Fifth Year, Lesson Four

"Good morning fifth years," He greeted with the usual smile at his students. Like all the previous classes this term in front of them sat a test. He hoped that they had all studied. Because this would be more difficult than the last one. They were stepping it up, slightly. "Now class, in front you sits another quiz, this is a closed book test, so I don't want to see any books open. Get started," He took a sip of his tea as the class got started on the test.

1. What charm causes things to swell/become larger?
2. What does Incendio do?
3. What does Locomotor do?

"Right, today, fifth years we will be learning the Reductor Curse." He paused, stepping to the board, and writing upon it the word, Reducto, he looked back to the class, "Reducto, as it is incanted, causes the caster to blasts objects out of their path. You may find this to be quite useful if there is something in your way. When in a cluttered room and trying not to trip, Reducto would be the more convenient solution to moving everything by hand or with a summoning or locomotor charm, but can also be immensely destructive. Which makes it a lot more fun" Smiling to the class, Misha turned to the side of the room, and from their conjured a spare desk.

He stood back, and cast the Reducto spell at the desk with a very small flick of his wand. The desk was obliterated in its place, the pieces of wood splintering and crumbling into a pile of dust. Using Scourgify the Professor cleaned up the mess, facing his students once more. That was the best way of showing the spell. "This spell can be a little dangerous, so we will be heading outside to practice so that no one gets hurt." With that he ushered the class out, and down to the lawn outside. Taking them to a row of hedges that he had created for exactly this purpose. "Reducto might take you a while to get right, but, I know all of you are capable, so just practice. Once you feel confident in the spell, you may leave." Misha helped the odd student, but was mostly there to be sure no one got hurt.

Quiz is once again, just extra credit!

Charms was sometimes one of those hard to figure out classes, because Aura had days where she loved it and then there were the days where she would have muvh rather do literally anything else. She nodded politely to Professor Haden and then quickly took her seat near the middle of the class. She looked down at the quiz, frowning as she looked over it. The problem with quizzes sometimes was that they might look easy enough but sometimes they had some secret part of it that she was just supposed to know.Aura was the kind of person who liked to take things at face value though so that wasn’t a very comfortable ideal for her. When finished, she moved the quiz to the side to take some notes on the rest of the mateiral in class. The spell seemed like it would be handy, and as the desk crumbled, she raised an eyebrow at all the possibilities. It was a good spell, she thought, simple, creative, potentially deadly. This was where they got into the more harmful spells apparently.

She listened and paid attention because she wasn’t about to blow her own face off learning a spell that would be helpful later, probably, especially in the area she was considering working, she wouldn’t want to cause and problems there after all and she couldn’t imagine they’d be happy if she accidentally blew something up. Well she couldn’t imagine Professor Haden would have been that pleased either come to think of it. “Reducto”, she watched as the spell did nothing, missing it’s target completely. Ah, leassons. She adjusted her stance a little, rolled her shoulder and tried again. “Reducto!”, and this time a stasifying blast sent leaves scattering in all directions. She grinned. “Done.”

Callie walked into the charms classroom and took her usual spot in the room. Her gaze moved to the man at the front of the class she took the quiz and began to fill in the answers to it. She didn’t take long with it, both knowing the answers and the fact it was a pretty short quiz, then the professor was moving on. They went to a second room and the professor showed them the spell before letting them get to it. She took her wand and tried the spell, it took her a while to get it but she did eventually, certainly not strongly but did manage it. Eventually the professor wrapped things up and dismissed them.

Enoch walked into the charms classroom. He took the quiz and filled it out quickly. It wasn’t hard or difficult. He then was able to just sit back and wait for the professor to continue the lesson. When he did they were taken out of the classroom and then shown the spell. Enoch then took his wand and when they were allowed to be able to do the spell. He got the spell very quickly, and was confident as he just continued to practice the spell, until the professor wrapped up the lesson and then packed up and left the room.

Charms was easily one of Teddy's favourite subjects, if not his favourite at school. He loved learning new charms each week and practicing them. He loved it most when he had daily uses for some of the spells he was learning. Reducto was one he had experience of on the dueling platform against Dante but he wasn’t sure he had much of a daily use for it. After completing the quiz questions, Teddy followed Professor Haden outside and got to work practicing himself. He pointed his wand at the hedge and cast, “Reducto!” The hedge exploded into bits. “Oof,” he muttered, impressed with the spell and also relieved that Dante's spell had not hit him on the platform. It was so much fun practicing though, he continued to practice until the end of the lesson then made his way back up to the castle.

1. What charm causes things to swell/become larger? Engorgio
2. What does Incendio do? Produces fire
3. What does Locomotor do? Moves the object targeted

Lucy entered, settling down in her chair. Another quiz, but she quickly filled it in and the lesson moved on to the spell of the week. It was a bit of a dramatic spell, Lucy thought, but she could have fun with it for sure. One to be careful with, but Lucy liked a little bit of controlled destruction. They moved outside, and she tried out the spell. It didn't quite work the first time, probably because Lucy was holding back, but successive tries saw her accomplish the spell. Soon after the lesson ended, and Lucy left.

1. What charm causes things to swell/become larger? Engorgio
2. What does Incendio do? Makes fire come out of the caster's wand
3. What does Locomotor do? Makes the target object move

Dominic was glad that he was halfway through the semester. It meant that he was halfway through half of his classes, and that was some good progress. Even though his work was piling up, it meant he was halfway with finishing it all, and he couldn’t wait until he could finally enjoy the break. He entered the charms classroom and was quick to fill out the quiz that unsurprisingly sat upon his desk. Once everyone was done with the quiz, the professor began explaining and demonstrating the new spell they would learn. He watched with wide eyes as a desk exploded right in front of them. Luckily, the class would be learning this spell outside. He followed his classmates to the lawn where the professor had set up some bushes for them to practice on. Dominic figured this would be a great activity to try and alleviate some stress he was feeling. He took out his wand and imagined the hedge in front of him exploding before saying the incantation. It didn't take long before he was able to get the hang of it, and he continued practicing the spell until the end of the lesson.

Marley walked into her charms classroom and took a seat in her usual spot. She took out the things she needed for the lesson and placed them on the desk in front of her. Marley was enjoying charms so far. She liked the spells that they were learning so far, and she was always keen to learn new things. The Hufflepuff moved her attention towards the professor as the professor started off with the lesson, and she was pleased with the fact that they were doing another quiz. She found them quite fun, and it had helped her have a refresher on the spells. Marley answered the questions as quickly as she could, but also answered them to the best of her ability.

After doing the quiz, they then moved onto the next part of the lesson, which was learning a new charm. Marley listened closely to what the professor had to say, making sure to take notes of what he was saying as she didn't want to miss out on anything important. She nodded her head from time to time throughout the lesson to show that she was understanding what was being said. Marley watched as the professor demonstrated the charm. Her jaw dropped in shock as she watched the desk be obliterated into pieces, and she looked around at her classmates to see if they too saw what she saw. It wasn't long before they were moved outside and were practising the charm themselves. Marley had managed to get the spell and was quite pleased with herself.

It wasn't long before the lesson had come to an end and they were dismissed. Marley headed back to the classroom to pack up her things and area. She then says a quick thanks and goodbye to the professor before heading out of the door with the rest of her friends and classmates, pleased with the progress she was making.

As Millie walked into the Charms classroom she noticed there was once again a quiz on her desk. She picked it up and looked it over, nodding and filling it out quickly before she paid attention to whatever new spell they would be learning this week. She got to work, making sure to keep her books out of sight just in case they got caught in the crossfire of the new spell. It was a bit of a rough one obviously. She watched the demonstration and then went over it with her wand, copying the professors movements. “Reducto,” she jumped a little at the small explosion from her wand and then laughed slightly. She continued to practice until the end of class.

Charms began with a quiz as was becoming custom in a lot of her subjects as they got closer to the end of the semester and actually sitting their O.W.Ls. She quickly filled in the quiz, a little annoyed they couldn’t check their books but she managed to get it done. Once the quiz was done they moved onto the spell they would be learn, reducto. After explaining what the charm did they moved outside to practice. Veronica practiced the curse on the hedges that had been lined up by Professor Haden. Once she felt like she knew what she was doing she let the professor know and headed back to the castle.

1. What charm causes things to swell/become larger? Engorgio

2. What does Incendio do? Makes fire

3. What does Locomotor do? moves things

Audrey was struggling, but that wasn't something she'd ever admit. The dark circles under her eyes probably didn't help the appearance of having it together, but Audrey was tough. She'd faced plenty of disappointments lately, and she had no intention of letting them stop her. Not even her lucid dreaming attempts for Divination being far closer to nightmares.

1. Engorgio
2. Sets things on fire
3. Makes things move

At least today's spell was good for burning off stress. It didn't actually take Audrey very long to get the spell right, because she was able to channel said stress into blowing up a hedge. She wanted to blow up some more stuff, but didn't really get the opportunities. So she instead headed out to the Quidditch pitch when she was done to hit things with a bat, satisfied she had the hang of the reducto spell.
