“And so we come to one of the most…shall we say, divisive figures this semester,” Trina started almost immediately, expecting that the students knew by now that they would have to be taking notes. “Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore. I dare say some of you will have heard of him, at least in passing.” Trina waited for some noises of assent, before continuing.
“Albus Dumbledore was born in 1881. He attended Hogwarts, where he was sorted into Gryffindor, eventually becoming Head Boy. He was, like Merlin, quite the exceptional wizard - especially when it came to Transfiguration, a subject he eventually taught at the school before becoming Headmaster, a position he held for a few decades before his death in 1997. That’s at the age of 115, if you need a little help on the math.” Trina gave a small smirk, before continuing. “In fact, he was awarded for both his study of alchemy and for his spellcasting, discovered several ways to use dragon’s blood, was a representative on the British Wizengamot, and awarded the Order of Merlin - see, it’s all coming together, isn’t it?” she joked, giving them a moment to catch up.
“The controversy comes in after his school years, where he was allegedly tied to Gellert Grindelwald. Now, there’s no proof that he was an accessory to any of Grindelwald’s crimes, of course, but the suggestion of them being associated, or possibly even more, has been whispered about for a long time. Nonetheless, he claimed victory in a famous duel in 1945, and Grindelwald was imprisoned.”
Trina stretched, before continuing. “And considering the string of issues that plagued Hogwarts in the 1990s, there were many that called for Dumbledore’s resignation, believing him to be unfit to be Headmaster of Hogwarts. His Ministry titles were stripped, although he was able to stay on at the school - with Ministry of Magic intervention. Unfortunately, this did not prevent the rise of Voldemort impacting Hogwarts, and Albus Dumbledore was killed at Hogwarts in June of 1997.” Trina gave an almost sombre look, hoping that that didn’t distress the students too much. “He was buried on the Hogwarts grounds for his service to the school, the only Headmaster to have earned that honour, and his portrait still hangs at the original Hogwarts to this day.”
“Alright, I won’t bog you down with any more information for the day. Remember your assignments - if you’re struggling to find inspiration, speak now, or forever hold your peace. Otherwise, enjoy your afternoon!”
