much she could do about them since it was one of those things she just had to deal with. Still, Herbology wasn’t bad, at least she could sort of understand it a little. She followed everyone into their areas, and then looked up when they were told they would be dealing with pumpkins. Ah, that made sense, what with Halloween coming up. She’d almost forgotten. She hadn’t celebrated it since they moved from Puerto Rico. She took the notes she thought she needed - pumpkins were okay, she thought, but they weren’t what she thought she would be doing in this class if she was honest. She wouldn’t mind trying to weave pumpkin strips into mats honestly, because that kind of sounded cool. The lesson ended not long after they made their pumpkins grow, and she headed out.

Juniper really liked Herbology. It was a peaceful moment between all the chaos of her other classes. She got a moment to do what she loved, care for the plants. As she settled in the classroom near the Ravenclaw who'd helped her out with that older student she gave him a hesitant smile before focusing on the Professor. She let out a small giggle at the mention of pumpkin, realizing it seemed like she was laughing at the answer. "Sorry, I have a cat named Pumpkin." She explained hurriedly, not wanting anyone to think she had laughed at anyone in the classroom. No it was just funny they were talking about the very thing she'd named her cat after.

Juniper began working on the soil, making sure it was prepped and ready to plant her pumpkin. Her eyes every now and then flicking to the other students around her, more specifically Freddie who took a second to lay on the ground. Juniper didn't know if she should ask if he was okay or not, eventually deciding against it. Watering the plant the Hufflepuff waited a little bit for more instructions. Taking out her wand she nervously cast the spell, "Sementis medicates." Watching the plant actually start growing as a result had Juniper feeling all sorts of wonder. Spells were fun and all but helping something grow with magic was a different type of exciting and beautiful. As Juniper repeated the spell a few times and noticed Freddie struggle with his a little. The brunette waited long enough for him to leave before turning to his pumpkin and quietly repeating the spell. "Sementis medicates." Juniper figured that the Ravenclaw had helped her out with that older boy so she might return the favour, even if just in the form of a small spell to boost his pumpkins growth.

Amias walked into the herbology greenhouse and took his usual spot in the room. He wasn’t sure what they would be covering but the moment someone else answer the question it made perfect sense. Amias looked at the notes on the board and then copied those down, making sure that he did it quickly before most others. He waited till everyone else was done and then they were brought outside. He took a spot and made sure the ground was ready and mimicked what the professor did in planting the pumpkin seed. He took his wand after and then like the professor had done, he waved it over the ground and said. ”Sementis medicates,” he was able to do it and watched a vine appear from the ground. With that the lesson was brought to an end and Amias packed up his things and left the room.

Time was flying by too fast, Priyanka felt like it was all too fast, she wanted to slow it down a little for a while. She couldn't believe that it was already the third Herbology lesson, which Priya went to with excitement, because she was interested in what Professor Carter would tell her in today's lesson this time. Having settled in the first benches in the classroom, she took out her notes from her bag to write down everything that was so new that she had learned in this lesson.

It didn't take long for Professor Carter to start the lesson. She was a little surprised that today's lesson was about pumpkins. Priyanka knew how difficult it was to grow pumpkins and that it wasn't her favorite vegetable by any means, but she wrote down everything that the professor told her and what she would have to do in this lesson.

Piyanka did everything she had to do, took a shovel and dug a hole, then put pumpkin seeds in it, covered them with soil and then lightly patted the soil with her palm, and compacted it, then watered it thoroughly. She did as the professor showed and told her. It would just take a long time for it to grow, the professor showed them a spell that would make it grow faster, Priya took the wand, then said in a confident and confident voice, "Sementis medicates." When it was done, she looked at the professor, hoping that she had done everything correctly, but when they were free, the girl put the notes in her bag, then said goodbye to the professor and left the classroom, wondering what awaited them next week.
