Sixth Years: Lesson Four

Professor Nakamura waited patiently for the class to take their seats. He smiled at them as they did, getting ready to speak. “I hope you enjoyed last week’s adventures into mathematics and stars. Today we’ll be taking a look at a subject a bit closer to home – that of the sun and moon.” Professor Nakamura clasped his hands in front of him and looked out at his students, hoping they were paying attention. “While not fully understood, we do know that magic comes from the sun’s energy. All of you are born with the ability to utilise that energy when you cast spells. However, it’s not just us that have this magic – magical plants and creatures also utilise this energy, in differing extents. I, of course, have examples for you. Fluxweed, picked only at a full moon, will retain some of the moon’s energy, and therefore, magic. This is used in the polyjuice potion. If picked at a different time, the fluxweed won’t be as potent and oftentimes the potion will fail entirely. Another example is the mooncalf. These creatures only emerge on a full moon. It also, on the first full moon of spring, will engage in mating dances that wreak havoc on muggle farms. These can be quite complex patterns. According to the maramataka, the Māori moon calendar, the full moon is also one of the most optimal times to plant.” Professor Nakamura paused, taking a breath. The next subject would be a bit heavier.

“By now you should know about humans affected by lycanthropy. Lacking the right medication, they will transform into a werewolf if exposed to the full moon’s light. They are even affected on days leading up to the full moon; as the moon grows in size, so does its energy – or magic. To finish with, some potions are also affected by the moon. Potions like veritaserum are sensitive to the moon cycle.” Professor Nakamura finished his lecture with another smile. “And that’s it for tonight. Class dismissed.”

Roleplay the lesson for full marks.

June made her way to the classroom and found her usual spot close to the professor. Lately she really started to dislike this class, but she had to hold on. And she still performed well because she had an bigger goal in mind and it was important for her to be succesfull in all. If she liked it or not. But this year she still thought it was important. Perhaps next year she would look differently at it.

She sat ready to take notes as the professor started with the lesson. He told them they were gonna look at the sun and moon today. He went on about the sun's energy and June made some notes of what the professor told them. The lesson suddenly went about fluxwood and stuff and June was confused but it was all part of the moon energy. And connected to eachother it seemed. Ofcourse the lycanthropy.part was something they had learned about already and it was kind of an boring lesson the blonde thought. But she made sure she had it all on her notes what she thought the professor thought of as important for exams for example. When the lesson was over she left the classroom.

Theodore strolled into Astronomy. Knowing his current class standing, it was turning into an interesting class. The professor had been giving him lower marks than he wanted, which was a little more annoying. A's weren't really something he wanted for his final grade, and he assumed that the professor was marking him down for his behavior in class. It wasn't really a new thing to happen to him. And Theo still got his EE's and O's. Besides, he'd been doing the work, so in his opinion, he really shouldn't be marked down. He'd been getting decent grades in his other classes here, though he did get point deductions which weren't weird either. Theo was never gunning for top point earner, anyway. He just wanted the grades to reflect his awesome work. And so, if the professor was going to continue marking him down anyway, Theo was perfectly sure that he was now given free rein to cause chaos. "Guess I’m solar-powered baby because I have a dazzling personality," he crowed and whistled loudly, smirk on his face. As Professor Nakamura mentioned the full moon, he let out a loud wolf howl before the professor could elaborate. Still, the thought of werewolves brought a more serious expression to his face, and he caught himself drumming his fingers on the desk. As the class packed up, Theo slung his bag over his shoulder and walked to the door but not before he could give a mock bow and a sh!t-eating grin to the Astronomy professor. "Thanks for the lesson, Sensei!"
