First Years, Lesson One

“Good morning, everyone,” Gabrielle greeted as the first years finally settled into their seats after a couple of minutes of rabble at the start of the lesson. She looked around the room, taking in the faces of the students. Gabrielle was determined to keep a sharp eye out, try and ensure that any bullying or misbehaving got nipped in the bud early. The students needed to have ground rules set and behave appropriately, after all. “Welcome to History of Magic. I'm Professor Moncrieffe, I was born in Bermuda, and I’ll be your teacher until fifth year. So, I’m going to go through the roll. When I call your name, if you could please just raise your hand, tell me if you have something you’d prefer me to call you, like a nickname or if you go by your middle name or something like that, and tell me where you’re from." She paused for a second. "Yes, I know you all hate these exercises, I do too, but it’ll help me put faces to names.”

She went through the list, making a couple of notes as she went before finally reaching the end. “Thank heavens that won’t take nearly as long next time. Alright, so this year we’ll go over some beginner topics - Merlin, witch trials, and so on. For some of you, this will all be completely new, for others, don’t discount it, you may actually still learn something if you bother to listen.” She gave a wry smirk, knowing some students from wizarding families would probably think they knew everything already. “Sure, we may not be doing any spells, but you won’t be doing yourself any favours if you tune out just because of that. If you come into any of your classes expecting to be bored from the outset, you're setting yourself up for failure. Besides, there’s more to magic than just wand waving and incantations, or huddling over cauldrons. You may find that understanding where we come from and knowing more about the world around you is far more useful than being able to turn a beetle into a button, just quietly.”

"But for now, since we've got a bit of time left...why don't you take the opportunity to chat amongst yourselves for a bit? Talk to people not in your house, make friends. You know, socialize and what not."
With that, she left the students to it, wandering around the classroom to keep an eye on things and talk to any students who had any questions or asking them a little more about themselves, before they were eventually dismissed.

Juniper had gotten a little lost on her way to the History of Magic lesson, the castle was so big and overwhelming still how was one supposed to just simply find their way around during the first week? She walked into the classroom hoping she wasn't too late, taking a seat she placed her jar of sand on the desk still not willing to leave the comforting item in her dorm for the day. The Hufflepuff grimaced when their Professor mentioned some sort of a introduction game thing. It meant she'd have to speak, and everyone's attention would be on her.

When her name was called Juniper looked around helplessly, looking for anyone who could save her but there was nobody so instead she stood up and scooped her jar up and hugged it. "I- Um... My name is Juniper uh but you can just call me Juni?" She offered quietly her eyes shifting from one place to another refusing to look at anyone in particular. "I'm from Norfolk Island." She added quickly after and sat back down lowering her head again. The rest went in a whim and Juniper was more than glad to run out the classroom once it was done.

Gaia had spent enough time around her sisters gushing about History of Magic to already know what the lessons would include, or at least some of it. The subject was interesting but Nia had mentioned that there would be a lot of lecturing and listening, well maybe she could sketch her time away then? As she walked into the classroom she glanced at the Professor whom her sister had seemed to absolutely love, she didn't look like anything too special. Gaia went and took a seat towards the back, instantly pulling out her sketchbook and pencil and getting to work.

Most of the lesson went way over her head and it wasn't until she heard her name that the Slytherin raised her head. "Sorry? What was the question?" She asked from no one in particular. Someone quipped that she was supposed to tell her name and where she was from. "Right I am Gaia Athanasiou, I trust you still remember my sister she is quite hard to forget" She said her tone far too uninterested. "You can just call me Gaia, I am originally from Greece." She added before turning her attention back to her drawing.

History of Magic had been a subject that Eloise had been interested in. She liked the idea of History, and she also liked the idea of learning history. The new Hufflepuff quickly packed up the stuff she needed before heading down to her History of Magic class. Once she arrived at the classroom, she took a seat near the front of the room. She then took out the things she needed before placing them on the desk in front of her.

It wasn't long before the professor started off with the lesson, and Eloise moved her attention towards the professor. It seemed that this was just an introduction lesson, which Eloise didn't seem to mind. She listened to her classmates introduce themselves, keeping mental notes on who was who. She didn't want to forget any of their names. It wasn't long before her name was then called and she had raised her hand. "Hi! My name is Eloise, I don't really have any nicknames," Eloise says as she introduces herself with a wave and a smile. Her name was already pretty short for a nickname. Though she wasn't going to admit that she did have a small nickname, but that was reserved for her family and really close friends. "And I'm from Christchurch" Eloise concludes with a small smile.

It wasn't long before the lesson had come to an end, and they were dismissed. Eloise quickly packed up her things and said a quick yet appreciative thanks and goodbye to the professor before heading out the door with her friends and the rest of her classmates.

Lessons were both thrilling and terrifying to Arachne. Thrilling because she had always wanted to learn more magic and learn more about the magical world, but terrifying because she had no idea what to expect. And in most of her classes, she would be without Nessie. Thankfully, History of Magic was a class they had together with the Slytherins. So Arachne stayed close to her twin sister and took a seat next to her. She was worried about Nessie. It seemed like moving houses really wasn't an option, but she also knew her sister wouldn't give up easily.

The class started and the professor introduced herself as Professor Moncrieffe, she then said a bit about herself. Arachne paled a little when it was said they had to introduce themselves. She didn't want to do that. But when her name was called, she timidly raised her hand. "Arachne. New Zealand." She said quietly, her hand moving down quickly again when her turn was over. Maybe she should've been more specific, but she had panicked a little. When everyone had said something, the professor went on to talk about which subjects they'd learn about this semester. It sounded fairly interesting to Arachne, though she did wish they'd learn a spell or two. This probably wasn't the right subject for that. They had some time to talk, and Arachne turned to Nessie. Her roommates were here and Arachne wouldn't have minded chatting to them, but she knew Nessie wouldn't accept that. When the lesson was over, the twins left together.

Ruby had always enjoyed history and learning what had happened before her, that when she saw History of Magic on her timetable, she was quite excited by this. Of course this was lesson one and introductions had to come first. When it was her turn she raised her hand and said, "Ruby, I'm from Auckland." Some people were going on a bit with their introduction but Ruby didn't feel it was necessary to give Professor Moncrieffe her life story when it hadn't been invited. The woman just wanted names and locations. She didn't speak for the rest of the lesson but did take a few notes then at the end of the lesson she packed up and left the classroom.

The classes this week were fairly simple, she thought, and she honestly wasn’t surprised since this was their first week at school. She didn’t really like introductory lessons though because it meant she was introducing herself to the same class of people constantly - at least she would remember everyone’s name by the end of it, probably, assuming she bothered to pay attention. She sat up a little straighter when the Professor mentioned they it was her turn and she didn’t bother standing up since she didn’t see the need, instead electing to stay seated. “I’m Annika Nightray, I’m from England - you can call me Nik.” Surely her accent would have given that part away already though, since she certainly didn’t sound like she was from around here, New Zealand or Australia. She certainly wasn’t a student of history, but she wasn’t really acred of books or anything, so she was happy to sort of takes notes in the margins as the class continued, until it ended and she was able to leave.

James was quite restless so the idea of sitting and listening to a lecture on history didn’t appeal to him at all. He settled into his seat in the classroom and listened to Professor Moncrieffe introduce herself and groaned audibly when they were told they would have to introduce themselves, it was annoying and he had already met some of the people in his class, the rest he would meet later, probably. When it was his turn he raised his hand and said as little as possible. “James Cosgrove from New Zealand,” He listened to the other students introduce themselves and once the lesson was over he packed up his things and made his way out of the classroom.

Aiya was finally at Hogwarts now and she was glad that she could now experience everything that her family spoke about. It wasn’t the same school as either of her parents went to, but it was the same one as her cousins were going to and the same one where her aunt had been. Aunt Gwen always had so much to say about it, and Aiya really hoped that it was going to live up to its hype as she packed everything she needed into her backpack and headed to classes for that day.

Aiya entered the History of Magic classroom with very low expectations about the class. She knew that not too much would be happening in the class and already felt it a waste of time as she entered the room and took a seat near the back of the classroom. The professor started the lesson by introducing herself and she then asked everyone else to do the same. It took some time for the question to eventually come by her and Aiya stood up, smiling slightly towards the professor. "My name is Aiya, I am half Japanese and half English." she said simply before sitting back down. What did it even matter where they came from anyway? Aiya barely even knew. As the lesson came to an end, Aiya was quick to head out.

January was a little unsure of what to expect from lessons since she had only ever been homeschooled by her mother. But she did her best to be prepared and arrive on time. She took her seat with several minutes to spare and watched as the rest of her classmates trickled in. She smiled at the professor as she began the lesson. But they didn't get far before it was her turn to speak. "Hello, my name is January. I don't really have any nicknames." she explained. Even if her name was a bit long, no nickname ever stuck. "Um, and I was born in Ireland but my mom was born here." she started to explain before feeling like she had been speaking for much longer than everyone else. "So we're here now. Or well I'm here." she stammered before sitting down quickly. Her face was hot so she was relieved to have some notes to take as a distraction until the were left to do what they wanted before they were dismissed.

Amias walked into the history of magic classroom, and watched as others took seats within the room. He eventually picked a spot in the class and then the professor got started. The woman introduced herself and then asked them to do the same. He took the time to think of what he was going to say until it got to him. ”Amias, Ami if you’d like, and I was born in Russia but I’ve lived in New Zealand most of my life,” he said, not sure if that was enough information before he just sat down, letting his cheeks now redden as he got over the speaking in front of everyone. The lesson was then moved on to what they’d be covering within the semester. He took a couple of notes and then they were allowed to just talk amongst themselves. He glanced about but didn’t really know anyone so wasn’t able to start any conversations.
