With the school on a break for the end of year. The young teen was happy that the term had come to an end, a little before most of the rest of the magical schools did. The luxury of a private education, but that didn't matter, because he was looking after his neighbours dog, and had been allowed to take the dog with him, on the family's outing to obsidian harbour.. It was the weekend and Shane had been working so hard all semester, the entire family had decided to get ice cream, but since he wasn't feeling up to being particularly social, the boy had asked to take the dog, a beautiful and still very young german shepherd with him. He loved dogs, they were so much fun and he was having a blast with him. On the edge of the town throwing a ball and watching as the dog bounded after it and then would bring it back to him. The school term had been long and boring, and Shane was just looking forward to all of the holiday time he could spend without having to think about his classes, his exams or the future.
He took a sip of the water he'd brought and gave a little to the puppy as it brought the ball back to him. He was friendly with it, scratching it's back and behind the year, telling it positive affirmations. He loved the dog. He wanted a dog badly, but he would never want to impose that upon his current family not with the sort of plans he had in mind, or even just because he spent all of his weeks at school when he wasn't on vacation. So, instead he would just make the most of the time that he had with this very dog. Take every opportunity to play with her as he was doing so now. Shane took the ball gently off the ground and threw it again, watching happily as the dog once again raced off to get it. Oh boy, they did not deserve dogs, and though he knew he would probably benefit from spending time with his sister and his family, he needed this time alone. To gather his thoughts and let himself just process the last semester and the end of another year in a school where no one liked him and where he felt like an outsider. But he couldn't complain, he shouldn't, it was one of the best educations he could get, his aunt and uncle were forking out for it, and he was being likely ungrateful. Shane ignored those thoughts and just focused on the puppy. The puppy should get all his attention.

In all her life, Seren could not remember ever venturing somewhere she had not been before. Her life was simple, remote and the furthest she ever travelled from home was to visit relatives she had met times before. Her discovery of magic was a new record, taking her further than she had ever been, to a place where everything was out of this world, new, and extremely exciting. She couldn't believe how lucky she was to be in a place like Obsidian Harbour and wanted to explore it whilst she had the chance.

On this visit Seren chose to investigate the outskirts of the harbour town. She found it to be quiet until she stumbled upon a young boy playing with a puppy. Seren's smile widened and she cooed at the sight. She approached the boy with his dog and spoke once close enough for her to be heard. "That is the cutest little puppy I have ever seen! Can I pet them?" She asked, crouching in front of the dog and holding out her hand for him to sniff. It would probably be able to pick up the scent of her own dogs as they had such good noses.

Shane smiled as the dog raced back towards him, and he smiled as a girl, a little younger than him was suddenly next to him, he’d been a little preoccupied watching the dog that he hadn’t noticed her getting close and watched as she spoke and then reached out to let the dog sniff at her hand so that she could pet it. He was a little more tentative than the dog was. He didn’t interact much with people outside of school, so he was certainly nervous about talking to her now. The boy wasn’t sure if she wanted to take his dog or if it was all just a little harmless. He put on a smile as she was crouching and crouched down with her, ”You can pet her if she lets you,” Shane replied with friendly tone. He wouldn’t force the puppy to spend time with her if the dog didn’t want to. He reached out and took from her the thing he’d been throwing with her. ”You like dogs?” the boy asked the girl, making light conversation, ”You want to throw this?” he offered the thing to her and continue to smile softly, he was a little tentative about it, this wasn’t his dog, but he was sure she would still listen to him even if someone else did throw it.

Seren trusted the boys words and stroked the puppy. "Thanks, what's her name?" The puppy was so soft and fluffy, Seren giggled as the animal tried to lick her face. Seren looked up at the boy smiling, "Oh yes, I love all animals. We have a Jack Russell at home." She explained, standing up straight to take the ball he offered. "Okay, but to warn you, I'm not a very good thrower." She confessed with a smile.

Seren waved the ball in front of the dog to get her attention then threw it a little over three metres. The dog bounded after it nonetheless. She giggled, looking at the boy, "You must love having a puppy. Do you live around here as well?"

The boy smiled carefully watching the girl interact with the puppy in front of them, "Her name's Puds," the boy thought it was a dumb name for the dog but he wasn't going to say anything about that. The boy just nodded along with what she was saying. He trusted her a little more knowing that she had a dog at him, "What it's name?" he asked politely as she threw the ball away from him. It wasn't a particularly good throw but he appreciated that she was trying anyway and the puppy couldn't care much about it. When it bounded back he shook his head, "She's not my dog, but she's beautiful and like helping take care of her," the boy replied, "Not overly far from here, you?" Shane returned the question, even if he wasn't entirely telling the truth about where he was living those days. He didn't trust the girl, he didn't know her well enough at all.
