Fifth Years, Lesson Two

"Good morning fifth years. I hope your week has been nice so far." He greeted with his usual cheery tone, "Most of you will have noticed, that on each table there is a quiz. A sort of revision quiz, and you'll get one each week. So, that's why you need to be prepared." He knew that the quiz was fairly simple. It held nothing new, and was mostly stuff that they would've, or at least should've done in first year. "Now, begin!"
  • What does Wingardium Leviosa do?
  • What is the pronunciation for the summoning charm?
  • What is the pronunciation for the weaker form of the Banishing Charm?
  • What does Lumos do?
  • What is the incantation for the disarming spell?

"Now, that's over with, on to the fun stuff. Today we will be learning, or revising the Impediment Jinx. If you take Care of Magical Creatures you'll already know what it is, but for those who don't," Misha paused, looking over his class to be sure they were still paying attention, before he continued, "The Impediment Jinx or Curse stops an object or slows it down for a period of time, depending on the strength of the object or being. Now, today, class, we are going to be venturing outside, so be thankful that Charms for you guys, is in the second semester."

With a beckoning of his hand Misha led his students out of the classroom and into the gardens, spying a rather ugly little creature. Waving his wand towards it, he stated, "You see that? That's a gnome. They're rather pesky little creatures and in a tight spot can be quite a hindrance." His dark eyes fell on one that began to run toward him, as he had produced a handful of Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans. "They're suckers for these beans; I want you to use Impedimenta on them before they can get to you." He pointed out the gnomes gnashing teeth as it still scurried towards him, and with a wave of his wand he stated, "Impedimenta!" A flash of red light barrelled into the gnomes chest, seeming to put it in slow motion.

Misha produced a box of the beans and handed each of his students a few, continuing, "Now, when you have successfully completed this spell on a gnome you may leave to enjoy your day; remember to be careful around your fellow students and that gnomes will bite. Nothing fatal, of course, but rather painful."

Misha stood in the gardens as the students dispersed through them, looking around to help them when needed and on the watch for any mischievous gnomes. While happily munching on spare bertie botts. Eventually once he felt the class was sufficiently good at the charm, he dismissed them.

RP the lesson (attendance post is fine). Do the quiz for extra credit.

Callie walked into the charms classroom and took her usual spot in the room. She looked up at the professor as the man got started, giving them first a quiz. She took the quiz and it didn’t take her too long to have answers for each of the sections. She filled it out and then handed it in, feeling pretty pleased with her memory on it. The professor then, once all had finished, took them outside where they were able to practice a spell. She listened to the instruction but felt bad as she had to cast the spell. She didn’t do very well at it but did certainly try. Eventually the professor wrapped up the lesson and dismissed them.

Enoch headed into the charms classroom and took his usual spot in the room. His gaze moved towards the professor at the front of the room as the man got started. He took the quiz and filled it out lazily, taking his time though he didn’t really need to. He handed it in when he was supposed to and then the professor took them outside. He followed and then listened to the spell the professor was having them do. Enoch didn’t mind casting it at all. He was quick and keen to do so, mastering the spell with relative ease until the professor dismissed them.

Friday walked into the charms classroom and took a seat in the room. She took the quiz and half filled it out. She didn’t much care about actually getting it right, or actually managing to make sure she didn’t answer everything wrong, it wasn’t that serious really. She then went outside with the rest of the class, and watched the professor demonstrate the spell. She was glad they were then able to and she made quick work of it. Friday did this until the professor wrapped things up and dismissed them.

Lucy entered the classroom, taking a seat. They started with a quiz, which Lucy initially wasn't happy about, but then she realised it was actually quite simple.

  • What does Wingardium Leviosa do? It levitates an object
  • What is the pronunciation for the summoning charm? Accio
  • What is the pronunciation for the weaker form of the Banishing Charm? Depulso
  • What does Lumos do? Provides light at the tip of the wand
  • What is the incantation for the disarming spell? Expelliarmus

Lucy hadn't taken care of magical creatures so she didn't know the spell but was excited to learn. Going outside with the rest of the class, she practiced the spell. She found it quite straightforward, in all honesty. No gnome bites either, for which she was glad. The lesson wrapped up, Lucy went on her way.

Aura wasn’t sure how she felt about a bit of a mini quiz, they were just sort of… well she didn’t think they were smart, she hated them. Quizzes were the kind of things that she just didn’t like to do if she could avoid them. She sighed as she filled it out before heading out into the garden with the rest of the class, the beans between her fingers as she eyed the scurrying gnomes. The quiz had at least been easy, basic sort of stuff, and she was glad she’d paid enough attention in class. The real challenge would be this new spell, and so she adjusted her grip on her wand as she looked at one particularly aggressive gnome made a beeline for her. She was kind of appalled actually that they were using spells on a gnome, she supposed it wasn’t too bad since all it would do was slow it down, but like all creatures they deserved understanding a care. Not to be used in a lesson like this, especially one that wasn’t even about them specifically. “Impedimenta!” She quickly stopped the gnome that seemed hellbent on biting her legs, stepping back and out of harms way, satisfied that she had successfully stopped it. She made a few notes in her study guide as the class came to an end and headed out.

Teddy enjoyed Charms on account of how useful the subject was. He got started completing the quiz which was easy, he didn't struggle with any of the questions. They then moved onto the fun bit practicing Impedimenta. He followed the professor outside to the gardens where they spotted a gnome. Teddy thought it was curious that in the almost five years he'd been at Hogwarts, he'd been to the gardens many times with food, and never once seen a gnome, yet today they were practically fighting them off. He took the Bertie botts beans and ate a couple, then held some out to entice a gnome. When one came at him, he cast "Impedimenta!" And watched as the spell hit the gnome and it went into slow motion. Teddy laughed, it was a fun spell. Once dismissed, he headed back to the castle feeling good about how the lesson had gone.
