Second Years, Week One [Welcome]

Professor Adler was ready for another semester, keen to get back into the flow of things after the break away. With so many children (or young adults these days) running around their house during the summer she had to admit one thing; coming back to her classroom was almost just as busy and she wouldn't have had it any other way. "Welcome back to another year everyone, I hope you had a lovely break," she began, stood in her long black jacket with her blonde hair braided neatly at the back of her head.

The woman cast her eyes over the group in the front of her, "Now I know not all of you will be keen to continue this subject, and perhaps some of you may even be considering whether or not to drop Defence next year" the professor began, "however you will find that this year, lessons are more practical than they were in your first, and you'll get many more opportunities to use your wands." Professor Adler believed that now they were second years, they could be trusted not to do anything silly that might have caused harm to another student. Only time would tell if she was right. "This year, you'll also be given a choice of how you'd like to work. I'm well aware that everyone will have their preferred methods of working, each as valuable as the other, so.. if you would rather continue with theoretical learning as you did last year, you're more than welcome to stay at your desk and takes notes and submit essays, however you'll also spot there are a number of dummies in the room, which I encourage everyone to practice with, but especially if you're someone that learns better by putting the theoretical to good use. The more you practice, the better equipped you'll be for using the spells we learn in this class," the woman continued, gesturing to the dummies behind her that resembled those from the dungeons.

"We will be going through various jinxes and curses this year." Professor Adler continued, "and we'll also cover the counter-curses for them, which is perhaps even more important than knowing how to cast the jinx or curse in the first place," this was Defence after all. "Some of you may also be participating in the Duelling Tournament for the first time this year if you're signed up to the Student Defence Association, so it's likely you'll see some of these spells performed during the event, if not use some for yourself." Professor Adler wasn't against students practicing their spell work on one another with supervision if it was deemed necessary for their development, but she wanted to ensure that should anyone want to do that, it would be in safer circumstances than while in a room full of their classmates, so they'd be working against the dummies unless otherwise requested.

Professor Adler began to take a few steps closer to the students, standing tall as a smile grew on her face once more. "Now back to the topic of jinxes and curses, can anyone give me a definition of either of these?" The woman chose one of the students that had raised their hand, nodding as they told her the answer. "Very good! Ten points to you," the blonde was glad that someone had done their reading. Geo continued, choosing another student at random this time, "and what about the difference between a Jinx and a Curse. Can you tell me that?" Professor Adler was impressed with the student as they gave her another correct answer, "Excellent! You can have ten points too." This was going to be a good year. "While both of these are spells, the main difference is their severity. You might consider a Jinx to be harmless or unintentional, perhaps causing an inconvenience to someone, however a Curse is more serious, when someone is actively trying to cause injury." Professor Adler had a hard time considering any type of spell to be a "prank" given that the things she'd seen, but as long as she could help students learn to defend themselves she'd consider her role here a success.

"Next week we will be exploring our first Jinx, so have a think about whether you're someone that prefers theoretical or practical learning so that you're prepared for what you're going to focus on," Geo noted. "For your homework today, I would like you to list three Jinxes and three Curses, including their effects. If you're unsure or struggling to know of any, I would suggest paying a visit to the library to begin with." Geo would always be around to help her students, but it would be good if they learned to take the initiative to search for themselves, too. "See you next week and don't forget to bring your wands!"

Zack knew that this year DADA would have to study a lot and take it much more seriously, but he had already prepared for it during his free time. He settled into one of the free seats in the classroom, which was almost closer to the professor. He took everything he needed out of his bag, then put it on the floor and waited for the lesson to start. As soon as the lesson started, Zack wrote down everything the professor said, because you never knew what was useful and what wasn't. Then they were also involved when the professor asked questions. He had to think a little before answering, but after a second he raised his hand. "A curse is one of the three types of dark magic. A curse is the worst and most cruel thing in dark magic." he said, hoping that he answered correctly. He let the others answer the rest of the questions. He just wrote down the answers in his notes. By the end of the lesson, Zack tried to write down everything the professor said, then at the end of the lesson, he also wrote down what was expected in the next lesson. After packing his things into his bag, he said goodbye to the professor and left the classroom.

Can a human resist the power of the Imperius Curse?

Nico walked into the defence against the dark arts classroom and took his usual spot in the room. he glanced towards the professor as the woman got started. He took his quill and then nodded along with it, glad that they'd be doing a little more spell work. He liked essays fine, but it was nice to do some physical spells. eventually the lesson was moved for students to give answers and Nico just keenly listened along to what was being said. he did so until the lesson was wrapped up and he was able to leave the room.

Hinemoa was a bit apprehensive about Defense classes, but she knew it was necessary to learn about, just in case. Better to be too safe than not safe enough. She took her seat and listened as Professor Adler-Cade began the lesson. She was excited to hear they would be doing practical work this year, immediately looking forward to the class more. When the professor asked questions she put her hand up both times, pleased to be picked for the second question. "A jinx is milder and doesn't usually cause any long-term harm, a curse can actually seriously hurt people and they're much harder to get rid of." She grinned proudly through the rest of the lesson, already excited to get to do some real spellcasting next week.
