It had taken longer than Teddy expected to a receive a letter from his ma, to which he was both relieved and concerned about. Either she had been too busy managing the family tree farm or attending parties to have found out about his Sorting result, or she was too furious to write. Teddy had half-hoped that she would have simply forgotten about him once he left for Hogwarts, but the red envelope that an owl had delivered that morning shattered that fantasy. Really, it had been too much to expect that she wouldn't take notice of what Teddy was doing, as though he hadn't wondered if his name was "What-will-the-neighbours-think" when he was three.

He'd quickly hidden the howler in his robes before racing out of the castle to find somewhere to open it with minimal casualties. It had occurred to him, as he entered the courtyard, that he could choose to not open the letter at all, but there was a small part of Teddy that thought maybe his family would be proud of him for getting into Ravenclaw. He found a quiet ledge to sit on and broke the seal of the envelope. There was a few moments of blessed silence before the furious voice of Karen Hoshino filled the room.

"THEODORE HIROTO HOSHINO! I WILL NOT HAVE YOU TARNISHING THE FAMILY NAME WITH YOUR FOOLISHNESS! I CANNOT BELIEVE YOU WOULD DO SOMETHING SO SELFISH! I KNEW I SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE FIRM ON THE IMPORTANCE OF JOINING SLYTHERIN HOUSE, IT'S MY OWN FAULT FOR BEING A BAD MOTHER. THIS IS CLEARLY A MISTAKE AND YOU WILL BE FIXING IT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. WE WILL BE DISCUSSING THIS WHEN YOU RETURN HOME FOR CHRISTMAS, BUT FOR NOW YOU NEED TO-"

Teddy didn't know what he needed to do, as he panicked, grabbing at the howler and shoved the entire envelope in his mouth to make it stop. He couldn't take any more of the yelling and he could feel himself shaking in the face of her anger. He knew his ma would be mad, but he hadn't expected it to hurt so much.

Evan had been sitting in the courtyard quietly by herself, enjoying working on her embroidery. She didn't normally enjoy being outdoors at all but she had decided that she needed some fresh air, and Evan felt the courtyard was nice enough, she wasn't going to go down to the lake or anywhere near the forbidden forest.

She was satisfied with her work so far, she had been trying to free-hand a small kitten, and she was struggling a little with the ears, but it wasn't too bad. She could still see it coming together. As she examined her work however, she suddenly heard a voice begin to yell at somebody. She jumped, lucky not to prick her finger, and looked around for the source of the yelling. Over in the direction of where the yelling was coming from, stood a boy in Ravenclaw uniform, but he didn't appear to be the one doing the yelling... Evan blinked... she really did not know what she was seeing but the boy looked horribly upset, so she packed up her embroidery without hesitation, and scurried over to him. As she approached, the voice was suddenly interrupted when the boy appeared to... shove a piece of parchment inside his mouth? She really did not understand one bit, even the things she was hearing made no sense to her.

"That was horrible, do you need help?" She said as she stopped a few steps away from the Ravenclaw. She didn't think there was anything she could do, but if there was, she wanted to do it. "What was that?" she added, under her breath.

It was a bit weird being back at school, the noise of all the other students was so different to the oppressive quiet of his place. Sometimes, Kas almost missed the quiet though, deciding to cut away from the after breakfast rush in the entrance hall and sidling out into the courtyard. The crush of bodies was overwhelming and Kas took a moment to catch his breath, fussing with the hair he could see wasn't laying quite flat from the corner of his eye. The easy morning quiet of the courtyard was broken by the sudden sound of shouting and Kas immediately turned to look as some poor kid got the howler of his life from what could only be one very anger mother. Only a mum would be able to impart that level of personal disappointment, Kas was sure.

Kas had to stifle a laugh though as the boy panicked, stuffing the howler into his mouth, which was quick thinking in a sense. Kas did wonder if it would actually stop the rest of the message though. Another girl wondered over to check on him, and Kas couldn't help his own burning curiosity at the display to join them. "That, was a howler," He told the girl, taking a seat on a wall across from the poor guy and frowning. "If you open your mouth do you think she'll keep going?" Kas mused, feeling a smile creep back onto his face. He himself had been toeing the line with his parents as much as he could while being half-way across the country from them, and Kas was grateful he hadn't quite made it to howler territory yet. "A howler this early though, that's impressive, my sympathy," Kas said, offering the boy a knowing little half-smile. "It's good though, disappoint them early so you don't have to worry about it later." He offered. That was usually Kas' strategy, he'd annoy his parents with something big so they'd be too worked up about that than to get mad about anything else he was doing at the time.

Teddy had made a mistake. A horrible, possibly catastrophic mistake that he instantly regretted the moment he closed his mouth. And, now his terrible, horrible mistake had witnesses. The only options he could see were to swallow the howler and hope it didn't end up screaming through his stomach, or spit it out right in front of the two kids who had approached him. Teddy didn't like either of these choices.

His brow furrowed as the boy spoke. He clearly didn't understand that Teddy couldn't just disappoint his family. They were counting on him to make a good impression and uphold the family name. He opened his mouth to retort, forgetting entirely that his mouth was full of howler, and was immediately interrupted by a sudden screaming. "-WRITING TO YOUR FATHER, AND HE WILL-" and he slammed his hand over his mouth before any more could escape. He looked between the other two, pleadingly, as though either of them could save him from the wrath of his ma.

Evan hadn't noticed there had been a Hufflepuff student nearby, until he spoke. "What on earth is a howler?!" she asked, desperately. She couldn't understand why the second boy was acting as though this was funny or entertaining. Not only was the yelling itself terrifying, but the things that were being said were really awful. Evan felt terrible for the Ravenclaw.

"I don't see how you can find this at all amusing." Evan grumbled, giving the second boy a stern look. She could tell that he was a little older than her, but with the Ravenclaw's mouth full of howler, somebody had to stick up for him. Suddenly, Evan was startled as the yelling began again. She quickly turned to look at the Ravenclaw, who had his mouth open - only for a split second - until he slammed it shut again. Evan rocked back and forth from one foot to the other "Oh my god spit it out spit it out spit it out!!"

Kas nearly choked at the muffled yelling when the boy, Theodore if he'd heard correctly, opened his mouth, having to shove a fist to his mouth to keep his composure. "How can you not?" He asked the girl, wheezing a little. She had a look about her that made Kas suspect she'd never get a howler in her life. "You get a howler you gotta laugh at what you can," He said, clearing his throat only to lose it again at the girl's panic. "No no no, swallow it, she's just gonna keep yelling." He urged the boy. As funny as it was, none of them, especially Theodore needed to hear anymore dumb stuff his mother needed to say.

Teddy's head swung between the two other children so fast he was worried it was going to fly off. The girl's panic was making him panic, and he couldn't tell if the other boy was trying to help or make fun of him. He could feel the howler becoming decidedly soggy inside his mouth, which was frankly, disgusting, and opened his mouth again to see if maybe he'd get lucky and the howler had stopped on its own. "-BROTHERS WOULD NEVER DO SUCH A-" Nope, spitting it out was a bad idea. Teddy shot the boy a reproachful look before screwing his eyes shut and gritting his teeth. He swallowed the wad of enchanted parchment with a grimace and opened his eyes again to stare blankly, shell-shocked at what had just occurred and hoping desperately to escape any further consequences of eating a howler.

"I don't know what a howler is! I still don't see the funny side!" Evan still had no idea why there had been a disembodied voice yelling at the Ravenclaw - Theodore, if she had heard correctly- but when he opened his mouth yet again, the yelling continued. Evan covered her ears, not wanting to hear any more of the horrible things the voice had to say to Theodore. For a second, Evan considered just fleeing from the courtyard all the way back up to the Gryffindor tower and hiding in her bed for the rest of the day, this had not been what Evan had had in mind when she had decided she'd needed fresh air. Just as she was about to turn and run, however, Evan saw Theodore swallow. She gasped in horror, not knowing what this could possibly mean might happen next...

Kas rolled his eyes when the Gryffindor girl kept freaking out, clicking his tongue at her. "A howler is what you get when you, what was it? 'Tarnish the family name'," He said, offering Theodore another reluctant sympathetic look. Kas wanted to say he'd been there done that, but honestly he'd never have the guts to step too far out of line yet. At least not in any way his parents could prove. Then again his parents were more likely to stew in quiet anger than throw a fit over something like what house he was in. "It's a letter that yells at you," He finished bluntly, not really feeling up to babying some muggleborn when much more interesting things were happening. Like Theodore swallowing the howler.

Kas had to pause for a moment, half in shock that Theodore just ate the dang howler, and partly because he was curious if they might still be able to hear it in his intestines or something. Content at the newly found silence, Kas offered the poor kid a tentative thumbs up. "I can't believe you actually did that, well done." Theodore still looked a bit green, and Kas wondered absently if the howler would still be able to yell if he puked it up.

It felt like something was ripping itself up inside his stomach, and Teddy couldn't tell if he was imagining it or if the howler had given up and shredded itself after being swallowed. It didn't hurt at all, but he still felt a little queasy as he came to his senses.

He tried laughing incredulously as the boy seemingly congratulated him, but it came out as more of a strangled scream. The Gryffindor girl at least had the common sense to be horrified and Teddy felt a little sorry for her. He was surprised she didn't know about howlers, and thought maybe she hadn't done anything bad enough for her own parents to send one yet. "Why would you tell me to do that!" Teddy wheezed at the boy, a little hysterically. He wondered if some of the leftover anger from the howler had leeched into his body, because he felt like he wanted to either smash everything in sight or hide under a blanket and never come out again. Teddy was still too stunned to cry, but a wave of discomfort washed over him, and he tilted forward as though he was about to throw up from the embarrassment alone.
