Second Years, Lesson Five

FIFTH LESSON
Noel sat on the edge of his desk while he waited for the students to enter the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom. He welcomed the second years as soon as they entered with an friendly smile. Today they would discuss the last couple of prank-like jinxes. These jinxes were pretty advanced for second-year students, and he did not expect them to master them until they were in their third year. So it was just a little wait for them. Once he was sure that every student was inside, he closed the classroom door with a flick of his wand and turned his attention back to the students. '' Hello everyone.'' Noel greeted them. '' Today we are going to learn about four more prank-like jinxes, so let's get right into it.'' He than watched over to some who already had taken out writing essentials. And gave one an smile. '' I would advice you to take some notes.'' He than told them as his brown friendly eyes went through the room. Noel appreciated students who took the effort in their studies, and he would help out to motivate them. He pointed his wand towards the blackboard and made writing appear on it with a wave of his wand.

Lesson Four
  • Antler Jinx - Grows antlers on the head of the target
  • Leek Jinx - Leeks sprout from the ears of the target
  • Bat-Bogey Hex - Transforms the target's bogeys into bats that fly out of the victim's nose
  • Stinging Jinx - Effects similar to suffering from an allergic reaction

''The first spell on the list is the Antler Jinx. This jinx is an excellent example of what a prank-like jinx is supposed to be. It grows antlers on the head of the target, which makes this a great prank jinx. While it seems and looks innocent, I feel like should mention that it's not that easy to remove the antlers from someone's head. A day of classes may have to be missed to remove them.'' Noel figured not everyone would mind that, but hopefully they wanted to join his class at least and like what they were learning. ''The second spell on the list is the Leek Jinx. Now, this jinx is as innocent as it sounds, as it sprouts leeks from the ears of the target. It can come in handy as a distraction but also as a way to temporarily keep someone from overhearing something. It's quite easily fixed, a simple General Counter-Spell will reverse the effect of the Leek Jinx immediately.'' He paused for a moment, giving his students enough time to write everything down.

He than continued as he saw he could. ''The third spell is the Bat-Bogey Hex, a good hex to overpower your enemies or to simply keep people at a distance. It can be fatal when performed on non-human targets, so think before you cast this particular hex. There have been cases in which the Wizengamot has had to punish witches and wizards for using the Bat-Bogey Hex on non-human targets.'' Noel than told them, he hoped no one would ever be so cruel, so this messenge needed to be clear. '' And lastly, the Stinging Jinx. I'll admit that I'm not quite sure why this one counts as a prank-like jinx, as the effects of the Stinging Jinx are all but funny. When hit with this jinx, your skin will get tight, swollen and puffy, similar to that of someone suffering from an allergic reaction. Welts might also appear on the skin, which seriously makes me question the 'prank-like' nature of this spell.'' He told them. But Noel wasn't the biggest fan of jinxes either way. Once he had discussed all the jinxes on the blackboard behind him, he made sure sure to go over the incantations and hand movements with the students. Most of these jinxes were harmless and could genuinely be seen as prank-like jinxes, but he wasn't so sure about the last one. He could only hope that his students were smart enough to only ever use the Stinging Jinx in dire situations, as the effects of the jinx were quite painful. ''Keep in mind that, while you may attempt to cast these jinxes, I do not expect you to master them this year.'' Noel added to it. Perhaps it might have seen like it had, but that's why they need to keep their notes of this lesson for in the future years. '' I wouldn't be surprised if most of you will have trouble getting the incantations and hand movements right until you're in your third or fourth year...'' He told them, not in a way to demotivate them but just stating realistic facts. He than looked at the time and smiled to them. '' That was it for this week's Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson, though. Feel free to stay if you have a question about any of these jinxes. If not, I bid all of you a great day and I will see you next week!'' And he walked back to his desk and sat behind it in case students needed him.

Roleplay the lesson. If your character is going to attempt these jinxes outside of class, please keep the Acceptable Spells & Potions (By Year) list in mind. Your second-year character shouldn’t be able to cast any of these jinxes, but could possibly master the Antler and Leek jinxes in third year.

Tori scribbled her notes quickly, since this was a lecture and that meant a lot of talking because Waldgrave was always talking. She made notes under her notes for the different jinxes they were talking about today - she was sure Eoghan would be so proud for how seriously she was taking this. Most of the jinxes seemed like they would be more humiliating than harmful, but that didn’t mean she was too keen on using them on her friends. The antler jinx… maybe, because it seemed like it would be fun because who wouldn’t want antlers though? The stinging jinx definitely seemed the most cruel to her. When the lesson came to an end, she gathered everything quickly not wanting to spend a moment longer in the room with that man than she had to. He’s one person she wasn’t going to miss next year.

Winnie walked into the defence against the dark arts classroom and took her spot in the room. She looked up at the board as the professor then told them what they’d be doing. She wrote down all of the spells which appeared on the board. She then added what the professor then said about them, making sure that she wasn’t missing anything. She didn’t want to not have the explanations of the spells when it was so close to the exam. THey didn’t have the time to actually do the spells, but winnie knew she could go to the duelling area and practice the spells there.

If Sayuri had any patience left for Waldgrave, she would have thought him silly for the lecture-style class near the end of the year. As it was, she just thought him stupid. After a semester of him casting spells on them and having them cast spells on each other, now he decides to stick with stupid theory? Not that Sayuri hated theory-based classes. In fact, she liked them. She just disliked the professor right now really. Not to mention that most of the spells he was currently discussing weren't even particularly... defensive. Sure, a dark wizard comes chasing her and woo, she casts a leek jinx! Poor evil wizard would now have leeks out of their ears and what would you know! They still have working feet. And hands with wands. Stupid spells. And antler jinx? Really? Now in what world would that even be a defensive spell. Maybe if she cast it on herself. Did the professor missed the memo that antlers were weapons? Why would she wanna cast it on an opponent? At least the Bat-Bogey Hex could be useful. The Stinging Hex - she wasn't even sure, but with the rate they were going, she didn't even know if she could trust whatever spell list this professor would give. It was all so... stupid. So stupid.

The Gryffindor was getting used to the term going by quickly with what they were learning. It was not too difficult but it was not as boring as the first year. He could handle this very easily. Asher was confident in his abilities - likely because he was a Gryffindor. He had some Slytherin in him, he was sure. His mother sure acted like it. His other mother was a Gryffindor. She acted like it too. Asher was not sure where Adelaide got her Ravenclaw side from though. He dismissed that thought as he gathered his textbooks and equipment and headed out of the Gryffindor house to head to his next class.

Asher walked in the Defence Against the Dark Arts room and settled in. He hoped that whatever they would be learning would not end up biting him on the rear end. Today, Professor Waldgrave decided that he would be going over not one, or two, but four jinxes. He took out his notes and started to write them down and what they did. After writing them down, he noticed that they all pretty much said what they were called. These were too advanced for them, so they would not have to practice it. Good. He got up and left upon dismissal.

The Slytherin girl stared at herself in the mirror to ensure that she looked perfect. Her hair was flawless and showered down her back and shoulders. Imogen knew that she was one to look at. The way she carried herself, her appearance - everything that any boy would love to look at. Imogen was not aware of her vanity, but alas, she might when she got older. Imogen felt that she was the prettiest girl in the school, definitely prettier than veelas. Imogen straightened her tie and grabbed her backpack. She was ready to tackle the day ahead of her. Imogen entered the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom and found her seat. Today, they were learning about four jinxes. They were all too advance for second years, so she did not need to worry about growing leeks or antlers from her head today. The stinging hex was a bit harmful. Once she was done with her notes, she packed up everything and left the classroom.

It was getting close to the end of the semester and Ravage Zhefarovich felt that some might be a little stressed from it. It was hard to stress someone like Ravage about. He had twin older brothers by the names Horror and Terror. There was very little that someone could do to stress him. Or even bring him any amount of agitation. Sure, there were certain types of girls that did annoy him to some degree, but that was rare too. Ravage was having a decent time at school. It was worth coming here to learn at the same institute as his parents, under the same house as his dear mother. He noticed what time it was, and grabbed his bag to head out to endure another lesson that he might be bored in.

Ravage walked in the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom and sat down once more in his seat. The semester was almost over, and Ravage thought that this was better than the previous year. Professor Waldgrave started the lecture with how they would be learning four more jinxes. These were too advanced for the second years, but they had to go over them apparently. He wrote them down and their effects. He doubted that he would try them until next year. He didn't want to attempt any until he was sure that he would master them quickly. He got up and left the classroom.

Kanako found the lessons without spellwork to be a drag, really. And the spells they were learning they couldn't even cast yet, unless they were especially talented or something? It seemed faintly ridiculous. Kanako took a few notes anyway, knowing that it might be on the exam (and she was honestly feeling the pressure from her dad to get better grades). Once the lesson wrapped up, Kanako packed away her things and went on her way.

William was prepared to volunteer again to save anyone else from doing so, but as they began their latest defence against the dark arts lesson it became clear that the lesson would be different. Professor Waldgrave explained they would be learning four spells and that they would be best taking notes. William was relieved as he didn’t really want to have another spell cast on. He took out a sheet of parchment and made notes on the four spells as they went through them, the Antler, Leek and Stinging jinxes and the Bat-Bogey hex. Thank Merlin he wouldn’t have any of those cast on him. When the lesson was over and Professor Waldgrave asked if anyone had any questions William raised his hand, “Professor I’m curious about the stinging jinx, mind if I try it on you?”
