The magical world had brought a lot of wonderful things into Hester's life, but she was absolutely certain that the best of all of them was Big Douglas. She had always wanted a pet all to herself, a tall ask with as many brothers as she had, but here she had her dream companion. Big Douglas was big, he was loud, he was wonderfully slimy and perfectly comfortable to ride around on her shoulders or in a pocket whenever Hester wanted company. She had taken him to the Student Lounge today, having pretended to herself that she was going to do some study before the school year started, though now that she was here Hester couldn't even pretend that she had brought any of her books. She set Big Douglas down on a table instead, pulling a little container from her pocket. "Would you like some grubs?" She asked indulgently, opening the container and setting it in front of Big Douglas. Having a pet she had to feed living prey had taken some getting used to, but by now Hester was perfectly accustomed to the contentment on Big Douglas's face as his tongue shot out, snaring the grubs she had brought and eating them with gusto.
