Professor Adler had spent a little time preparing for her next lesson with her third years. She was now stood at the head of her classroom with a large fish tank beside her, a sickly green creature with sharp little horns swimming about inside it. It was obvious the creature wanted to escape, but Professor Adler had made sure the tank was charmed so there was no way this creature was going to be escaping. She didn't need an incident on her watch. It had been a challenge to put one in a fish tank, but given they resided in Great Britain, it was the only practical way that they would be able to study the creature up close.
"Please, take your seats, you might want to take some notes for this lesson," she gave them a moment to get comfortable, hoping none of the were feeling too alarmed after last week's Boggart introduction. "As you can see, these small pale-green water creatures are quite aggressive, and this one's been trying to claw its way out now for some time," Geo didn't especially like to trap it inside a fish tank, but she had her reasons. "I don't want anyone worrying, it won't be able to get out of the tank. Now I know locking a creature in a fish tank isn't the kindest thing to do, however this little creature will try and snack on humans given half the chance, so it's better to be safe behind the glass if we want to study it." She didn't want any of her students to become a snack. "This little fella here, is called a Grindylow. They're considered dark creature by the Ministry of Magic due to their choice of diet, however they also eat fish which should be enough to keep it satisfied for the time being," although that didn't stop the Grindylow from peering at the students like Geo would stare at a slice of a chocolate cake in the fridge. "Thankfully, Grindylows are not a common part of their diet. It mostly survives on fish, algae and other small sea creatures found in their natural habitat. However you won't find these creatures between the weed beds at the bottom of lakes here in New Zealand or Australia, and they're only found in the British Isles. Interestingly enough, while humans have failed to domesticate Grindylows in the past, Merpeople have successfully tamed them before."
"Take a moment to look at the Grindylows fingers for a moment," it would be tricky at times, but Geo wasn't able to tap on the glass and make it additionally angry when she didn't need to. "See how long and brittle they are? Well, you should avoid getting grabbed by them as looks can be quite deceiving in this case. They might look fragile but they're incredibly strong. A Grindylow will do its very best to drown a person, and if you ever find yourself needing to escape its grasp you can use the Revulsion Jinx." Professor Adler gave everyone a moment to write that down. "You can stay and observe the Grindylow for as long as you like, otherwise there's no homework today." Besides, she wanted everyone to be ready for the challenging weeks ahead.
