It was already seven thirty in the evening and Kyle still had not got his hair right. Well there was not much to do as he was a guy but still he wanted it to be perfect just the way he pictured it. After spending two more minutes in front of his mirror he finally exited his dorm as he heard his friend complain that Kyle was taking more time than a girl. "Hey that's not true" he said with a protesting smile. His friends had planned everything from before and Kyle had just decided everything on the last minute. Today afternoon after the exams were over was when he finally got himself a date for the ball. He had not seen his friends Rose and Hayley in a while and since the second year did not want to go all by himself and watch the first year have decent dates he had asked one of his classmates, Sarah to accompany him to the dance. He had agreed to meet Sarah outside the hall fifteen minutes before eight and he was a few minutes early. That was always good as Kyle did not like to keep others waiting especially girls.

As Kyle waited for his date he looked at the other students who were waiting for someone outside the hall or others who were just going in. Everyone was dressed up and in the current fashion too. The students had finally got rid of their school robes and got into some fashionable dressed robes. The girls had put on make up and wore heels and looked very pretty indeed. The Professors too looked great. Kyle could spot Professor Snow and Professor Fey standing by the entrance and they looked stunning. Kyle himself had tried to look his best and this year he was wearing a white shirt instead of the black shirt which he had chosen last year. Plus he was not in jeans but in trousers and he had suited up with a nice black tie. He hoped he would look okay in front of whatever Sarah had on. He did not know the girl very well but they had many common classes and she seemed decent enough. Maybe she would turn out to be nice and they would become friends from today onwards. Kyle was looking forward to the beginning of holidays tomorrow and getting to see his mother and receiving Christmas gifts but today he wanted to enjoy and relax with his friends and celebrate the end of the term and exams. He could hear the music coming from the Great Hall and it was loud and very catchy. He grinned at some familiar faces as he waited some more for Sarah.

Sarah sat in front of the mirror in the Hufflepuff's Girls dorm as one of her friends curled her hair with her wand. One of her friends asked if she expected anything to happen with Kyle after the dance, but she smiled and shook her head slightly. 'He seems nice enough,' she murmured, turning her head left and right, to make sure that every curl was done evenly and there were no strands of hair that weren't curled. 'But I don't know him well enough. Hopefully we can become friends, because I don't see anything else happening.'

Once she had finished examining her hair, she stood up and did a tiny twirl for her friends, the girls giggling. 'Was it worth it?' she asked, smiling at the girls' nods with satisfaction. 'I'll let you all know how it went!' she exclaimed, skipping down the steps happily. Since she was only twelve, Sarah's shoes only had a tiny heel, easy enough for her to walk in. When she got older, she would probably experiment with higher heels, but she was content with the shoes she had on at the moment.

Sarah finally reached the doors leading to the Great Hall, looking around for Kyle. She saw him standing a few feet away from the door, and with a tiny sigh of relief, she went over to him, an excited smile on her face. She loved dressing up and dancing, and even though she and Kyle weren't a couple, she was glad that he had asked her to go as friends. It'd be humiliating for her if she didn't have a date at the Yule Ball. 'You look nice,' she murmured, her cheeks turning slightly pink at the compliment.

A couple of first years caught Kyle's attention. He knew two of them were Gryffindors and he even recalled the hilarious prank they had pulled off this Halloween. They seemed to be going in a group of four and Kyle remembered that was exactly how it had been last year for him. The only difference was that Rose and him had not planned to go in a group but Kelsey and Kierran, the twin brother and sister had bumped into them, literally and then they had hung out together for the rest of the night. He was hoping to catch some of his friends later on so that they could take some photographs. Kyle knew very well how his mother would demand to see the pictures from the Yule Ball. Kyle was lost in his thoughts when a girl came up to stand by him and said he looked nice. Kyle turned his head to his right to see who it was and it took him a second to realize that it was Sarah. "Hey" he said with a smile half embarrassed hoping she had not noticed that he took a second too long to recognize her. "Thanks. You look different" he said mentioning the obvious and then cursing himself for it.

Kyle had not yet reached that stage in life where he was into girls. He did like a few more than others but that was just because he was more familiar with them. There were also a few elder girls who he thought were very pretty like the Head girl or Ms.Snow, the Gryffindor Qudditch Captain but that was it. He did not wish to actually be with any of them and he was not used to giving compliments or flirting of any kind. "I mean good different" he added quickly, a little nervous. Sarah had straight brown hair and the curls she had today looked very nice but made her look different as well. "Curly hair suits you" he added with a small smile hoping that Sarah would still be willing to go to the dance and not back out after seeing him make a total fool out of himself. Kyle heard a voice coming from inside and it seemed like it was time for the headmistress to welcome them. "Shall we go inside?"he asked Sarah as he offered her his hand. As he started walking towards the hall, he got the first glimpse of the decorations. Their progress through the gates was slow as many students were entering at the same time. He was finally able to get a proper look after a few seconds. It seemed every year the decorations of Hogwarts during festives just improved. The ceiling was charmed to snow and the glittering lights made the Great hall have the setting to set in the mood for the dance.
