After the holidays, Mhairi had a brief chance to experience the world as other had too, although almost as quickly as she'd gained this ability she'd lost it again when she'd returned to school. It wouldn't work while she was at the castle and so the seventh year had once again be plunged into silence to complete her last semester at Hogwarts. Entering her last ever Yule Ball, it was disheartening to know that she would never get to hear it as the other students would, although she had already told herself she wasn't about to miss the last dance regardless of whether or not she could hear the music. She drifted through the hall, her long dress trailing a little behind her and she was careful not to bump into anyone else. It was hard to dance when she couldn't hear the music, and didn't have anyone to dance with, so instead she closed her eyes while in the middle of the dance floor, and just moved in time to the music that played in her head, tracks that her mum had introduced her to over the holidays, wanting to just make the most of being able to let go.

First Yule in summer and now Valentine's in fall, Katy wasn't sure how the holidays didn't drive half the school crazy being all backwards. But today had been a lot of fun, running around the school with all the roses and now stepping into the hall with its own canopy of flowers. Katy made a few laps of the hall, grabbing a drink and taking it all. She'd discovered quickly that her feet weren't going to handle standing still for very long with her shoving them into heels after running around so much today so she was intent to keep moving. She'd been hoping to maybe spot Emilia or maybe some of her roommates, but so far no real luck.

She did spy a girl in a lovely flower dress out apparently alone on the dance floor and Katy wasn't about to let any gorgeous girls dance alone on Valentine's day, herself included, so she made her way out to the dance floor. She gave the girl a bright smile as she approached even though her eyes seemed to be closed. "Hey, I love your dress," She said to her, doing a quick little turn by herself before trying to match the girl's steps. The rhythm was a little odd, but Katy hoped she was at least close.

Mhairi opened her eyes as she felt a light breeze of someone passing her, and smiled at the girl who had joined her, reading her lips carefully as she began to dance. It was hard to dance when Mhairi couldn't hear the music, and for a moment the seventh year wasn't sure whether this student was dancing to the music, or whether Mhairi had managed to coincidentally time her own movements to what the girl was hearing herself. Regardless of the complications, the Hufflepuff chuckled in amusement, enjoying the time right there and then, and continued to move a little more, exaggerating the movements. "Thank you," she said, not using the monotone of her voice and she assumed it would have been too loud in the room anyway for her to have been properly heard over the music, and there was no need to strain herself when it was likely the other girl was lip reading too for the most part. "You look beautiful," she added sincerely, admiring her from head to toe. Glad that she'd been joined, Mhairi reached out to offer her hands, "I'm Mhairi," the blonde smiled, lifting her arms to spin the brunette under her arm, watching the movements of her dress.

Katy beamed at the girl, happily taking her hands to let her spin her, enjoying the sensation of her dress flowing around her. "Woo, hah, thank you. I'm Katy," She said, letting her hand linger just a moment before she dropped it to brush a few stray strands of hair from her eyes. "Take it's that okay I joined you," She said, falling back into step with Mhairi's little off-beat rhythm. "Do you mind?" Katy asked, feeling bold as she stepped a little closer to take up Mhairi's hands again to dance a little closer. It was Valentine's, Katy was gonna get in a little slow dancing if she could.

Sometimes it was hard to lip read when Mhairi wasn’t looking at someone directly, but she thought she managed to catch the end of what the girl was saying as she finished her spin. The Hufflepuffs smile widened when Katy asked if it had been okay to join her, nodding in response. Of course it had been alright, although it was still kind of her to assume that Mhairi hadn’t just been blinding waiting for another date to show up. As far as she was concerned she hadn’t needed to come with anyone, and proved to she could still find new friends once she was here. “I’m glad you did,” Mhairi mouthed back, taking her hands once more as she stood a little closer. The blonde relaxed slightly, trying to let Katy lead since she was the one who could hear the music, resorting to swaying at a pace that just felt natural with her. “What’s it like?” She asked, tilting her head slightly in curiosity, “the music.” Perhaps Katy would think it a strange question, and it was to someone who seemed as though they were dancing, but after being introduced to music over the holidays Mhairi wished she could have heard the Great Hall in motion during her last dance.

It was a relief Mhairi seemed to be enjoying having Katy with her, and Katy was happy to have someone to hang out who wasn't scared of dancing. "Oh can you not- Oh okay," Mhairi's question confused her for a moment, since they had both been communicating fine, though Katy figured she was making do half guessing what Mhairi was saying over the noise in the hall, so maybe Mhairi was doing the same. "Well, let's see-" Katy said, taking a moment to pay a bit more to the song outside of just following its tempo as she swayed with Mhairi. "It's pretty dated honestly," She settled on with a laugh. "I've been listening to a lot of muggle music lately. It's so much more interesting. The school could take some notes," She said, excited to gush a little about her more recent niche interest. "Your dancing's pretty impressive if you're just winging it, you know," Katy added, deciding to go for it and see if Mhairi would let her twirl her this time.
