The air outside was cold, even with the sun shining. But Odette was happy to be out of the castle. She was walking across the lawn with her broom over her shoulder, though she wasn't heading in the direction of the Quidditch pitch. That had been her original destination, but halfway there she realized she didn't mind the walk and wanted to extend it. It had been a while since Odette had allowed herself to be alone with her thoughts, as since her mother's death she had tried to constantly distract herself. Up in the air it was hard to think of anything but flying, so she had been practicing a lot. When she was inside she was either reading, planning Quidditch strategies or distracting herself by talking to Margo. This was the first time in a long time where she had let things be quiet for a bit, and where she had let her mind wander.

Odette glanced up at the sky, surprised at the feeling of peace she had. She was still sad about her mother, that was not something she thought would go away easily. But there were more complicated feelings there too. She hadn't been a good mother to Odette, not always. Not always bad either, but it was definitely very complex. It felt almost like a betrayal to think this now that her mother was dead, but she knew it was the truth. Maria had been helping her work things out, and while she still sometimes felt guilty about her feelings, she knew they were valid. But living with Maria during the summer had been nice, in a way. At least she hadn't been with complete strangers. She still feared she would be shipped off somewhere, but those fears were in the background of her mind now. Other things were weighing on her mind too, like Margo and the weird moments between them. But on this sunny winter afternoon, she couldn't help a small smile from gracing her face. Today wasn't all bad, and maybe tomorrow wouldn't be either.
