Third Years Lesson Five

Mallory was sure this lesson would be interesting, if not a bit dangerous. She had carefully counted out her candles, making sure they had enough. This was part of the reason she'd asked Atkin to watch Peter for a few days- she didn't want her baby here if she could avoid it. Besides, Peter was too young to be away from her for too awfully long, but she was sure he'd be alright, and he needed the bonding time with his dad.

She smiled as the students entered the classroom. Today, Mallory wasn’t wearing robes, she was in jeans and a burgundy off the shoulder shirt, and black sneakers, something easier to move in. She smiled and looked at her students. "Good morning everyone. This will be a fairly short lecture as we will spend the day outside," She brushed her hair back behind her shoulder, she had left it down today. With a wave of her wand, the word Incendio was written neatly on the board. "Now, this incantation is for conjuring fire," she clarified and began pacing slowly in front of the students.

"Fire is a dangerous force and when conjuring it, one must learn to control it's size at the very least, not doing so can end in devastating consequences," the young woman explained as she waved her wand and one candle landed on her open palm. "Incendio!" she spoke clearly, flicking her wrist gracefully, releasing a small jet of fire towards the candle. She smiled at the warm glow of the burning wick. Apple cinnamon was one of her favorite scents. "Conjuring the fire is not the hard part, it is the control of how big or dangerous it will be that often proves the most difficult. Fire can be destructive, so we must be careful with it. Concentration and calmness is the key for this spell," Mallory made sure to stress how serious this spell was, her eyes wandering over the students.

"Try to keep your emotions under control when you cast this spell, and keep your mind on the vision of how big you want this flame to be," Mallory sounded unusually serious, taking on a stern tone that even her wild siblings had always listened. "The flame will reflect your emotional state. If you have something going on, and you don’t feel like you can safely perform this spell, you will not be punished, come to talk to me and we’ll do it separately later, I do not want any of you practicing this spell unless you are sure.

She smiled, her stance softening a little. “Okay, now bring your wands and you may leave your things. Head to the grounds and you'll find a spot there with gathered wood, as if there will be a bonfire. I'll be right behind all of you," she told them, motioning for them to begin heading down as she picked up the box of candles and then followed them out.

"Third years, take one step back and we'll start with your practice," she watched as the students followed her command, and took a moment to make sure there was adequate spacing between each student before then giving them each a candle, "Your target is the candle right in front of each of you. Concentrate. Aim well. Calm yourself. Cast the spell, once you've got it, place the candle in the ground and this time aim at it more, do the spells as many times as you think is necessary," she instructed and watched the students, while she went around them looking for anyone who needed her help. There were occasional instances that the grass near the students caught fire because of poor aim, but she was quick to put it out all the time so her students could resume practicing without worry, though that left the poor grassy grounds singed.

She would have to fix that after class. And then there were other times when the unlit bonfire would catch fire because of the aim as well. Of course, she would put off the fire immediately as well. After some time, Mallory had decided that her students had enough and she clapped her hands to get their attention. "Well, that's it for now, guys. When you want to practice, you may come approach me any time and I'll supervise," the young woman reminded them, waving off her class to fix up any damage in the grounds. "Class dismissed."

Apolline walked into the charms classroom and took her usual spot in the room, though she wasn’t sitting for very long, the professor had them quickly moving out of the room and to the outdoors, where they’d be doing the fire spell. She took a few notes from what the professor was saying about it. She took her wand with her outside and then when they were outside made sure she had enough space and then thought about the spell. She took a candle and then took her wand and said. ”Incendio,” It took a few tries but she did eventually get it and then was able to practice it over and over until the professor dismissed them.

Kyousuke entered the classroom but soon after taking his seat, they were off to go outside. He paid close attention to the professor, noting the correct pronounciation and the necessity of calm. Kyousuke was a pretty calm person generally, so it didn't take much to feel ready to try the spell. "Incendio," he said, aiming at a candle in front of him. The flames spluttered somewhat, not nearly enough to light the wick. It took Kyousuke a couple of tries, but eventually the flames came bursting out, melting some of the wax in the process. But the candle was lit, and that was what counted. The lesson ended soon after that and Kyousuke went on his way.
