Seventh Years: Lesson Five

"Got something a little different for you all today as a treat for surviving your snargaluffs last week," Angel said encouragingly as his Seventh years began arriving, motioning the last stragglers inside the greenhouse. In previous years, Angel had set up the class with a quiz this week, but quizzes meant grading and Angel hated grading, so he'd decided to scrap that idea for something much better now.

"What we have here is an Alihotsy, you may have encountered its leaves in Potions already," Angel said, waving a hand to the small tree he'd set up in front of the class. It had rather distinctive mottled red and green leaves, which Angel pointed to with his wand as he spoke. "Also known as the Hyena plant, anyone know what these leaves can do when ingested?" Angel pointed at one of the students, always pleased when they answered things so he didn't have to explain. "That's right, they induce hysteria and uncontrollable laughter, hence the nickname. You'll often find them in Laughing Potions."

Stepping away from the tree to let the students investigate, Angel retrieved his other, more hands on item for today's class, happily dropping it on the bench in front of them. "Alihotsy's also pretty common in confectionery, diluted of course, since the cheering effect is rather pleasant," he said, relieving the collection of fudge and flavored chocolates he'd picked up from Honeyduke's last time he was in Brightstone. "Glumbumble treacle is also an excellent antidote to Alihotsy leaves, so I've picked up some of that for you all to try too. For science of course, you understand." Angel smiled, motioning his students to grab some of the chocolates and fudge on the table. "That's all I've got today, help yourself and relax a bit while you still can," he said before grabbing some of the fudge himself and taking a seat as the lesson wrapped up.

RP the lesson and sample some fudge if you're so inclined. First poster can answer the question for some extra points.

They didn’t often get treats in Herbology, but honestly he wasn’t entirely sure he trusted Castillo’s assessment of what a treat was. The fact the year was coming to an end was bad enough, especially since Elio would have no more of Castillo’s classes to look forward to, but it was going to happen eventually, he had two years with the man. He was more interested in what might be a treat that what they might be working on this lesson. Still, he sort of half-listened as Castillo introduced the Alihotsy, and he recognised the leaves from potions - well, way back when, he hadn’t worked with a lot of Alihotsy recently. Potions wasn’t his best subject. He thrrew his hand up in the air when asked about the leaves, “Alihotsy can induce hysteria and uncontrollable laughter when you eat them, that’s why they get used in the Laughing potions.” He was slightly down though when he realised that the treat was his mum’s fudge. Well, he knew this wasn’t vegan, but he knew she did have other options, so he resolved to write her a letter to give him the fudge. The lessson ended not long after and he headed out, saluting Castillo on his way out.

It was the fifth week of classes which meant two more weeks before exams. Roo was more than ready to take them. She just wanted everything to be over with and to finally graduate, and she hoped these next couple of weeks would go by quick enough. She entered the Herbology greenhouse and took her usual seat in the room, wondering what the professor had in store for them that lesson. She listened as the professor spoke about Alihotsy leaves, their contribution to potions, and what happened when one ingested one. Roo didn't have any interest in eating it. It probably didn't even want to be eaten. She was quick to exit the greenhouse at the end of the lesson once dismissed.

It was so close to the end of the term that Cassius Styx could hardly get himself out of bed to go to class, but he managed to get up, get dressed, ensure his hair looked good, got his perfect badge on, and left the dorm room. Cass had a quiet walk, with his thoughts racing. From one question to another. A part of him did not know what he wanted to do. He could not become a famous Quidditch player. He could not stand flying. He could fight, so maybe he could open a gym. That sounded nice. He dismissed this thought as he made it to the classroom door.

Cass entered the Greenhouse for another round of Herbology lessons, but he hoped that they would not have to get another pod. He would rather not. This time, they had the Alihotsy. He knew all about it in potions, and they had dealt with it before. However, he did not know how in the world they could ever be dangerous. They had the antidote for it too. He did not want to try either of them because he did not want to laugh hysterically. He was not really known to laugh like a hyena, and did not want to change that thought. He got up and left.

Leah had unintentionally started to count the days till graduation and the number was getting worryingly low. But before she could fall into a pit of despair about it she had to go to class. Thankfully there were no threatening plants in the front of the classroom and she settled into her seat. Of course she had heard of alihotsy leaves before but she hadn't really given them much thought as she took down some notes as the professor went on. She raised an eyebrow when they were offered fudge and she gladly took a piece. She wasn't one to turn down sweets when offered. She chewed tentatively in case the leaves added some unpleasant flavor but if there was a difference she didn't really noticed. The lesson dragged on for a bit and she found herself staring at her notes for an undetermined amount of time and realized she hadn't actually been listening to anything the professor had said in the past five minutes. She was about to ask the person next to her what was going on but then they were dismissed. Her body felt a bit heavy while her mind felt like it could float away on a cloud. She giggled to herself at the thought of just blowing away in the wind as she packed up her things to leave. As she walked out the door she remembered something about an antidote but she couldn't remember what it was for.
