Second Years, Lesson One

FIRST LESSON
Noel was reading over some of the homework assignments from the first years, figuring to start with it right away. But than the second years began to walk in the classroom and he put the assignments beside him on an pile, to focus on this class. He than stood up and welcomed them with an friendly smile. When everyone was inside he closed the door with an easy wave of his hand. And took an good look of the group of students he had in front of them. '' Hello everyone and welcome back to another year of Defence Against the Dark Arts.'' He was sure the students could tell by now that he was an different face than previous year. So he would explain and introduce himself for them. ''For the ones who forgot. My name is Noel Waldgrave. And I’m your professor for Defence Against the Dark arts for the upcoming years.'' He than explained making sure he watched the students in the eye. He didn’t had to go through the rules, since it must be clear by now for the second years, and they knew the fundamental basics of the Dark Arts.

He than walked towards the middle of the classroom and continued. '' In this semester we will talk about a variety of prank-like curses and jinxes. Like the Jelly-Leg Curse and the Trip Jinx, for example. In addition to that, we will also be handling the counter-spells for these prank-like curses and jinxes.'' He than saw some exciting faces but some seemed to be hoping for more than talking. '' And ofcourse that means that you will be practising these in class yourselves.'' He than said and gave an small playful wink as suddenly some seemed to be very excited and smiled. He than paused and walked back to the front to stand there. He than turned to the blackboard behind him and looked back to the class for an moment. '' I will be using the blackboard behind me to write things down. I would advise you to write along with me.'' He paused an moment to let the people who hadn’t already take their stuff could do that now. He than turned around to the class. '' So, who can tell me the definition of a curse or a jinx?'' He than asked while looking around. And pointed at an person close. And smiled and nodded approvingly as the student answered. ''Very well.'' He said and gave them a smile. And turned towards the blackboard to write the good definition down. Than moved on turning to the class again. ''And who can tell me the difference between a jinx and a curse?'' He than asked, choosing an different student in the back to answer. And than gave an friendly smile as they gave their answer. '' That’s right, good job.'' He than replied. Satisfied with it he writed it down on the blackboard. And looked at the students to see when he could continue.

He than let the blackboard for what it was for now and leaned at his desk. '' Next week we will practice our first jinx.'' He than dropped and knew they would be excited, most of them than at least. He would let them know next week that he didn’t want fooling around. For now he let them be excited. As he looked at the time, he figured it was time to close it off. '' The time is almost up. For homework, I want everyone to write down the names of three jinxes and three curses, and write down the effects of each jinx and curse. It has to be turned in before the start of next week’s class.'' He told them and made sure that, that messenge was clear. He than gave them an friendly smile and went sitting down at his desk. And dismissed the class, to return to the first years homework.

Please review the DADA Class Policy for first through fourth years.

Roleplay the lesson. As stated above, complete the assignment for extra credit:
- List three jinxes and the effects of each
- List three curses and the effects of each

The first two students to answer Professor Waldgrave’s questions will also receive extra credit. Only one question for one student please.

Felix wasn't sure he was ready for classes to begin, but then again he wasn't sure he ever would be. Taking a seat in the first Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson of the year, he'd heard from some of his classmates about what to expect from Professor Waldgrave's classes this year. "Can we practice the spell on you sir?" Felix called out. If the professor was going to let them practice the spells in class then it was only fair they could also practice them on the person with the most experience. Surely Professor Waldgrave wouldn't take issue with that. Making some notes on the types of jinxes and curses they'd be using throughout the semester, Felix couldn't help but wonder when they'd actually get to use them in a real life situation. Not during the dueling tournament, but out in public. In the wild. "Isn't a curse something that isn't done for fun? It's meant to give the spell caster an advantage?" Honestly Felix wasn't a reader, but that sounded right. Felix wasn't sure all jinx's were fun either, but a curse's intent was to hurt, wasn't it? At the end of the lesson Felix packed up his things and lurked outside the classroom for whichever of his friends wanted to walk with him to the next lesson.

Jasper’s last grade card had been a whole lot of P's and he knew he had to turn things around, at least enough to scrape A grades or ideally E's to keep his parents off his back over the next break. With that in mind he arrived at Defence Against the Dark Arts ready to focus. That focus lasted until Felix asked if they could practice the spells on Professor Waldgrave. Jasper snorted a laugh and no longer focused on the lesson. He tried his best to get that focus back and follow along until the lesson ended and the class were dismissed.

Rose was invariably on the side of her siblings in regards to the Defence Against the Dark Arts professor, but she wasn’t really all that bothered about it either. As she entered the classroom, she noticed first her sister and then Amory and took a second of hesitation to head over towards Amory before Sayuri quickly pulled her into the seat beside her. She quickly waved at Amory in apology before trying to at least pay a little attention to whatever the professor was going on about. She laughed into her hand when Felix asked if they could practice spells on the professor, honestly genuinely a question she was sure they all had at this point. She didn’t bother to answer any of the questions, just taking a couple of notes lightly instead because she wasn’t really that interested. When the lesson finally wrapped up, she scribbled down the homework and waited for Amory to head out alongside her.

Amory walked into the classroom meaning to perhaps sit with Rose but her sister stole her away, fair enough. Instead Amory found his way to sit next to Felix, who was also in the top two Gryffindors list, so it was as good a option as any. As the lesson began most of it was a blur, it's not that he didn't listen he did, well sort of. When Felix made a suggestion and there were a few reactions heard around the room Amory looked sideways to the boy, he had a fair point. "You know that sounds like a great idea. Wouldn't that be sort of fair?" Or perhaps they were the professors own personal guinea pigs or circus monkeys, who knows. Last year it had included demonstrations the Professor himself did on the students, perhaps this year too. Rest of the lesson Amory just listened, keeping his opinions to himself, not really bothering answering any questions. As the lesson concluded Amory strode his way towards Rose who was patiently waiting for him, it was sort of a nice feeling. Having someone wait to exit a class with him, as silly and small of a thing as it might have seemed.

Winnie walked into the defence against the dark arts classroom and took her usual spot in the room. She looked at the professor and smiled at him, nodding as he re-introduced himself to them, but she knew it was silly, people should not have such terrible memory than that. Winnie took her quill and began writing down what they’d be covering within this semester. She made sure to get down what was being said and then raised her hand at the question the professor asked, but in neither occasion she was picked to answer, which was frustrating. She took a note of the homework and then headed out of the classroom.

Tori didn’t like Professor Waldgrave and every time he opened his mouth she felt like he was scaring her more. She always had a nightmare at night whenever she went to his classes, last semester had been a nice reprieve. She kept her quill poised as she waited for the class to continue as the professor talked about what they would be studying this semester. She was eager to try out some of the jinxes they would be learning, though the counter-spells felt like they would be more prudent. She put her hand up to answer the question, but Felix got there first and she grinned at him, writing his answer down. His comment about hitting the professor with spells was kind of funny, but she tried not to laugh at it. When the professor asked a second question, her hand went up again, and this time she answered. “A jinx is mild, it’s more for inconvenience, but a curse is more powerful and usually causes more harm or suffering.” She wondered if Professor Cade would agree with that. Soon the class was dismissed and she quickly packed up all of her things, she’d spoken to Professor Cade about what she was going to do next year, and she was prepared to do it, now they would just need to see how things went.
Jinxes:
  1. The Jelly-Legs Jinx – Makes the target’s legs shake uncontrollably, making it difficult to walk or stand.
  2. The Trip Jinx – Causes the target to stumble and fall.
  3. The Tongue-Tying Jinx – Prevents the target from speaking clearly, often making them jumble their words.
Curses:
  1. The Bat-Bogey Hex – Enlarges the target’s bogies and makes them attack their face.
  2. The Full Body-Bind Curse – Temporarily paralyzes the target’s entire body.
  3. The Curse of the Bogies – Causes an uncontrollable runny nose, sometimes paired with sneezing.

Sayuri entered Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom and spotted Rose. Her eyes narrowed as her sister made a move to walk towards Raven, so Sayuri took it upon herself to pull Rose to her side. She'd heard from Eli all about this class, and while it was annoying that Rose would rather sit with Raven, this was one class she would not allow it to happen. Especially since Rose nearly volunteered for a spell demonstration last year. Sayuri was not going to allow that. The class focusing on prank-like curses and jinxes was going to be annoying because the number of students casting spells at one another - prank spells - definitely spelled disaster. She was still annoyed as to why they couldn't make use of the training dummies rather than flinging spells at one another. Of course, one of the Gryffindors had the idea of flinging spells at the professor as well, and honestly, Sayuri agreed. It would be severely disappointing if the professor wouldn't be able to block off spells, and besides, he would be better off canceling effects of spells on himself than on twelve-year-olds. As the lesson wrapped up, Sayuri took note of anything that she needed to do for the class before gathering her things and leaving the classroom after her sister had already left.

School seemed to be going fine for the Gryffindor. Asher Styx-Potter was now a second year, and entering a whole new term. Next time though, another year, they would be combined versus this whole house separation. At least no matter what, he would be seated near or with his sisters. Or cousins. He got ready in his dorm, putting on his Gryffindor robes quickly. His hair was combed and neat. As neat as one could get it. He wondered how some of the Potters ended up blonde. He and a few of his siblings were blonde. Asher looked in the mirror at his hair and wondered if his hair would darken over the next couple of years. It was possible. He dismissed the thought and hurried out of the Gryffindor house to go to class.

Asher walked in the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom and sat down next to one of his sisters. Professor Waldgrave started the lesson with a greeting, but more or less how they would be focusing on prank spells. Jinxes and hexes. It seemed like a childish semester to him. Asher did not really appreciate things like that. He was definitely not a Weasley, it seemed. And that was it. He wrote down the homework and left the classroom for the day.

The blonde was very much ready to be among the prettiest girls in the classroom. Imogen Styx-Cade felt that she had everything she ever needed. She needed good grades to do well in her life after she left here. Imogen knew that her name would only carry her so far. The rest she would have to do on her own. The Slytherin girl brushed her hair once more, and grabbed her backpack. She left the Slytherin house to head out to continue her day. Imogen walked in the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom and sat down in her seat next to one of her siblings. She liked sitting next to them, especially Esme. And this class she actually had with her. Professor Waldgrave started the lesson up with how this year, they were going to be learning about prank jinxes. Imogen wrinkled her nose at the very thought of it. She copied down what was on the blackboard as well as some of the opinions of others. She then copied down the homework, and left to go work on it. It seemed like easy enough work.

William had almost forgotten Professor Waldgrave since the man was so unremarkable and unimpressive, the only reason he hadn’t forgotten him is because Uncle James liked to grumble about his subject partner often enough that William had caught a couple of his rants, it was quite funny to see his uncle get so passionate about another person and not in a good way. William sat and forced himself to listen to the professor talk about jinxes and curses, he laughed when Felix suggested casting a jinx on him. Why not? Waldgrave had no problem casting spells on them after all. A couple of students gave their opinions on what the difference was between a jinx and a curse but William didn’t say anything. Once the lesson was over he grabbed the notes he had made then made his way out of the classroom.

The Slytherin knew that today was not going to be an enjoyable day. Ravage Zhefarovich had everything ready in his room and in his bag. He just needed to get up and go to the classroom that he needed to go to that day. He was just waiting for the moment so that he would not be too early, and he would not be too late either. He liked being on time. Never tardy. The last thing he wanted was a letter to his parents. Ravage did not want to deal with that drama. He was sure that his older twin brothers brought them enough pain on their own. Ravage checked the time once more, and decided that it was now or never. He grabbed his bag and left the Slytherin house to head on to his lesson.

Ravage walked in the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom and sat down in his spot. Professor Waldgrave greeted the second years and let the second years know that they would be focusing on prank-like curses and jinxes. Ravage thought about it, and knew that this would be fun. He could use a few of these on those that he did not like. The message was not lost on his ears, and then the homework was assigned. He got up and left once he had written down the assignment.

Kanako liked this class but at the same time, classes were boring. She took a seat way at the back and listened with the visage of something who appeared patient, but who ultimately wasn't. Jinxes and curses were interesting but when did they get to actually do any? She took some sparse notes as the lesson continued and once it was over, left.
