It was Friday night but as Kyle was only eleven and a student at Hogwarts there was nothing like clubbing, girls or drinking for him. He was very much aware of how rich adults spent his life like his parents but they did not go to discotheque or such instead they threw big parties. Kyle did not like such life style and he had not given much thought of how he would be spending his weekend nights when he was an adult. For now he was in search of some food. This young Gryffindor had not been feeling well for the past two days. It was nothing serious just some fever and flu, but that was enough to make his taste buds go on a vacation and he had not felt hungry or liked the taste of anything that he ate. Today however, his temperature had finally returned to normal and all of a sudden Kyle realized just how hungry he felt. He had not eaten anything for the past twenty four hours and his stomach growled as he walked through the corridors.

It was late, almost midnight and way past dinner time. Kyle had never been to the kitchens before but he had heard that they were located somewhere under the Great Hall. He was not scared of meeting prefects of Professors because at the moment he could only think about filling his stomach with some food and only then would he have a good night sleep and be fresh for flying lesson tomorrow morning. As the young gryffindor approached the Great Hall he spotted a passage leading into some sort of basement area only it was no where like a basement. Knowing how interwoven passages were at Hogwarts he was sure it would connect in the dungeons somewhere but now was not the time to go on an adventure stroll.

He walked into the passage area and soon found himself to be in the Kitchens. They resembled the Great Hall very much as it had four long tables but the house banners and all were missing. The smell of food hit his nose and he recognized familiar smell of chicken soup, grilled sandwiches, cheese and dairy products. He wondered who was going to give him food and he hoped that the staff in charge of the kitchens would first feed him before putting him in detention.

Rose was enjoying her time in Hogwarts. It was amazing to think that it was almost Halloween. The first few weeks had gone by so fast. She felt as if she had only entered Hogwarts for the first time yesterday but realistically she had been here for much longer. They were almost finished their first term! Rose was finding it hard to believe. She was almost dreadin going back home. It had been so liberating coming to Hogwarts and now she was returning to her sad house that she hated. She hadn’t been asking Lucie how was her Papa because frankly she didn’t want to know. Not because she didn’t care but she didn’t want to know if he was better because that meant that she was the person who was causing him to stay in his study and not talk to anyone. If he was the same well then they would have to get him better help even if they had to restrain him. She would hate for it to come to that but Rose wanted her Papa to get better and if she was the one causing his pain, she would leave. She wasn’t sure where she would go but she would try and stay away from her Papa for as much as she could. Be totally out of his life so he could move on. It would hurt her, she knew she would never get over it if she had to leave but Rose really loved her Papa and she wanted him to get better.

Rose lay on her bed in the Gryffindor Girl’s Dorm room. She wasn’t sure how many times she hadn’t been able to sleep or woke up during the night. It was very annoying and Rose hoped it would stop soon so she could go back to having nice long nights of sleep. She had a feeling that she would be going home soon was affecting her. She had to admit she was panicking and if she had her way she would stay at school for Hogwarts but she couldn’t leave Lucie. During the night she woke up covered in sweat and she felt a scream about to escape her mouth but she always woke up on time. She could never remember what the dream was about but she had a feeling it was something to do with home and that was worrying her. She would talk to Lucie about it when she got home. She hadn’t known anything about a Halloween feast of Yule Ball so she had sent a letter to Lucie who had promised to by her both outfits. Rose had objected but the day after she had sent her letter two packages arrived for her. She really didn’t know what she would do without Lucie. She was her surrogate mother. She loved both the outfits, the Yule Ball dress especially. She had never had a need to dress up before and she was looking forward to wearing the shoes and dress.

Rose’s ears picked up some movement from outside the door. She listened carefully and she could just make out someone’s footfalls. After a few moments she heard the creak of the portrait opening and closing. Rose wondered who was leaving the tower at such an hour but in her nights of sleeplessness she had often heard people leaving their beds and going off somewhere else in the castle. Usually they were in groups but this person was alone which made her curious but she wasn’t planning on following them. After another fifteen minutes Rose heard her stomach rumbling. She looked down at her stomach and sighed, she knew she would never be able to sleep on a hungry stomach. Quietly she got out of her bed and but on her slippers and hoody She walked down to the common room and quickly checking the corridor she walked out and closed the portrait. Most of the pictures were asleep but some tsked at her and complained about the light from her wand. Rose ignored them only focusing on the growing hunger in her stomach. She had been to the kitchen once or twice before so she walked carefully down the stairs, listening for prefects, teachers or other students. She had her wand mostly covered so it wasn’t noticeable but she could just see where she was putting her feet. Finally she reached the kitchens and walked in. She was surprised to see someone already in the kitchens. He seemed to be waiting for something. Rose wasn’t sure what because you could get the food yourselves. The elves seemed to be up all the times. It was almost cute how they wanted to do everything for you but Rose preferred to do things by herself. That didn’t mean she didn’t ask them for some ingredients. Right now Rose felt like she needed a sandwich of some sort. She should probably make herself known to the boy in front of her. She couldn’t see his face and she hoped he wasn’t a prefect or anything. He was taller then her bt then again most people are. She had an idea though. He obviously hadn’t noticed her yet,she slipped out of her slippers and walked towards him. She was practically silent as her feet made no sound and the kitchen was quite noisy “Boo”She shouted suddenly putting her hands on his shoulders.

As Kyle waited for someone to appear, his mind raced through different thoughts all not very encouraging. The first one was that he was in the wrong room but it did look like a kitchen and then the next thought came which was of Hogwarts having two kitchens. If no one worked in the kitchens at this hour of the night, he would just have to find his way and get some food for himself. Just as the young gryffindor was about to walk and explore the kitchen, he heard a voice and someone placed their hand on his shoulder which nearly gave him a heart attack. Kyle was not one of those who were scared in situations or pranks like these-in fact one of his other Gryffindor had tried similar trick at midnight in the forest but Kyle had not been scared to death on that night-today however his body's immunity system being low made Kyle feel that he was more likely to be attacked. He turned behind hoping that the owner of the hand was not a prefect. It couldn't have been a Professor because the hand was very light on his shoulder.

As Kyle turned and a familiar face was looking back at him, Kyle sighed with relief. The girl with the long brown hair, chocolate brown eyes very much like his own was in his class and in Gryffindor too. Rose Bellard was her name and he had first officially met her at the gryffindor house table one day during breakfast where she had been too sleepy as she had plans of sitting right between Grant Wills and himself and then the girl had apologized in rapid french. Kyle knew French thanks to his father who insisted that he learned other languages other than English because when he took over the business of the broomstick manufacturing company he would have to trade with wizards from everywhere and weak language was not going to get him anywhere. Kyle had learned the language but he had no intentions of running his father's broomstick company but that was for later years in his life. "You gave me goosebumps!" he told her as Kyle could feel the hair on the back of his neck had raised thanks to the near death scare. If he was well fed and in good health, Kyle would probably formulate a plan of giving Rose a good scare on Halloween but that was not the case. After another breath, Kyle calmed down and his mind came back to more sensible things. He knew Rose was not going to turn him in or anything and they were safe.Maybe she even knew about the methods of getting food in the kitchens. Kyle guessed that Rose was hungry too because that was the only sensible reason for being in the kitchens unless she had some secret plan. But as she was just a first year who Kyle thought was friendly and nice he concluded that the first purpose to be true.

The silence of the kitchens was creepy or maybe it was just Kyle's weak immunity thinking that way. He did not want the uncomfortable silence and his stomach did not want to wait any more for some food or he would pass out or something so he asked Rose in his British accent "Do you know how we can get food in here, I'm starving?" Kyle hoped that Rose would not say that as it was late they would have to cook something on their own because for starters Kyle did not know how to cook, not even tea thanks to Patrick Cavanaugh always telling him that such work was for the servants and the other was his being sick issue. Maybe Rose would know how to make something but that would probably take another ten minutes at the very least. Just as Kyle's stomach gave another growl, a small squeaky voice spoke from behind him. "You can tell me what you want, Master and I'll be happy to serve"

Kyle did not have to turn to the speaker to know who it could be that spoke in such a nice manner. He had a house elf of his own at home and they used the term 'Master' and 'serve' too often. He was however surprised to discover a House elf at Hogwarts. There were so many things that Kyle did not know about the school and he would learn them with time but he was not expecting house elf in Hogwarts. He wondered how many they were and if they were hired or their generations and families had been serving the school forever. "Do house elfs make the food we eat everyday?" he asked both Rose and the house elf standing in front of them.

Rose wasn't herself these days. The lack of sleep and dread of going home had combined to make her feel pretty low these days. She hated feeling down because usually she was upbeat and happy and going along the lines of yolo! It was so unlike her to be down in the dumps and she knew that Lucie would notice when she went back home but Rose hated being like this. She wanted to pick herself up and just force herself to be happy and maybe if she did enough of that she would somehow manage to crack a real smile. The last time she had been in any way happy was when she was dancing with Wes.That had been the happiest she had been in ages and she wished more days could be like that. She thought about her Papa too much and she wished she didn't because the subject always brought her down and she wanted to be happy. She was energetic and she usually always had a buzz going through her which meant she was nearly constantly moving but that wasn't really the case these days. When she could she tried to be happy and tried to crack a smile because that's what she loved doing.Smiling and laughing and making other people laugh and smile. So when the boy nearly jumped out of her skin Rose couldn't help burst out laughing. It felt good to finally genuinely laugh. She felt a bit bad for giving him such a fright, truthfully she hadn't been expecting such a reaction but then again it was nearly midnight and he had been by himself down in the dungeons so if the roles had been reversed she probably would have reacted in the same way but she was glad he had reacted the way he had because it made her laugh hard.Rose had a very infectious laugh. It was all bubbly and totally contagious. It suited her friendly ,happy aura that nearly always surrounded her.

When he turned around Rose recognized him.His name was Kyle Cavanaugh. She remembered when she had been so tired that she had nearly sat between Kyle and another boy names Grant.Needless to say she had been terribly embarrassed and she had found it hard to look at either of them in the face for quite some time with out blushing. But she had gotten over that now,put it behind her.She had been much more observant when she had walked into the Great Hall every other time. She even splashed cold water on her face so she would walk up properly so she didn't nearly drift asleep as she walked which was very hard to do because every time she would drift she would almost fall and people probably thought she was drunk or something because she would be walking straight and gradually she would start walking to one side, her footsteps getting more clumsy and then she would stop ,suddenly realized what was happening, blush and then walk much faster and try to ignore the giggles and whispering. "Sorry but I couldn't resist"She said smiling. He looked a bit under the weather and she hoped scaring him like that hadn't done any damage but he seemed okay after a few breaths. He didn't seem to know what to do which probably meant he had never been her before. "Well sometimes when the house elves are here they will offer to make you food or you can just make it yourself"Rose said walking over to a cupboard and taking out a loaf of bread. She then got some cheese, butter and ham. While she was getting these she heard a little voice. The fact that house elves wanted to please their masters so much sort of made Rose a bit sad. They devoted all their lives to making other people happy but then again they seemed happy to do that.Rose started making her sandwich "Yes,they make all the food.Usually this place is full of busy elves"She said looking back at Kyle and the elf.Once she was finished making her sandwich she put everything away and walked back to Kyle with her sandwich in hand. "So what would you like?"She asked before taking a bite of her sandwich.

Despite the late hour and the tiredness that came with it, not to mention the flu Kyle managed a warm smile when Rose said she could not resist it. Her smile was nice and bubbly. Kyle knew very well that had he been in her spot he would have done something similar and maybe even worse because Kyle liked pulling pranks. When shopping for his school items, his dad had accompanied him otherwise Kyle would have happily visited some joke shop and got a few pranking items. He wondered if the nearby village had such products at any of the shop. The village trip was coming up soon and he made a mental note to take some galleons while he visited the village just in case.

He watched as Rose walked around, extracting things from the cupboards as if she knew the place. He wondered if she frequently came here. As she answered that there were many house elfs at Hogwarts and were normally in the kitchen, Kyle added two plus two and figured out that all the cleaning like of the common room and such was thanks to the house elf. He was under the impression that some cleaning spell was placed on Hogwarts. Kyle's father did not think much of them but Kyle knew better. They were very nice and helped a lot. If only they cared a little about themselves and got treated nicely Kyle would feel nice to have them working all the time. Back at home, Kyle tried his best to give minimum work to his house elf and treated it very nicely. "I don't know how to cook anything. Did you make a sandwich?"Kyle asked Rose as she packed away the things. She had done it so fast. He wondered if she used magic. After coming to Hogwarts, Kyle realized just how much he actually needed to learn. Knowing math, science, language, arts, horse riding, swimming and playing music instruments was not everything. Chores like dishes, bed, sweeping and cooking were things that his father always said did not matter but Kyle was discovering just how wrong his father was.

"Could you please make me something?"he asked the house elf. "A grilled cheese sandwich and anything else you had for dinner...maybe soup." It was true that Kyle was very hungry but he did not want to bother the house elf so much. He could heat up the dinner left overs and make Kyle a sandwich and that would do. As the house elf nodded and went to prepare the food, Kyle turned to Rose and asked "Do you usually come here at night?" Just as Kyle finished his sentence he sneezed and quickly wiped his nose with his handkerchief. "Do you think it would be wise to go to the hospital wing to get some medicine for the flu? Its been ruining my taste buds and sleep. But if the medicine is too bitter I rather not" Kyle was just eleven and he did not like bitter medicines unless his mother forced him to have them.

Rose was feeling better now. She was glad that Kyle happened to be down in the kitchens. The fact she hadn't gotten to scare him had really affected her mood in a good way.It had given her a good laugh which had lifted her spirits considerably.Talking to someone was managing to distract her from why she couldn't sleep in the first place. She should probably do things like this more often. She should have some more fun,it was proving to be the only thing that was distracting her successfully. When she had been acting crazy, dancing and singing with Wes she had forgotten the outside world and had just had fun. She was tired of moping around and not being herself. It totally went against what she believed in.She would have to watch her step though she wouldn't put it past a fellow Gryffindor to try and return the favor. She certainly would if the roles were reversed and she had an inkling that he would too.

There was tonnes of food in the kitchen. It was the most amount of food she had ever seen in the one place before. She wouldn't mind getting stuck down there because she would never run out of food. The house elves could be good company when they weren't asking you were you okay or did you want something. Since Rose often couldn't sleep she would come down here to eat something and try to take her mind off certain thoughts. She found it easier to sleep with a full stomach too. Rose was surprised when he said he couldn't cook, she thought everyone could cook. She had been cooking since she was small as had most kids in her home town but obviously that wasn't the case for some people "Yeah,a ham and cheese sandwich"Rose said smiling taking another bit "I can teach you how to cook something if you want?"She suggested. She would happy to teach him something simple,he might find that he likes cooking.Rose loves making cupcakes, cookies and cakes. She only made any sort of savory dish when she was making dinner. She didn't make it for fun. He was obviously very hungry since he asked for a grilled cheese sandwich and soup.Rose had no idea what a grilled cheese sandwich was.It was fairly obviously what it was but Rose couldn't really picture it in her head. She would never grill bread and cheese. She would soon find out what it looked like though. She was sure the house elves would come back with quite a selection of foods. They usually got you more then what she wanted which was sweet but Rose would have to finish it all so she didn't hurt their feelings. That was why she choose to get her own food "Yeah,I can't sleep much and I find it's easier to sleep with a full stomach"She said finished off half her sandwich. She had to admit it was nice to feel herself filling up. Rose looked at him "Well the way I look at it is would you rather go around feeling sick and miserable for the next week or so or just take maybe one or two spoons of bitter medicine for one or two days?"Rose said raising her eyebrows. She didn't act like her age in some ways and in others she acted totally like a twelve year old girl.

Kyle knew many people who came to know that he, Kyle did not know simple things like making his bed-which he had been able to learn in the past three weeks- and other things like cooking thought he was a spoilt brat. Well he had been spoiled by his father in those matters only the situation was a little different here as he did not choose to live such a lifestyle. Since he had arrived at Hogwarts, Kyle had decided that when he would go back home he was going to stand up to his father and free his house elf and his servant. First of all, he did not want to waste money and secondly he needed to live life like normal people. Kyle was very sure this would cause an argument but he was ready for it. He had not bee sorted into gryffindor so that he could spend his life under his father's orders of spoiling him.

The young boy grinned as Rose said she could teach him how to cook some things. Kyle was so happy to be in this magical school were people were nice to him. His roommate Grant had taught him how to make his bed and here was Rose offering to teach him to cook."I would be so happy to learn" he told Rose with a smile. "Do you know how to bake things too..like cakes and cookies?" he asked curiously. Well, what more could you expect an eleven year old boy to ask if not about sweet baked things. He wondered if Rose was feeling up for it and would teach if something now after he had some food. Kyle was not feeling sleepy and it would be good to have someone to hangout with and learn at the same time.

The house elf returned bringing a cheese sandwiches, chicken soup, mashed potatoes and onion rings levitating the tray. Kyle was amazed at the magic that the other magical creatures had and he wondered how the elf did all that without a wand. "Thankyou so much" he said with a warm smile at the house elf. He took a seat at a nearby table and waited as the house elf put the food there and handed him a plate. Kyle was pretty hungry and people would not be able to guess how much he ate considering his slim and fit figure. His father had made sure he played a lot of sports and ate too. Kyle served himself a sandwich, some onion rings and mashed potatoes and poured the soup in the bowl and tucked in. Taking a bite of his grilled cheese sandwich, he could taste the melted cheese and it was simply delicious. After he chewed and swallowed he said to the houself "This is really good." The houself just smiled and said he was happy to see him happy. Kyle asked the house elf "Do you guys have supplies for baking things?" The house elf nodded and went once again inside to get something.

Kyle drank some soup and heard as Rose asked him if he would rather be sick or take some bitter medicine. She sounded very much like his mother. Kyle was glad that someone was around to knock some sense into him. "Take the medicine. I don't want to miss classes and be sick especially since the exams are approaching soon and we even have Halloween!" he told Rose. Kyle had almost forgotten about Halloween. He had been brought up in London but his mom had always been there to celebrate Halloween. It was great fun all the dressing up in costumes and the candy. He had not even decided his costume yet. "Have you thought of what you will go as in Halloween?"he asked Rose wondering if she celebrated the festival back where she came from. Now that Kyle thought about it, Kyle did not know much about her like where she came from. Eating some onion rings he offered Rose and said "You should try some, they are very nice"

Rose had had to learn to mind herself as a kid. Lucie was often at work and she would have to cook for herself. Her Dad would cook his own meals,Rose would make sure not to be any where near. Though there was no written schedule they almost acted as if they were following one. They would never be in the same part of the house at the same times. He wasn't out of his study much.Rose had no idea what went on inside there. She was sort of jealous that Lucie got to go in and she didn't.She couldn't hardly go inside, things would not end well. Maybe some day when she was older she would gather up the confidence to go in and face her Papa and make him look at her.She was usually brave with most things. She wasn't afraid to do anything but when it came to her Papa her courage deserted her.Soon she would be going home and some truths would be reveled. She wasn't looking forward to it at all.

"It's pretty easy once you get the hang of it"She said smiling encouragingly. For some cooking can be a complete disaster. People just can't follow recipes and go off and do their own thing which usually means it ends in disaster but for some who are talented at cooking they might actually make something nice.Rose wasn't that good yet,she had to follow the recipe but for some she knew them off by heart she had made them so many times. You just got into the hand of things. "They are my favorite to make"She said grinning. They were her forte, she loved making cookies and cakes. She got so much enjoyment out of it. They were her speciality. "We can make something after you are finished maybe?"She suggested. That would definitely help pass the time and Rose would hopefully enjoy herself and find it easier to go back to sleep.

Rose smiled knowingly when all the food appeared. It was so typical of the elves. It was so sweet of them too. They really were so nice and helpful. The food looked delicious.Kyle seemed to really like the elves and she was glad he respected them.Anyone who disrespected them were very high above themselves and mean. You can't treat someone cruelly or disrespected something just because they are smaller and weaker then you. It's not fair and you are a bit of a coward for disrespecting someone smaller and weaker then you.Doesn't make you very powerful or tough.Rose walked over at sat opposite him at the table.Sh didn't know what one of the items of food were. They were circular looking but Rose had no idea what they were. They looked nice though and Rose wanted to ask him what they were but he seemed to be enjoying his food so she would leave it to when he was finished.

"Thought so"She said smiling. Boys she thought supressing another smile. Always so predictable but it was cute in some ways. She had known plenty of boys like Kyle at home. They were all young, girls had their habits too. Rose just hadn't experienced many of them. She had grown up very much in an adult world. She had to mature before others but that didn't mean she hadn't acted like her age a lot of the time. She could do crazy things. She wouldn't care what anyone thought about her.She was having fun and acting her age. She was enjoying life, doing what an eight, nine ,ten year old girl should be doing. No one can give out to her for acting her age. Everyone has to act a little crazy sometimes especially people like herself who would feel suffocated at home. "I don't really celebrate Halloween"She said shrugging her shoulders. Anyone she had told her had seemed shocked that she didn't really celebrate Halloween. "I don't know if I'll go to the feast,I don't have a costume anyways"She said smiling. She looked at the things he offered. She looked at the curiously "What are they?"She asked curiously. She really had no idea what they were.

Kyle's stomach had finally calmed down as he supplied it with food. It was now craving for something sweet and baked since those things were being mentioned. Kyle was glad that Rose was nice and friendly and was not thinking that he was totally stupid as he did not know how to cook. He did not know many girls like her. Most of the girls liked to show off their talents and the worst part of it was they were always secretive of things. Example if someone lost weight they would not share their diet. Not that Kyle needed any weight losing. He was slim and was soon going to be taller than 5.2 which was his current height. Girls could be nice on everyday basis compared to guys but then again guys could easily forgive each other and make fun of each other while when girls started being jealous or fought it was a nightmare especially if a guy was caught up. "Yeah I hope so. I think now that I have finally come to see how helpful the house elves are I will be coming to the kitchens more often and helping them and learning a few things for myself"he told Rose. That was going to be the only way he could learn to cook because there was no way he was going to be allowed to cook in the kitchens at the Cavanaugh estates.

Kyle grinned widely as Rose said baking cookies and cake were her favorite things to make. He nodded swallowing some mashed potatoes as she offered that they could make something after he was finished. It was exactly what Kyle had hoped she would suggest but he had been to shy to ask. Not that he was scared or anything but it was almost one in the morning and suggesting baking by sacrificing sleep was not something he could ask from someone he had just started to get to know. "That would surely be fun" he said with a smile.

Kyle finished his sandwich and drank up the remaining of his chicken soup. He was almost full and he did not want to eat so much that he would start feeling bloated. Kyle was a little disappointed to hear that Rose did not celebrate Halloween. Well, he couldn't expect the whole world to like and do things which he did. That was another thing that the young gryffindor had learned after arriving at Hogwarts. "I'm thinking of going as this muggle superhero called spiderman but that's just too normal. I will just have to come up with something better" he told her as he sipped some water. Then standing up to clean his dish he pushed the plate of onion rings towards Rose and said "They are called onion rings. They have onion inside and some crunch stuff covering it" he explained. Kyle just realized that he was pathetic at this. He had been eating them for nine or ten years now and he never knew what were the ingredients that made the paste which covered the onion rings. "I don't know much as I suck at cooking but I guess if you try them you'll know the other ingredients" he added as he wiped his dish and put it away.

"The best part of Halloween back home was playing pranks. There won't be any of that here, just the feast so I guess it will be pretty boring" he said on some level to himself. He hadn't given much thought on how they celebrated Halloween here at Hogwarts. Suddenly all the excitement seemed to fade away. Who was he going to play pranks on or with. This Halloween was certainly going to be no fun. Just as he was thinking along these lines the house elf appeared with some baking ingredients. Kyle thanked the elf and took the ingredients to Rose and said "So chef, what are we baking this morning?" Well it was one in the morning so technically it was morning.

Rose had found the English language very hard to learn at first. There were all these different exceptions to the rules. It was so more complicated then French. There wasn't as many exceptions or rules and th English had a funny way of saying things. She had started learning English in school but once she had found out about Hogwarts New Zealand she had begun teaching herself so she wouldn't be too behind when it came to going to the school .She hoped that she might even be fluent as the language, but it had proved much harder. She had been only six when she started learning and she was basically teaching herself as her teachers had never gone into too much detail though they were taught the basics so we could attempt to talk in English if we had to. But Rose could never understand the people on English tv. They always spoke so fast,Rose would be struggling to understand what the hell they were talking about. But as the years went by she got better and now she was quite good at English. Some of her sentences did sound weird and she would always have the accent but she was proud of what she had achieved through pure determination. "They love helping people"She said looking over at the elf. They didn't really have any concern for their own well being ,they only cared for their masters. "they love cooking, ils sont très bons pour la cuisson"Rose said smiling fondly at the elf.

It was always fun making buns or any sweet dishes. She loved tasting the mixture as she made it. Lickng her bowl was her favorite thing to d. Lucie would always give her the bowl or the spoon to lick when what ever they were cooking was in the oven. It had been Lucie who had got Rose into cooking sweet dishes. In her spare time Lucie made cakes etc for special occasions.Rose had had to learn to cook savory by herself , she found that she had a love for creating her own dishes. She loved every sort of vegetable ,meat, sauce under the sun. She would make up her own recipes and Lucie and her Papa had always been her guinea pigs when it came to tasting them and seeing what they thought of them. Funnily enough even though her Papa had known it was she who had made the dinner, he was always try it and give lots of feedback which surprised her but what she loved. She often read over his views and thoughts and always took them into account. "It will,be prepared to be amazed by my cooking"She said teasingly

Rose had heard of Spiderman. A few boys had worn the costume for Halloween. Rose found it kind of cool that you could shot out web stuff and stick to buildings or make huge webs. She wasn't really interested in superheros. If she had to pick a favorite it would be Captain America. He was a true gentleman ,he was nice, had a kick-ass shield ,brave and was the first ever muggle superhero. Needless to say he was a very old superhero but he was still her favorite. She had some vintage cards of him at home. They had been passed from her great grandfather to her grandfather to her own Papa and then she had found them one day when she had been cleaning the attic. She had brought them to Hogwarts with her and she kept them in her case in her dorm. They were one of her most treasured possessions. One,because she liked Captain America so much and two because it was one of the only things that belonged to her that came from her family.Since all her family were dead she had never been given anything form any relations. So even though her Papa hadn't given her the cards she still thought the belonged to her.

Rose curiously looked at the onion rings. She tentatively took one and tried it. It certainly was what it said on the tin. Rose liked them though. She chewed more quickly and had soon finished her first onion ring "They're good"She said smiling. "Probably, the people here don't seem to like to prank other people"She said. Nothing exciting had happened in the school other then the dancing and singing she had done with Wes. That had been the most amount of fun she had had in ages. It was something she would remember for a long time. She had always made a friend through it though they barely knew each other. "Well"Rose said standing up and beginning to walk back and forth across the room. She usually did this when she was thinking. It would have to be something simple as Kyle didn't really seem to have a clue about cooking. "How about chocolate muffins?"She suggested. They were easy and delicious and not too boring to make.

Kyle was excited by the idea of doing his first cooking ever. Well he was not going to do it on his own but at least he would participate. He noticed as Rose spoke and put in some French. Kyle's father had insisted that he learned a second language and he had chosen French. He knew very little German as he thought it was hard but French, he found to be easy. "ils sont certainement. Et je suis sûr que si vous" Kyle replied with a grin. "Êtes-vous de la France?" he asked in French. As it was his second language he was not as fluent in it as he was with English but he did quite well. He could understand most of the conversations, movies and plays. His British accented French did stand out a bit though.

Kyle was glad to hear that Rose too liked pranks. At least she was not like some other girls who thought it was childish. "Yeah and it would be a lot harder with all the prefects and Professors" he said agreeing as Rose said people at Hogwarts did not like playing pranks. "What about you? Have you pulled a prank on anyone before?" he asked her curiously wanting to know more about the friendly girl. He wondered if she would pull a prank with him. It would be fun. But there was the whole part of ending up in detention and losing house points. He wondered if Rose would go to those extents for fun. Kyle was not someone who would do that all the time but an occasional prank would not hurt anyone.

He watched as she then started pacing back and forth and he wondered if she was looking for something. As she asked him if chocolate muffins would be fine to make he understood that pacing helped her to think or something. Nodding his head, he smiled and said "Yup. They would be delicious". He too stood up to join Rose and do whatever she would ask him to do. He was going to be like the assistant and help with the work and learn. "So where do we begin?"he asked her excitedly.

Ils sont certainement et je suis sûr que vous êtes trop-They certainly are and I'm sure you are too.
Êtes-vous de la France- Are you from France?

Rose couldn't hide her surprise when he spoke to her in her native tongue. She hadn't met anyone else in the school that spoke French. It was nice to hear it being spoken. It was almost a chore speaking another language the whole time. It wasn't natural for her but she had to do it if anyone was to understand her.She also had to speak it so she could get used to it and make it better. Practice makes perfect and if she spoke French all the time then she wouldn't improve. She even tried to speak English in her thoughts which wasn't easy as it was automatic for her to speak French. Also when she was speaking she had to stop translating French into English but actually speak the English. It was hard and she was doing her best to make herself as fluent as she could at the English language. It was so much more complicated with it's silent letters, different ways of sayings thing and just being so different. "Merci Monsieur"She said smiling. He had good French. He was probably better at French then she was at English. But English was a lot harder. "Qui,je suis né dans la ville de Nantes"She said smiling "Your French is good"She said speaking in English once more. "How long have you been learning?"She asked curiously.

He was right,it would be a lot harder. Not as many people liked to prank. They thought it was babish and immature. Really it was just acting their age. Eleven year olds aren't supposed to be milling around, chatting at a party. They should be having fun, getting up to mischief though that isn't every kids cup of tea. As long as they don't cause too much bother they shouldn't get in trouble but there is always that professor or prefect that is just looking for reasons to show their authority.Truthfully she hadn't done much pranks. At home she had to act like an adult which was why Hogwarts was so liberating. She didn't have to worry about the washing, cooking ,if the house was clean. She could act her age which was something she hadn't done for a long time. It's why she hated seeing kids waste teir childhood on trying to be grown up when people like her had to be grown up. It wasn't that much fun. So much worries go through your head. Any kid who tries to act grown up is just kidding themselves. They should make the most of their age because once they are grown up they will wish they were young again. "No,I didn't get a lot of chances"She said looking down at her hands for a second before looking up and smiling "What about you?"She asked curiously.Suddenly the vision of him nearly jumping threww feet in the air and shouting went through her mind and she couldn't stop her infectious giggles. She probably looked like a right ****,randomly giggling but the image was too funny;. "Sorry, just getting a flash back"She said after finally gaining control of her giggles. That would keep her going for a while anyways.

"Great"She said walking over to where the flour and sugar was kept. "If you could get the weigh scales,a bowl, spoon, spatula ,baking tray and another small bowl"Rose said rattling off the equipment. She was sure the house elf would help. She took out the flour, sugar, coca, and baking powder. She lay them on the counter and then went over and got the butter, eggs and smile. Then finally she got the chocolate and vanilla essence. The house elves really had every sort of food in the kitchen. It was amazing. Once everything was laid out she turned to Kyle. "Now if you could put on an apron and wash your hands,we'll be ready"She said smiling at him. She tied up her hair into a loose pony tail. She went over and got an apron herself and washed her own hands. She was doing this recipe completely off memory and she hoped she got her measurements. She would let Kyle do most of it since it was his first time and hopefully he'd get more of a sense achievement if he did most of it himself. "So if you could weigh out 250gs of the flour please"She said smiling ,ready to help him get started with the weight scales if he needed some help.

With his British accent, Kyle knew many people who were surprised to hear him speak French fluently. It was sort of his second language and he used it whenever he visited his cousins in France or when they visited London. It was good practice but his teacher told him he had a lot of places that needed to be improved. Kyle knew the times when he was driven mad because his language teachers had become friends and asked him to write essay's in two different languages but on the same topic. It had been a nightmare yet today Kyle knew that he thanked them both because only that sort of work had made him capable of communicating, reading and writing French. He heard Rose as she said she was from Nantes. He had heard of the city, it was located in western France but he had never got a chance of visiting there. "I've been to France before but only Paris" he told Rose remembering his trip to the two places. He had been to Paris twice but once it had only been for a day as he was accompanying his parents to be among the VIP in a muggle fashion show. His father had told him that one of the people working in the fashion industry was an influential wizard with whom he had business relations and it was very crucial that they should attend. "I have cousins there. They are not French. They attend the school there so they shifted to France" he continued telling Rose about some of his extended family. Well Kyle had a very big extended family and he had cousins almost everywhere and the funny thing was he often visited them and was close to them. Kyle thought the main reason for his often visits to his cousins was because his father did not want him to be friends with random neighborhood kids and he would rather have him abroad with almost equal status.

Kyle nodded as Rose said she did not get many chances at pulling pranks. "Yes, all the time. I just had to be sure my father would never find out" he said his smile sort of fading as he recalled the memory of when he was eight and his father had caught him and his cousins, him being the leader as they had filled all the balloons with water and blown them up for a wedding. Only to later puncture them magically and watch as the close relatives got a good shower. His memory down the lane was stopped as Rose made a sound of a giggle. He watched her as she giggled on and finally getting hold of herself and announcing that she was having a flash back. Well, one thing was for sure her flash back was certainly cheerful compared to his. "A funny memory I suppose" he said with a smile. He felt it was rude to ask in case she did not want to share it with him. So he did not wait for her to say anything or for an awkward silence to pass between them.

He got to work. He had no idea where all the things that she had mentioned were kept in this big kitchen. He started searching a few drawers and shelves and managed to get the weight scales and the tray. The house elf realizing the damage Kyle could cause if he was allowed to carry on, on his own came quickly to his help and handed him two bowls, different in size and a big spoon. He went to look for the spatula and Kyle remembered a certain charm they had recently learned. "Accio Spatula" he said after he had extracted his wand from his pocket. The spatula quickly zoomed out of a nearby cupboard and flew towards him and he caught it. "Cool!" he said, a little surprised as he had managed to make it fly all the way and not drop the spatula in mid air. He placed all the items near the ingredients and nodded as Rose asked him to wash his hands and put on an apron. He had seen people wear aprons and the chef caps. He washed his hands and put on the apron that was loose on him but that was fine. "All done" he said with a wide grin. He was very excited to be helping and being given work to do. He would actually be contributing to this baking.

"Sure" he said to Rose as she asked him to weigh 250g of flour. Kyle took the weighing scale that read 250 and dipped it into the flour container. Bringing it back he watched as the flour sat like a mountain on the weighing scale and using his finger he gently brushed off all the extra flour. "Like this?" he asked showing it to Rose to be sure he had measured it correctly.

Rose wondered were there many other French students in the school. She knew there was a magical school in France and probably a lot of students had gone there. She didn't know why she had gone to Hogwarts. Maybe her parents had enrolled her there before she was born because her Papa had attended the Hogwarts in Scotland. He had written lots of stories about his school days. He had kept journals for some years and even though they were private Rose had read through them eagerly, trying to figure out what her real Papa was like. She only knew the depressed, angry father who was still mourning her mother. She did know the man who had once fallen in love with her mother and had written so patinately about certain things. It was a shame things had turned out the way they did. She was sure she was a lot like her Papa. Lucie always told her she looked like a carbon copy of her mother but she had more of her Papa's personality in her. It was nice to know that she had a bit of her parents inside her so she hadn't lost them completely. Her story was sad. She lost both of her parents when her mother had died. Instead of having just one parent she had lost him to grief and her mother to death. Sometimes Rose wanted to cry out in frustration for the unfairness of life. She had learned that crying really didn't help. You just had to move on and focus on the future. She knew she had a bright future and it wouldn't involve her Papa even though she would want nothing more then to have him in her life. But obviously someone up there didn't think that was right so she knew she would have to go through life without either of her parents. In a sense she was an orphan but Rose lived in the hope that something good would happen.

Rose nodded, she had never actually been to Paris. She had always wanted to go. There were some amazing paintings and museums up there that she would love to visit but she had never gotten the chance to visit there. It was a shame because from what she had heard it was a beautiful city. "I've never been anywhere but Nantes. I've always wanted to visit France but due to certain circumstances I never got the chance but hopefully I'll get there in the future."She said smiling sadly. She would eventually get there. Maybe when she was older she could go there herself. Lucie never had any time off to bring her and well there was no chance of getting a lift of her Papa so usually Rose was left stranded in Nantes. She didn't live in the city. She lived outside it but she could easily walk there or get the bus. It was quite a sizable distance but Rose was used to walking long distances from walking to paint or draw. "Ah I see"She said her smile wider this time. She wished she had cousins. As far as she knew her Mama and Papa had been only children. Both her grandparents were did and she was her parent's first child so she had no siblings. Rose and her Papa had been her mothers only family at her Mama's funeral and she herself had only been a week old. Her Papa had been a mess and really Lucie had been the person who had handled everything. The funeral hadn't been small. Her Mama had been loved and many people had flocked to the funeral to pay their respects.

"He's not a fan of pranks then, your father"She said smiling slightly. She noticed the slight faltering of his smile so obviously an unpleasant memory was flashing before his eyes. She had plenty of them stuck inside her head. She wished she could make them appear as they often caused nightmares and just unhappiness. Rose loved life and she hated the way that her first eleven years had been wasted. Life was so short when you looked at the bigger picture. She hated people who constantly complained about life when really they were just looking for attention or took all the wonderful things they had in life for granted. Parents for example. Millions of children constantly complained about their parents. Rose wanted nothing more then parents. People who loved her, looked out for her and cared for her. People just didn't get how lucky they were. Rose hoped they never felt real loss or had a real reason to complain about life. "Thankfully yes"She said trying to stop giggling again.

Rose watched as Kyle got to work. So far she was impressed. He had used initiative using the charm and thankfully the house elf had helped or else Kyle could have ended up causing a disaster. Once he had washed his hands and put on her apron, they were ready to begin. Chocolate muffins were easy to make but they tasted delicious. They were a favorite recipe of hers and she often made them. She knew the recipe of by heart because she had done it so many times. It wasn't that hard to remember really. She walked over the over and turned it up to 175C. Thankfully it was a pretty basic over. It wasn't that different to the oven she had at home. Needless to say there were many ovens inside the kitchen due to the sheer amount of food that had to be made everyday. There were a few ovens beside the counter on which all the equipment and ingredients were set. "Yup.that's right, now pour that into one bowl"She said watching him as he did so. "Now weigh out 125gs of butter"She said pointing to the butter on the table. Some used margarine but Rose preferred using butter.

Kyle was enjoying the way this night was turning. He was glad that he had put aside his laziness and had come down to the kitchens or else he wouldn't have met Rose and wouldn't be having such a nice time chatting and trying to bake. He heard as Rose said she had never been to France. Kyle knew that it happened many times that people visited places far from home and not ones that were close by. But they were only twelve and they had their whole lives to see the world. Kyle was hoping to one day go for a World Tour because he loved travelling. It would of course be much better to go with his parents or other relatives. He had been to Canada, France, Scotland and America once but he had only been to these places for brief periods which were usually spent meeting businessmen that knew his father. "Do you have any siblings or cousins?"he asked Rose curiously. Kyle wanted to have a baby brother or a sister, that would be fun. Sometimes when everyone was busy at home, Kyle got very lonely but having a sibling would ensure that he was never alone and he could even play with him/her and share everything. He had never heard his parents talk about this before and he was too scared to ask them if he was ever going to have another brother or sister. All his other cousins had siblings except him and sometimes when they had to play games involving teams of two he was usually left alone. He hated it when that happened. "I wished I had a baby brother or a sister, I could teach him things and even boss around a little" he said, his voice reflecting how much he desperately wished for this to happen.

Kyle grinned as he watched Rose trying to stop giggling once again as she said her flashback was funny. Pouring the 250 grams of flour into the bowl he smiled pleased with himself for doing this part correctly. Next he took the butter and dipped the 125g scale in it. Before the butter could totally fill the scale his hands were all slippery as he tried to push the butter into it. After a minute or so he had finally managed to measure the butter that he needed. Turning his scale upside down as it faced the bowl, he watched a little annoyed as the butter hardly moved from the scale. "God! This thing won't move" he muttered to himself as he took the cup scale and banged it onto the side of the bowl and finally the butter slipped out of the scale and into the bowl. Taking a breath of relief he put the scale away and washed his hands to make them clean again. If he was going to handle other glass made utensils he had to be sure his hands were not oily or else he would be dropping everything and making a mess. "So what next?" he asked finally feeling excited once. "Do you have the whole recipe memorized?" he asked Rose suddenly noticing that she was not referring to any book or such. That was very impressive. Rose was surely very intelligent and smart because she knew not only how to cook but she had good memory power too and she was nice. Kyle was glad he was finally getting to know someone cool around this place. Not that the people whom he talked to before were not nice.
