Letters to an old friend

Kat had a few letters to send out and she had stupidly let Lavender come and go as she pleased instead of keeping her caged up. She grabbed her handful of letters with a groan and headed up to the owlery. When she arrived she looked for her own snowy owl when she saw another owl in the window with a letter attached to it. Curiosity getting the better of her she looked to see who it was for and to her great surprise it was addressed to her. Kat opened it quickly and was excited to see that it was from Courtney Potter. She read it over twice and then looked at the pictures that had been sent.

I miss you soooo much! I haven’t seen or written to you in ages, and I do apologize. Time flies by way too quickly and I can’t believe I have been away for almost three years now!

How are you? What is going on with Hogwarts? How is the SDA? Is the Ravenclaw Quidditch team kicking Gryffindor’s behind?

Putting away the letters and pictures in her pocket, Kat sent off the rest of her letters to her family before heading back to her dorm room. Once there and sitting on her bed she pulled out a piece of parchment and a quill and began to write a return letter to her friend. Once she'd finished it she walked back to the owlery and used one of the school owls to send it.

Courtney Potter,

Sweet Merlin it's been ages since I've heard from you. I was so glad to get your letter. The SDA is...well, about the same. It's still hard to get people to the meetings, but I'm not giving up hope on it. And have you gone completely mental? Gryffindor will always bring it on the quidditch pitch...no worries there. Although I am dating one of the beaters for the Ravenclaw team. Sorry this is so short, but I've got to get back to the books. OWL year and all that. Hope to hear from you again soon! I miss you!

[Courtney Potter]

Courtney was just about to start gathering up items from her kitchen to make something to eat when she heard something move about outside of her door. "Nanook?" Courtney called, figuring the dog was tired of playing outside in the snow. As she opened the front door, Courtney saw a letter sitting on the porch of the lighthouse, not Nanook. Courtney picked up the letter and sat in the living room to read it, happy to once again be in touch with her school friends.

What are you trying to pull by sending me a two sentence letter? When I asked you about your life at Hogwarts, I expected at least a paragraph or two! (but would definitely accept it if you wanted to send me a couple of pages instead) . Ravenclaw boyfriend, you say? Wow, the last time I saw you, you were way too little to have a boyfriend! I'm glad that you haven't given up on the SDA, even though it is difficult to get members to participate in the meetings.

Kat was taking a nap when she was awakened by a light tapping on her window. She groaned loudly and turned over in the bed, but the tapping persisted so she reluctantly dragged her tired self out of bed and opened the window. It was the same school owl she'd sent to Courtney the day before. Kat patted the owls head and gave it a treat after taking the letter it had for her. She read over it and and chuckled lightly to herself. Leaning over the side of her bed she pulled out the picture box she kept under there and dug through it, pulling out a few pictures to send to her friend and then she sat and wrote out another letter.

Hey Courtney,

Sorry for such a short reply last time. Been a bit under the weather the last few weeks plus studying for these OWL exams are about to get the better of me. I'll be so glad when this year is over with...but then of course I'll have NEWT exams to look forward to then. Guess it's all a vicious cycle. Wow, I guess it has been a while since you've seen me. I'll be 16 in April...definitely not a little girl anymore. Yes, I'm dating a Ravenclaw. His name is Sumner and he's absolutely the best thing that's ever happened to me. He's adorable. I'm hoping that the SDA will be better next year, especially as I will have a bit more time to dedicate to it once exams are done with. Oh did I tell you that I've been made co-captain for Gryffindor team? I was so surprised and excited. So what all is going on with you? Any plans after you finish school? It's so good hearing from you! Miss you so much!

After Courtney had finsihed writing her response to Estrella's letter, she picked up the next letter that was on top of the small bunch and tore it open. This one conatined pictures as well. She looked at the pictures and chuckled, everyone was growing up so quickly! Courtney read the letter a couple of times before writing her response to Katalina.

Hello Kat,

I'm sorry to hear that you've been feeling under the weather for the past few weeks, that's an awful long time to be sick for. I hope the school nurses and your fellow Gryffindors have been taking care of you! I'd send you a box of chocolates, but maybe I'll wait until you're feeling better! Try not to fret too much about exams, you are a smart girl and will be able to get through them successfully.

Your picture is adorable, and so is the picture of your mate! Wow, he definitely wasn't in school while I was around. You'll have to introduce me to him the next time I see you, which I'm hoping is really soon because I miss you tonnes!

Congrats on being made co-captain! All of you Hogwartian quidditch players are making me so proud!

I haven't made any set plans on what to do after school is finished, but I have told mom and dad that I wanted to move out to New Zealand. Hopefully I've been practicing enough with my beater's bat and bludger to be scouted for a professional quidditch team! Haha! In my dreams, maybe. Well, I have one more letter to read and respond to, and then I better get back to the books. Please write back soon!!
