Derek had been surprised in the prior year to have really enjoyed quidditch, enjoyed it to the point where he had joined and gotten on the team. The teen hadn’t expected to get on the team but he had and this was now his second year of it. The boy was very eager to get started on it again. There was just so much fun to be had, it was so engaging and it was just a whole lot of fun to him. The teen had come out to the pitch knowing that he would have to really keep up his practices, with upcoming games Derek really needed to make sure he was practicing a lot, so he was back out on the pitch with his broom in hand and a quaffle under his arm. It was as he wandered out on to the field that he noticed someone else was flying about in the air. He took a few moments to look at the person and noticed that the person who was flying was someone from the slytherin team. He decided he would at least offer to fly with him. Derek hopped on to the broom and shot up into the air, ”Hey, Mordred right?” the slytherin greeted with a loud shout and a wave to ensure he got the other boy’s attention. ”Do you want to practice together?”

Mordred Cavanaugh always made time to practice Quidditch. Even if he did not make his home team, he was going to practice because Quidditch was how his family made their money, and it was how he was going to make his in the future. There was always testing and trials to do and make. The boy was doing laps, working on his speed. He was not working on his flips and tricks just yet, as he had not gotten that far in his warm ups. He always warmed up before he started to practice. A couple laps always did the trick. The second year came to a complete stop when someone called his name. He looked and saw that it was Derek, a chaser on his house team. Mordred smiled and flew closer to the guy. He nodded that he indeed was Mordred. "I'm always down for a challenge!" he said confidently. Derek was a chaser, so he was probably faster than him and knew how much energy he needed to exert to get a certain outcome. Mordred flew over to the hoops, ready for Derek to try and score.

Derek smiled as the boy agreed to fly and practice with him, Derek was very keen to get his practicing up, he was very keen to be a good enough player, he was ready to do his team proud. It would take spending a little time with they other members of the time, and practicing with them as well as alone. He flew back to the ground and picked a quaffle, he tucked it under his arm and flew up to where the other boy was. ”You ready?” he wanted to start off with a few easy shots from different distances and angles, of course not easily achieved when in an actual game situation, but to help him, make sure that he remains on target while working. A base level of throwing and scoring was good. The teen lined up his first shot, appearing to be aiming for the middle hoop, but actually aiming for the lower left hoop. He threw the ball hard and watched it fly rapidly towards the hoops, he was keen to see if Mordred would manage to catch up with it to catch it or throw it back to him, or if it might sail through.

The were not very many times when Mordred was serious. However, now was one of those times. Quidditch was his heart and soul. It was what had given his family so much wealth, and it was bound to be what helped him succeed in the future. Mordred simply gave a small finger sign saying that he was good. Talking would only ruin his concentration. He knew Derek was not just going to go for the middle hoop on the first try. It just seemed too easy, and Mordred did not want Derek to take it easy on him. As soon as he threw the ball, he zoomed towards the left hitting the quaffle away from the hoop with the back of his broom. It should be is partner's instinct to go after it. It was a new trick he had learned from reading a book and them watching games. "How was that?!" he asked, staying at the lower left hoop.

Derek had taken aim, and watched with both some joy and some frustration that the kid had blocked his goal. It had been rather on target and had he not blocked it. Derek was absolutely sure it would’ve sailed in. He flew forward though and grabbed the ball. A good keeper would be far more helpful to the team as a whole and he was certainly happy that the boy had managed it. This was just practices. It was a lower stakes practice where it would be better to spend the time practicing and getting it wrong that getting everyone in. Derek gave a wide smile at the boy, ”Excellent!”’ the boy replied speaking loudly. The teen took aim again, this time, he flew towards the furtherest hoop and then took aim at the same hoop that he’d tried to do before. The boy was pretty sure that he had tricked him a little, but hoped that the boy would fall for it, and then learn from it. Derek really enjoyed playing quidditch and liked the way that the scoring worked in the quidditch game versus rugby, getting it over a line was easy, there was a lot of space for him to score. He had always liked rugby a whole bunch but quidditch was very quickly becoming his favourite sport.

Mordred enjoyed the praise he received from Derek. He enjoyed most all praise he received because that was his goal in life, to be praised and glorified. It seemed like a bit of a selfish goal to have, but Mordred grew up not receiving the attention he wanted from the people he wanted it from, like his mother. Now that Derek had the ball, Mordred was attentive to what the guy was doing so that he could block him. He felt like he was good at faking, which Mordred was not used to. He was used to the person being obvious about where they were trying to aim, which was not useful to him here right now. Mordred flew so that he was in front of the furthest hoop, and when Derek threw the quaffle at the other hoop, he wasn't close to catching the ball, but it went through the hoop. How annoying. This did not put Mordred in a bad mood, but it certainly did not put him in a good one. He caught the quaffle and threw it back at Derek. "That was a good one!" he said, trying to hide his frustration.

Derek was very pleased when the ball sailed through the hoops. He needed to be a better player, he needed to do well. The teen needed to score enough and manage to do enough goals. He needed to help mordred be better at stopping him scoring while still actually scoring. The slytherin. Nodded and caught the quaffle when it was thrown back out. He wanted to get better at this and needed to maybe help Mordred get better at it too but he didn’t really know how. ”I think when you’re looking to where they’re going to score, watch which hoops they’re looking at not necessarily where they’re heading,” Derek flew along the front of the hoops and then threw the ball again, towards the middle hoop. He threw it quickly and as hard as he could. He did hope that Mordred was closer to catching it, while also still letting him actually score. It was a difficult balance for him to achieve and he wasn’t captain he didn’t know how to help people.

Mordred hated failure. He felt like he was a failure whenever he made a mistake. There were many people who looked down on him because of how he came to be in this world, and that made him angry. He was not really able to express this anger through Quidditch, but he felt this was a better way to spend his time instead of sulking about how frustrated he was with life. Mordred was going to have to put what Derek said to the test during this practice. He was open to advice and criticism as long as it was necessary, and since he had let the quaffle sail though the first time, he needed to get better. For his team. He was not going to let them down. Mordred simply nodded at Derek's advice. However, he did not let that stop him from preventing the quaffle from entering the middle hoop. It had happened like instinct. He had been looking for something to distract him from his disappointment, which was Quidditch for him. He threw the ball back to Derek with a small smile on his face.

Derek was smiling lightly as the other boy managed to stop the quaffle from going in the hoops. He caught the ball as it was thrown back out and after flying out a little he flew back in and attempted to score again. There was a little smile on his features as he threw the ball, hopeful that it would actually go in the hoops, but also hoped it was helping him improve too. ”Do you want to switch a little bit?” the teen asked. He knew that it was a good idea to get practice in more than one way. Being able to stop the ball from going into the hoops as a chaser would help him in learning how to aim and catch, hot to be quick and expect the moves that the other chasers or the the keeper. He wasn’t sure if Mordred would want to do that but he he could think that it was a good suggestion and change things up. He thought it would make for a little better practice. Vary up what they were doing. ”it’ll keep things interesting? And get more practice in different ways?”

Mordred prepped while waiting for Derek to come back around with the quaffle. He was able to catch the quaffle, and when Derek asked if he wanted to switch. Mordred tucked the quaffle under his arm and flew to Derek. "That sounds fun!" he said happily. He was sure that he was going to be bad at this position, but he decided it would be interesting to do!
