Not So Scary

He hadn't put much effort into his costume this year because he had totally forgotten about the Halloween feast. Thaddeus had been so busy with school, football, and playing the drums lately that it must have slipped his mind to ask his mom if she could help him find something cool for this year, as she was most likely the one to pay for his costume. Instead, the Gryffindor pulled one of his old hats out of his trunk, it was a huge difference from what he would usually wear at these feasts but he thought that it was better than showing up without one. While Thaddeus walked down to the great hall he wondered if he would see his best friend here tonight. He hadn't spoken much to her as he was still avoiding her a little bit even though he told her last year that he wouldn't do that anymore, he was just delaying a certain topic from happening anytime soon. He smiled, as always the hall looked absolutely amazing and a part of him wished it would stay like this for the rest of the school year because this made the great hall much more interesting. After taking it all in, the boy walked towards the food table to stuff his mouth full of sweets, which was no doubt the part of the feast he was looking forward to the most.

Clementine was so excited for this year's Halloween fest because she and Anthony had coordinated their costumes together so they could go as a couple. She felt like it had made the whole experience so much more fun. She had almost come as a werewolf because it would be a funny nod to her Little Red Riding Hood costume she wore the year before, but this was so much better. She was dressed as Alice from Alice in Wonderland in a blue dress and had her hair neatly made with a headband, making sure the heart locket rested gently between the white lapels of her dress. She couldn't wait to get to the great hall. Once they entered Clementine allowed Anthony to go catch up with his friends for a bit as she made her way to the snacks table. She was going to grab them some drinks and head back to hang out with them as she had last Halloween, but then she spotted her best friend nearby. "Teddy!" she said happily, going over to him. She put down the two cups she had in her hands on the table beside them and reached out to hug him quickly. "How are you?" she asked, smiling brightly at him. She was a little sad because they had still not hung out as much as before even after he said they'd make more of an effort, but now Clementine knew it was partly her fault too because she had not been ready to mix the two boys in her life together yet. "Nice costume," she said with a small giggle.

He turned to look around when he heard his name and smiled at Clementine, his mouth still full of sweets. He swallowed them quickly as she approached and hugged him and said, ''A little busy with stuff but good nonetheless.'' it was a half truth but he figured she didn't have to know the other reason why the two of them hadn't done much together. He smiled again when she complimented him on his costume. ''Thanks! It took me forever to come up with it.'' Thaddeus said jokingly. It was unfortunate that he had forgotten about Halloween because he had a really good costume idea at the start of the year but figured that he could save that one for next year. ''You too, blue looks good on you,'' he told her before shoving more sweets into his mouth

"Busy with what?" Clementine asked politely, interested in what her friend was up to. Then it occurred to her that maybe Teddy might have a girlfriend by now, just the way she'd gotten a boyfriend. She figured someone as great as Teddy would be able to get any girl he wanted so the idea of a girlfriend wasn't far fetched to her. But thinking about that made her feel conflicted somehow so she decided not to dwell on that for now. She laughed at his joke about his costume but replied, "Well I like it, it's cute!" She looked down at the dress she was wearing as the Gryffindor complimented her and Clementine smiled. "Thanks! I'm Alice from Alice in Wonderland," she said in case it wasn't obvious. Then she hesitated before she added, "Anthony is dressed as the Mad Hatter, and we're hoping to win the best couple costume contest!" She never really mentioned her boyfriend around him and instead of tip-toeing around the subject she just decided to rip the bandaid off in a way.

''Oh, you know, the usual stuff,'' he said. ''Football, drumming, homework.'' Even though he had figured out what he wanted to do when he was older last year, the dream of one day becoming a famous football player had not left his mind yet. Thaddeus smiled when she told him who she was but he really didn't care about that at all, the only thing he cared about was how lovely she looked in her blue dress and how badly he wanted to tell her that. He grimaced slightly at the mention of Anthony and nodded his head when she told him that they were hoping to win the couple contest. ''Well, good luck with that. I've seen some really awesome couple costumes out there.'' the Gryffindor said. He hoped that things would have gone south when he noticed that Anthony hadn't sent Clementine a rose for Valentine's Day but no, they were still together and he still wasn't ok with it.

Clementined nodded politely when he listed what he had been up to and replied, "That sounds fun!" She remembered running into Teddy drumming last year and figured he must really like to do it so she decided to ask about it. "Maybe I can see you play some time?" The last time she had walked in on him on the drums they had spent most of the time talking so he hadn't played anything. Clementine frowned slightly when Teddy wished them luck on winning the contest, and then pointed out that he'd seen other awesome costumes. It sounded a lot like he was hoping they wouldn't win. "Oh, well thanks," Clementine said in a small voice, unsure what to say. She didn't want Teddy not to like Anthony or vice versa so she knew she couldn't give up just yet. "You should get to know him, he's really nice" Clementine said, clearing her throat and trying to sound confident in the idea. "Then we can all hang out together more," she added, smiling encouragingly at Teddy, hoping this idea would sound good enough for him to try.
