Bruin mounted the stairs to the Owlery, hoping that Legend would not hold to large a grudge against him for his infrequent visits. Legend swooped down and landed on a perch beside Bruin, quickly gobbling up a few treats and nipping at Bruin's ear playfully.

Bruin had brought two letters, one addressed to Ford and the other to Sophia as well as a handful of treats for Legend. Bruin pulled out the first letter to Ford and scanned over it before rolling it up and fixing it to Legend's leg.

Ford,

I am writing this letter to you to offer my apologies for my behaviour at the Yule Ball. For my part in the altercation, Professor King has taken 50 points from Gryffindor and required me to write this letter of apology to you. In truth, I would have aoplogized to you anyways as I feel horrible for what happened. You deserve better from a fellow Brother and I will do everything I can to make things between us better.

I'm not quite sure what it is, but you, Sophia and I seem to have a communication problem. I consider you both to be good friends and don't wish for that to change. It wasn't my intention tonight or ever to make problems between the two of you, but it appears that I have and for that I am very sorry. As you are probably beginning to realize, I have a big mouth and need to learn to keep it shut sometimes, particularly when I have some stupid comment floating around in my head. I'm actually glad that you popped me when you did because I certainly deserved it.

I hope that you will accept this apology and that you have a good break from school. Perhaps in the new year, you and I can talk about things and figure out how to learn from what happened so that it doesn't happen again. It's bad enough to fight with someone, but when that someone is a friend who you admire and respect, it is simply not worth doing.

Bruin then pulled out the second letter, this one addressed to Sophia and read it over once more before attaching it to Legend beside Ford's.

Dear Sophia,

I am writing this letter to you to offer my apologies for my behaviour at the Yule Ball. For my part in the altercation with Ford, Professor King has taken 50 points from Gryffindor and required me to write a number of letters of apology, including this one to you. Speaking truthfully, I don't know exactly what to write to you except that I am sorry that things went so terribly wrong. You deserved an enjoyable evening with Ford and the rest of the attendees and I know that you were denied that thanks to my words and actions towards Ford.

I'm not quite sure what it is, but you and I seem to have really bad luck or timing or something. You and Ford are both good friends and I don't want that to change, but sometimes I just can't seem to act like a friend when I'm around the two of you. It wasn't my intention tonight or ever to make problems between the two of you, but it appears that I have and for that I am very sorry. I am not mad at Ford and am actually glad that he punched me because I certainly deserved it.

I hope that you will accept this apology and that you have a good break from school. I also hope that we can talk about what happened and figure out what it all means. I value our friendship and will do everything I can to make things right if you will give me that chance.

Bruin knew that he wouldn't have the opportunity to speak to either Ford or Sophia in person before leaving for the holidays and hoped that the letters would at least let them know that he was sorry for his actions at the Yule Ball. Bruin gave Legend one last treat with his final instructions and the owl turned on his perch and leapt skywards, disappearing out an opening in the castle wall in a blur of brown feathers.
