Name Meanings:
Miyako: "beautiful" + "night" + "child". The "ko" part of her name was never officially registered on her English birth certificate, as her mother believed it was too old-fashioned, but she is still called Miyako when visiting Japan.
Stardust: Literally, stardust. Her mother chose it.
Bell: Derived from the Old French bel, meaning "beautiful" or "fair".
Mori: - Japanese for "forest"
Hoshino: Japanese name using the characters 星野, meaning "star field"
Opinions on Name: Miya likes that her English name is small and not overly complicated, although does find it funny that her first and last names both contain the meaning of "beautiful". She has mixed feelings over her middle name, but likes it as a nickname. Unfortunately, nobody calls her Stardust because she doesn't tell people her middle name and nobody has asked.

Appearance

Race/Ethnicity: Biracial, half Japanese and European.
Hair: Miya's natural hair colour is a dark brown that looks almost black and her hair falls to her chest. She has a fringe that sometimes obscured her eyes somewhat when she doesn't cut it. She intentionally lets her hair grow out this way, as she likes to hide behind it.
Eyes: Dark brown, almost the same shade as her hair. Her eyes are very large and appear to give her a perpetual "deer in the headlights" look.
Skin: Miya is very pale, mostly due to her hatred of the sun. She avoids the sun at all costs and has never had a tan because of it.
Height: Small for her age. Combined with her other features, Miya can be easily mistaken for several years younger than she really is.
Style: Miya has a fondness for fluffy sweatshirts and anything floral. A lot of of her wardrobe consists of hand-me-downs from her mother. Most of her clothing is much too big for her, and some of her sweaters have holes in the sleeves from Miya chewing them.
Other Distinguishing Features: Miya is easily recognised by her constantly terrified expression, oversized clothing, as well as her habit of accumulating foliage in her hair.

A Little Deeper

Personality: Miya was always shy as a child, but her natural shyness has morphed into a quiet and dreamy nature. She always tries to see in the best in people and tells herself that nobody is entirely bad. She can seem very naive, and is always willing to give somebody a second chance. And a third. And probably a fourth. Miya is a sweetheart, even if she's sometimes too shy to show it. She wants everybody to be happy and wouldn't intentionally hurt anyone. She wants to help in any way she can.

Her feelings can be hurt easily and Miya tends to be over-emotional and very sensitive to what people think of her. She doesn't like to show it - especially if her being upset would annoy or inconvenience others. With Miya being nervous about everything, it is surprising that she is able to remain calm in a crisis. People terrify her. The ticking of clocks make her concerned, and every animal may be a secret animagus spying on her. She becomes alarmingly serene when she's actually in danger. Miya thinks that she's gone so far beyond scared that she's gone full circle and become calm.

Hobbies:
Gardening - Miya likes to think that flowers are her friends, knowing full well how ridiculous that sounds. Other non-floral plants are nice too.
Astronomy - Inherited a love of the stars from both her parents. She adores the sky and wishes she could visit the moon. Miya is very interested in the concept of magic-enhanced space travel.
Music - She can play the piano and ocarina, and the latter is her favourite. Having a small instrument that could travel with her was very useful when Miya was younger, as she had to move between parents quite frequently. She likes to sing also, but never in front of people.
Candy - Miya considers her love of sweets a hobby because of the amount of time and effort she expends into trying new types of candy. She has a huge sugar tooth and is very rarely without sweets in her pockets.

Quirks:
Short sentences? Ending in question marks? - If a sentence is longer than a couple of words, Miya gets too shy and has to pause. Most of what she says sounds like she's asking a question even if she isn't. She doesn't have as much of a problem with this when she's talking on air.
Clothing chewing - A habit she never grew out of, Miya chews on the ends of her sleeves very frequently. A lot of her clothes have patches on the sleeves. She chews those too.
Germophobe - Her hands are more often than not cracked and dry from washing them too much. Her fear of dirt conflicts with her love of gardening, and she always tries to carry hand sanitizer with he
Watching from the rafters - Miya wouldn't openly admit she spies on people, but that is what she spends most of her time doing. She looks out for gossip or interesting information about other students and has her own collection of secrets - none of which she will share.

Skills:
Bilingual - Miya is fluent in both English and Japanese. Her sentence structure in either language are so terrible that both languages are often assumed to be her second language. She can understand either fine as long as the speaker doesn't talk too fast.
Sneaky - Possibly because of her small stature, Miya is very good at being undetected. Whether she will use this skill for good or evil is yet to be determined.
Good Liar - Miya doesn't like to make a habit of lying, but she can be exceptionally good at it because of this. She is more likely to tell a misleading version of the truth than flat-out making up a story, but convincing her she should lie in the first place can be difficult. She always looks nervous, so it's difficult to tell a lie by her body language.
Non-threatening to small animals - Animals seem to like Miya, and luckily Miya likes them right back. She speaks quietly and moves slowly and small creatures seem to appreciate this.

Weaknesses:
Low self-esteem - Miya does not believe in her own skills at all. She believes she's useless and will destroy everything she touches and that she will never be good at anything.
Speech difficulty - Sometimes Miya appears unintelligent due to her difficulty with articulating her thoughts. This also affects her writing as well and causes difficulty with her studies.
Easily overwhelmed - Lots of things make Miya's head start spinning and she likes to find somewhere quiet to process and recharge. Being around lots of people and noise exhausts her.

Miya's mother, Natasha, owns a small sweet shop. She attended Hogwarts and was sorted into Hufflepuff. Natasha is somewhat eccentric, flaky, and very childlike, and often treats Miya as a younger sister instead of a daughter. She not the most responsible parent in the world, but Miya gets along with her very well. Most of the magic Miya knows was learned from her.

Her father is a "muggle" fisherman and lives with his family in Japan. He used to be a musician while dating Natasha, although broke up with her when Miya was three. He has since married and has two young children, who are Miya's half-siblings. He used to have problems with Miya being a witch, but has changed his stance after hearing Miya began at Hogwarts. He is tolerant of magic, but would prefer that Miya went to a "normal" school and live with him instead of learning magic. When Miya was sixteen, she discovered that her father was not a muggle, and was instead a Squib from a magical family who had been disowned upon showing no magical talent. He changed his surname from "Hoshino" to "Mori" and decided to live as a muggle.

The Hoshino Family own and manage a cherry tree farm in Japan. The wood from the Prunus avium that they grow is used to make wands. As the daughter of a Squib, Miya holds little power in the Hoshino family structure, but is fully considered a member regardless. The Hoshino family has fallen from favour in some circles, due to their historical association with the Dark Arts.

History
Miya was born in 2029, in Hokkaido, Japan. She lived with her mother and father for several years, until she began showing signs of magical ability and indirectly caused her parents to split. Her mother, Natasha, moved to New Zealand with Miya to live with her mother.

Miya's mother started travelling often after the divorce, leaving Miya at home with her grandmother. When Miya was seven years old, she began spending the summer with her father and his new wife in Japan. As it was winter in the northern hemisphere, Miya ended up avoiding most of the summer. She was home-schooled her entire life until she was eleven and accepted into Hogwarts New Zealand. She moved in with her mother on a more permanent basis a few months before going to the school instead of going to Japan like she had done previously. Miya was sorted into Hufflepuff when she arrived at Hogwarts.

Her first year at Hogwarts was marred by her antagonistic relationship with Slytherin student, Twyla Rothery, after an unfortunate misunderstanding about Twyla's cat. Miya's shy personality and social awkwardness made it difficult to make friends with other students, as well as making her fall behind in class when she was too scared to ask for help. The pressure eventually got to much for her, and Miya left Hogwarts in the middle of third year to continue her education by correspondence.

When Miya was sixteen, she accidentally discovered that her father was a Squib and part of the Hoshino wizarding family. She reached out to her relatives in Japan and and officially became part of the Hoshino clan. After she came of age, Miya decided to travel and start her own magical radio station, which she hosts from her van as she wanders around.
