Transfiguration 2:3

Lesson Three: Learning Statua (chipmunk into statue)

This lesson was going to be a little more advanced than previously. As Leif entered the room, he nodded at the students already present before taking his own seat, waiting for the stragglers to file inside before closing the door. "Who remembers covering the lesson in which transfiguration was discussed as a punishment used to turn offending wizards into statues?"

It came with no surprise that most of the class raised their hands, which he was glad about. At least it meant his students had been paying attention. Something he knew could be difficult when he had spend quite some lesson time lecturing.

"We are going to perform something quite similar to this today." Leif remarked, to some shocked faces of the students. He bent down, pulling up a spacious cage containing a handful of chipmunks running around on a leafy habitat inside. "There is one difference. These animals will not be left as a statue for a length of time, unlike witches and wizards who were punished this way. As soon as I have graded your work, I will transfigure them back. This process will not harm the chipmunks, physically or otherwise. No, I did not raid a forest and capture them myself." He joked. "They've been conjured specifically for this lesson, so they aren't, to put it one way, real. I don't want to hear any objections, please. This branch of Transfiguration is necessary for even attempting later branches, so if you refuse to do the work now, you might as well not do it at all." Leif explained to them, knowing some students might feel the need to protest animal cruelty or some other such case, even if there was no use in that. He would never intentionally hurt any of the animals they worked with. Not even the insects. Which was why he was glad he was teaching the lower years and wouldn't have to tell his students about vanishing spells.

Leif calmly began to hand each of his student a chipmunk. He had gotten them from one of the previous professors, causing them to be quite docile, and used to a magical learning environment. He couldn't have students chasing them around all lesson, possibly harming the animal or themselves. Real chipmunks or not, it wasn't something he wanted to see. "Be careful and treat them with care. We don't want either of you harmed."

"The wand moment is the same we did last week," He explained as he wandered around the room. "Visualize your chipmunk turning into a statue of any material, the easiest and most common being wood or stone, then cast the spell. Metals are a little more difficult to do. The incantation is 'Statua'. Have fun and if you have any problems, I will be around to help you out." He wandered back to his desk at the front, tapping the remaining chipmunk with the tip of his wand. It lost its brown colour, instead shifting into a statue of white marble. He left the chipmunk that way for a minute so his students could see before turning it back the way it was before.

Summer had not spend too much time worrying about her classes, not with Halloween coming up. She'd much rather think about what costume she would be wearing. Obviously, she had packed multiple. She just needed to figure out which one would work best or she liked the most in this moment. That seemed to be her main priority at the moment.

Walking into the transfiguration classroom she took her seat, not bothering to raise her hand when the professor asked them a question. She did pay attention when he told them what they would be doing today though, staring at the chipmunks running around in their habitat. They were cute, but she wasn't keen on having to work with one. Surely that would be a pain, they seemed quite energetic. Once they were allowed to get started she tried to keep her chipmunk calm by petting it for a little while until it seemed comfortable enough not to run off. When it slowly moved across her desk she tapped it and spoke the incantation, watching as it slowly turned into a little statue. Cool.

Apolline had liked the halloween celebrations in the previous year, but her struggle was costumes, she wanted to have a good costume, one that other people liked as much as she did, that wasn’t too terrible or cheap looking. She wanted a perfect costume, but she didn’t have any ideas for a costume and was struggling to figure out if she had any clothes that she could make into a costume. She didn’t want to ask her mum for just any costume, because as much as she loved her mum she was sure that her mother would pick a costume she wouldn’t like and then she’d be rude if she didn’t wear it. All these thoughts of the event were swirling in Apolline’s head as she grabbed the things she needed and headed to class.

Apolline walked into the transfiguration classroom and took her usual spot in her class. She looked up at the professor and wass very eager to be able to do another spell. She liked when they got to do spells and was very eager to be able to do one. She nodded as the professor gave them a little explanation and was very reassured that it wouldn’t hurt the creatures. Apolline liked doing spells and was glad to know it wouldn’t hurt them to do it. She took a chipmunk when it was handed to her and visualised it turning to stone as the professor instructed them to do. Apolline then pointed her wand at it and said. ”statua,” she had to do the spell a couple of times before it took. She also had the professor turn it back so she could practice it again, getting it much quicker the second time around. Apolline headed out of the room feeling very pleased with herself.

Halloween was coming up and Aroha didn't really have a costume. It felt a bit weird to be doing costumes at all - her family didn't really celebrate Halloween, they just bought the candy that was on sale the day after and had a treat then. She didn't know if she'd attend or not - she was in two minds about it.

Making her way to the transfiguration classroom, Aroha took a seat and got herself ready to be disappointed in herself. Her wand was starting to come round, but everyone else seemed to have an easier time with it. She did feel a little bit bad for the chipmunks, but they were conjured ones and not real ones. Which was good because she was pretty sure they'd be considered an invasive species and if they got out it'd be real trouble. Aroha got her chipmunk and lifted up her wand, readying it. She imagined it becoming a statue in her mind before saying the incantation, "statua." To her surprise, the chipmunk transformed into a cold grey statue almost straight away. Aroha blinked, looked at the statue, then looked at her wand. A wide smile grew across her face. She'd finally accomplished a spell on the first try. Maybe transfiguration wasn't too bad after all. She returned the chipmunk statue to the professor for him to untransfigure once class was over, feeling pretty pleased she hadn't had to ask for help this time.

Of course, Kyousuke raised his hand when the question was asked. He never forgot anything that occurred in a lesson due to his rigorous study habits. He was looking forward to proving himself again with this next lesson. The spell didn't sound too complicated, and after taking the notes necessary, got himself ready to do the spell. He wanted to try a metal statue, even though that was supposedly more difficult. He just wanted to show off at this point, and prove he could do better than Apolline. His first attempt resulted in nothing, to his dismay. But concentrating harder on his second one led to an impeccable metal statue of a chipmunk. Kyousuke smirked at a job well done. Once the lesson was over, he brought the chipmunk statue back to the professor to be changed back, hoping to be told he'd done well but not needing it. External validation only got you so far after all. Much better to be inspired by yourself, Kyousuke always thought.
