OK so a few people are wondering how to do this, so I made this tut, I hope it helps. This shows how to put a border around text, but it works the same for the overall image, just make sure you have selected that layer :)

Once you have your image done and you have your text on and put where you want it, select the layer with the text.

Layer > Transparency > Alpha to selection

Layer > Layer boundary size > Unlink the clip type thing > Increase width and height by two each > Center > Resize

Select > Grow > Depending on how big you want the boarder around the text increase the number, 1 or 2 is usually good

Create a new layer (make sure it is transparent)

Bring the new layer below the one with the text on it

Edit > Fill with FG colour (make sure your fg colour is the colour you want the boarder)

Press Ctrl T to see your finished product without the moving lines

Here you go. Hope this helps and if you have any questions, let me know :)

When I do it, it just turns out the whole thing bold black. :/

Yay done it. Thanks Pat!! <333

Could you perhaps take a screen shot of the problem? Perhaps if you go to:

View > Show Selection and
View > Show Layer Boundary

Make sure the little tick isn't beside those two compands and it might work. If not let me see the screen dump and I'll see if I can help :)

Good tut Pat ^_^ Beth taught me this, and after I do all those steps, I then click :
Filters - Blur - Gaussian blur - Ok

Makes the outside blurry (Like in my banner) xD Anyway yeah, very helpful for everyone :D Thanks x

So I was playing with gimp just now and figure out a faster way to put a border

I usually don't put borders but I did this time around, and it was suppose to be a button but I just made it smaller than usual banners

the finish product which is the first image was in the middle of a transparent background. I did right click>>layer>> transparency>> Alpha to Selection on your finale product, you don't have to duplicate or anything, just do that. Than I went to Select>>Border>> pick one or two pixel and press ok.

From there you pick the brush and than the color you want and just go over it completely it won't ruin your banner it will just paint in the line of the border. That should do it :) You might have to crop it than and than save it, I went to image>>auto crop and it will cut it for you :p thanks to Patty though I wouldn't have figure out the first step.
