Rose thought there was some debate about such things as going to balls with someone versus going to a ball alone and she'd never really thought about it until this moment. When she'd had Amory, she'd been able to - in essence - hide behind him for a lot of the social stuff that was generally required of someone who went to a ball. Now of course, they weren't attending events together, he hadn't asked her, and she hadn't asked him and that was where the situation sat. She supposed she'd enjoyed it whilst she'd had it and though she was sad to see it ended, she supposed it had been inevitable, as most things were. She'd never been allowed to enjoy nice things for very long, you see, and so she'd rather resigned herself to the knowledge that she would probably never be allowed to enjoy nice things ever. Still, it wasn't like she'd lost a limb, regardless of how upset about the situation she was - not that she would ever tell. She believed that they were still friends... or something to that effect, but it certainly wasn't the same, and when she saw him at the dance alone she couldn't help but to wonder why he hadn't just asked her then, if he hadn't intended on asking someone else. She supposed he'd gotten sick of having to carry most of the conversations between them. Still, she didn't harbour ill feelings towards him, nor would she, despite the upset she felt - it was just how things were, and now, since she had gotten use to this ritual and it had somehow become a part of her life now, she'd attended just because she had been doing so before. It sucked, but it was what it was she supposed.

Esme had avoided the Yule ball ever since things had officially ended with Felix. It wasn't that she had been pining for her fellow Gryffindor since their 'breakup' but she had no interest in watching her sort of ex make his way through the female population of their year, or the year below apparently. But Esme had long decided that she didn't care what he was up to and didn't want to miss out on anything because other people. She decided to be daring with her hair and dress and headed down to the Great hall. Esme felt a little self conscious as she walked through the great hall, picking a drink up as she walked past the refreshments table. She looked a lot different to her usual style and wasn't sure how people would react to it, assuming anyone actually cared. Sometimes she worried she kept such a low profile at the school that no one knew who she was anymore. She felt like she'd lost the people she'd been closest to in her first couple of years at school.

The first person she spotted who was familiar to her was Rose, one of the few friends she still had. She finished off her drink and made her way over to her. "Rose! I love your dress,"
