Seventh Years: Lesson Three

Angel was considering today’s plant from a safe distance as the class began arriving, having posted himself casually against one of the greenhouse benches where he could easily see all of the plant’s appendages. He’d been assured repeatedly over the years that the school’s resident Venomous Tentacula, Hemneda, was tamed and harmless, but Angel still wasn’t too keen to get closer to the plant than necessary.

Afternoon, all!” He greeted the class as they were settled, tearing his eyes away from Hamneda to address them. “Today, we’ll be looking at the Venomous Tentacula, a specimen of which we’ve been provided here,” he said, motioning to the plant in question. “Now rest assured that Hamneda here is quite harmless, but you should know of course wild venomous tentacula are quite dangerous.

Venomous Tentacula are predatory plants, using their spikes and mobile vines to grab live prey,” he said, outlining Hamneda’s spines in the air with his wand, moving his hand back when the plant lifted a vine lazily. “The spikes are venomous, hence the name, as is the ‘bite’ from one. The tentacula expels venom from their vines as they reach for prey before attempting to strangle them. They’ll even go after humans, they’re not picky,” he said with a slight nervous laugh as Hamneda shifted again.

Now, any thoughts on how you might defend yourself from such a plant? They’re sometimes used as a defensive measure,” Angel nodded to a student as they raised their hand, considering their answer. “Yep, a severing charm would work perfectly, stun the plant and then severs the tentacles neatly,” he said, making a slicing motion with his hand as he spoke. “Very good. 3 house points for quick thinking.

Checking his pocket watch, Angel was relieved to see that it was time to wrap things up. “That’s all for today, make sure you have some notes down, I have it on good authority this’ll be on the NEWT,” he finished up, shooing the class out so he could hurry up and move Hamneda somewhere further away from his office as soon as possible.

Seventh year was all about dealing with dangerous things, dangerous spells, dangerous creatures, and apparently, dangerous plants, if the venomous tentacular he was currently staring at was any indication. He was fascinated by it, as anyone who liked Herbology would have been, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t at least summarily aware of the risk they posed and the danger they were in, even with the professor present. When Castillo asked about defense against the plant, Elio’s hand shot up from where he was standing in the corner. “A Severing Charm should do the trick - stun first, then slice,” he said, confidently, watching the professor confirm what he said. He liked it when he got housepoints because they could really do with more. He wasn’t sure how Slytherin was in the lead. Surely they were cheating. “You could also try fire if you were desperate, but I wouldn’t recommend setting a greenhouse on fire just to escape a plant,” he added, grinning, because that probably woudln’t go over well and a controlled incendio could be difficult to manage sometimes, especially if you are desperate enough with a plant to risk using it. As the lesson wrapped up, he quickly headed out of the greenhouse, wondering just how many students might have been eaten, or even attacked by the tentacular over the years.

Savannah walked into the herbology greenhouse and took her usual spot in the room. She glanced towards the professor as the man got started and looked towards the plant that the professor was motioning to. Her eyebrow raised slightly, given that she knew how dangerous these plants were but that this one was fine. She took her quill and wrote down a few things from what the professor was saying before the professor then asked a question. Savannah felt sure that she knew the answer to it but didn’t raise her hand for it, instead just listened as someone else answered it. The professor then wrapped up the lesson, and she headed out of the greenhouse.

Valentine’s celebrations had happened and Ruto was quite happy with herself after participating in them. She didn’t have a date or a significant other, however was beginning to appreciate the importance of love, and helping deliver the roses was actually quite fun. It gave her an excuse to be prancing about outside, and definitely gave her something to keep her mind off the fact that she didn’t have anyone to share the day with. It was time for classes now however, and so Roo packed her belongings in her backpack and headed to them.

Roo made her way to her Herbology class, taking a seat near the front of the room as the professor started the lesson. He introduced them to a Venomous Tentacula in all its glory, and the Ravenclaw made sure to write down some notes about it as the professor spoke. He explained the best way to defend oneself against it, however Roo wouldn't dare try and disturb it if it was just trying to mind its own business. She hoped she would never have to make the decision as to ever harm a plant. The lesson soon came to an end and the teen packed her belongings away before heading out of the classroom.

The seventh year Prefect was a little resentful since Cassius Styx promised Gregory Friend that he would stick around the school until they graduated to help him, and he had the gall to leave. He could have spent the last year of his schooling over in Beauxbatons, but it was too late now to convince his parents to do that for him. Cass was stuck here for a while longer. Cass would still write to his girlfriend. That was all he could do until he graduated. Cass gathered his things in his bag and left the Slytherin house in a bit of a hurry. He was distracted, and wanted nothing more than to just get the day over with.

Cass entered the Greenhouse and found his spot. They were looking at the Venomous Tentacula, which looked like a Devil's Snare to him, but it also didn't. It was weird. They were told how the Venomous Tentacula grabbed their prey. They did not care whatever they strangled. Animal or human. Cass would not mind having one himself, but he was not someone with a green thumb. Maybe his grandfather would help him with it. And, soon enough, they were done for the day. He got up and left the greenhouse.,

The semester was dragging on and Leah wasn’t sure if that was a good thing or not. For now she was trying to look on the bright side and took her time walking to class, which just meant she had to rush to take her seat so she’d have her notebook out before Professor Castillo began the lesson. She took notes as he gave his lecture on the venomous tentacula and was glad her seat was a good distance away. She had no desire to test her luck, lest she be taken out by a plant. Finally the lesson was over and she packed up her things to leave.
