Oskar did not grow up in a warm and friendly home but despite this his has always been a soft and gentle boy. To avoid the tension and ridicule at home he likes to spend time outside and recite old stories of mythology and wizard folklore to the trees as his captive audience. Even though his family does not deserve it he does feel loyal to them and has a desire to live up to their expectations at whatever cost. This has made him quiet manipulative when it comes to others and has learned to lull people into trusting to learn things about them or staying silent to blend in so he can overhear what's being said around him. He doesn't get any joy from it but he can't deny the security it's brought him in the past. Now he is learning how to socialize from scratch as he distances himself from his family and old school.

Oskar is the youngest child of his father and the only child of his mother. His father was married a few times before he met Oskar's mother Sigrid while both enjoying a night out in Stockholm. She was quickly won over by Josef despite their age difference and the fact he had other children. A year of whirlwind romance later they were married with their son on the way. Even from a young age his older siblings were not always kind to Oskar and his mother, who was much younger than their father. They teased him a lot growing up and would pull cruel pranks all the time. He spent his entire childhood in a large family home in remote Sweden being raised by his paternal grandmother who resembled the kind of evil witches from muggle fairy tales.
When it came to start school there was no question that he would attend Durmstrang like his father had and the rest of his family. Growing up Oskar had trouble keeping up with his more ruthless family members but it did give him an advantage when it came to school. He had learned his best qualities were blending in and appearing harmless. As Oskar started to grow into himself at school his mother on the other hand was starting to see how his family and school were influencing and change him from a gentle boy to something much crueler. She decided quickly to take a chance and save him from going down that path, so she left his father practically overnight. Josef was away on business and in a matter of days she packed up their things and moved them as far as they could to New Zealand. Oskar doesn't fully understand why they had to move or why his parents split. His mother is hoping that a fresh start will be good for him.
