Third Years Lesson Four

Professor Adler had spent a little time preparing for her next lesson with her third years. She was now stood at the head of her classroom with a large fish tank beside her, a sickly green creature with sharp little horns swimming about inside it. It was obvious the creature wanted to escape, but Professor Adler had made sure the tank was charmed so there was no way this creature was going to be escaping. She didn't need an incident on her watch. It had been a challenge to put one in a fish tank, but given they resided in Great Britain, it was the only practical way that they would be able to study the creature up close.

"Please, take your seats, you might want to take some notes for this lesson," she gave them a moment to get comfortable, hoping none of the were feeling too alarmed after last week's Boggart introduction. "As you can see, these small pale-green water creatures are quite aggressive, and this one's been trying to claw its way out now for some time," Geo didn't especially like to trap it inside a fish tank, but she had her reasons. "I don't want anyone worrying, it won't be able to get out of the tank. Now I know locking a creature in a fish tank isn't the kindest thing to do, however this little creature will try and snack on humans given half the chance, so it's better to be safe behind the glass if we want to study it." She didn't want any of her students to become a snack. "This little fella here, is called a Grindylow. They're considered dark creature by the Ministry of Magic due to their choice of diet, however they also eat fish which should be enough to keep it satisfied for the time being," although that didn't stop the Grindylow from peering at the students like Geo would stare at a slice of a chocolate cake in the fridge. "Thankfully, Grindylows are not a common part of their diet. It mostly survives on fish, algae and other small sea creatures found in their natural habitat. However you won't find these creatures between the weed beds at the bottom of lakes here in New Zealand or Australia, and they're only found in the British Isles. Interestingly enough, while humans have failed to domesticate Grindylows in the past, Merpeople have successfully tamed them before."

"Take a moment to look at the Grindylows fingers for a moment,"
it would be tricky at times, but Geo wasn't able to tap on the glass and make it additionally angry when she didn't need to. "See how long and brittle they are? Well, you should avoid getting grabbed by them as looks can be quite deceiving in this case. They might look fragile but they're incredibly strong. A Grindylow will do its very best to drown a person, and if you ever find yourself needing to escape its grasp you can use the Revulsion Jinx." Professor Adler gave everyone a moment to write that down. "You can stay and observe the Grindylow for as long as you like, otherwise there's no homework today." Besides, she wanted everyone to be ready for the challenging weeks ahead.

What was that? Susie sat down, suddenly regretting that her usual desk was at the front of the room. Every time the creature in the tank rammed itself against the glass, she startled, convinced it was about to shatter. If it did, it would jump straight onto her lap. Was it mad because Professor Adler put it in a tank? Poor thing... But Susie didn't feel too sorry for it. The creature was looking at her like it would bite her face off if someone gave it a chance. She opened up her sketchbook and started to draw the grindylow as she listened. It wasn't really a masterpiece, but it would help her remember what it looked like, if it came up in her exams. Feeling a bit unsettled still, she packed up and headed out.

Lilith was a little less hesitant about walking into DADA after talking to her Professor. Talking to the blonde woman had been a relief really. She now felt a little better about facing the Boggart in class, not a lot but a little at least. Thankfully today's topic was something else which helped her take her mind off of next week at least for a little bit. Settling next to Susie Lilith listened and took some notes. She stayed to make a little drawing of the Grindylow, though it was far from good really but at least she'd made a picture for herself. Maybe she'd gift it to Leo, he'd surely appreciate it by burning it. She certainly would.

Eli had seen grindylows before, but only ever at the reserves. His parents had taken all of them to the aquatic reserves and zoos and parklands as they were growing up and he appreciated it more now than he had back then. When he was a kid it was just fun to see some of the creatures, but these days, because he remembered certain things about them it was a lot easier on his studies. The creature they were looking at today was a Grindylow and he took down a couple of notes about it, looking at some of the illustrations some of the other students were working on. He was not an artist though so he wasn’t going to get involved with that. Extra credit should be from books, not based on a talent he lacked. But he didn’t really care, because he had his notes and that was what he cared about the most. The lesson ended soon after and he quickly packed up and left.

Jasper stalled at the entrance of the class, looking at the strange creature in the tank. It looked like it could eat them alive and once he was settled and listening to the description of a grindylow, thought it probably would. Jasper spent the lesson taking notes on what Professor Adler-Cade was telling them, then stayed a little longer to try to draw the creature. Only problem was, he wasn't a very good artist.

Winnie walked into the defence against the dark arts classroom and took her usual spot in the room. Her gaze moved towards the professor as the woman got started on what they would be covering within the lesson. She took out her notes and quill and began writing down what the professor told them about the grindylow they were looking at. It was a pretty gross fish like creature, with the gnarly set of teeth. She thought it was interesting for them to cover them when they weren’t really native to this area, but she shrugged to herself on it. Winnie then was glad to get how to repel against them before heading out of the room as the lesson was wrapped up.

Kanako came to the classroom, eyeing the creatures in the tank uneasily. She hadn't taken care of magical creatures for a reason but defence against the dark arts seemed to be relishing dark creatures this year. It was a little bit frustrating. Kanako took her seat and readied herself for a lecture. She took sparse notes, not really that interested in the funny-looking creatures, whatever they were called. Kanako thought the task of drawing was stupid - was this an arts class or a magic class? She scoffed, but decided to do a little doodle nonetheless.

Eurydice was having an awful week after the boggart session that ended up with Tizi-nii being mad at her so she wasn't really up for attending Defense. She went anyway and listened to the lesson about Grindylows, taking down notes, before leaving when it was time to go.

Sayuri went to class and stared at the creature swimming about in the tank. Interesting but also not something unfamiliar. She took notes, and had zero interest in doing the assignment. She drew in her free time but it wasn't something she wanted people to particularly know so she just left with her siblings when they were dismissed.

Jonah was both fascinated and maybe a little scared by the creature in the tank. The lesson was helpful though and he had notes, or tried to.
