Wendall had been very excited to receive the call, inviting him to start his new job at Hogwarts. He hadn't been on the grounds for over ten years and he was very keen to see how much things had changed, and whether there was anyone still there that he knew. As the new professor waited for his sixth years to arrive, he was making the final preparations to the desks around the greenhouse, sweeping any last minute soil that had found its way someplace it shouldn't.
"Hello!" The man greeted the class with an impressive smile. "My name is Professor Layton, and I am your new Herbology teacher for the rest of your time here at school," that was very strange to say out loud. "Professor Castillo has stepped down from this job, which I'm hoping isn't a sign that I've stepped into the wrong classroom, but we'll see." Wendall was quite sure he knew was he was in for thanks to his cousin teaching the subject a year ago, but he would soon find out for himself.
"Today we are going to be learning about Screechsnaps," Wendall gestured to the benches in front of the desks. "They're semi-sentient and quite vocal plants, which can be a blessing and a curse, because they will definitely let you know if they need something!" Not unlike his eldest. "You'll be taking care of one of these for this semester so you can get to know what they're like, and hopefully by the time the exams come around, you'll know what the Screechsnap is trying to tell you!" It would be hard for the sixth years not to notice.
"The first thing I want you to do is to make your new friend," Wendall wanted them to choose the plant that called to them, "and once you've chosen the Screechsnap you want to look after, you'll need to repot it. Make sure you give them a good mixture of water and fertilizer. They'll let you know if they don't have enough of either, so keep an eye on any writhing or vocalisations for signs they're unhappy," the professor warned, giving a side eye to one of the plants that started to lean in his direction.
As the class got to work choosing and repotting their plants, Professor Layton was walking through the desks, helping out any student that seemed to be having some trouble. "This year is going to be very important, especially if you want to progress to your NEWT next year. You'll need to pass with a grade of E or above if you want to take this class next year." Wendall hoped he'd see some of these students next year too, because that meant he'd taught them well enough to pass. "Once you're finished here, feel free to head back to the castle!" he said, dismissing them as he carefully stepped over a plant pot, proud of himself for not ending up in it.
