Haze settled in the night sky as the moon swung lazily into view. It lit the streets and illuminated the old thatched tavern roof. In the evening glow of light hung the sign listing the establishment to be the Old Horse and Cart. The sign began to swing as it was battered by the chill wind howling in.
Inside the tavern, which stood aglow with warmth from an open fire, people chattered cheerfully for thoughts of their future or merry recollections of the past. That was, all those in attendance but one. This man, with his dark hair and disconsolate eyes, sat silently peering down the rim of his glass. The amber liquid had been partially drained, and he contemplated ordering another.
A creak from the door signalled the arrival of another customer, and the barkeep shifted his gaze from the saddened man to that of the man joining the hubbub. He greeted him with a broad grin, knowing him well.
