A Little Deeper
Personality: Harper is brave, has an excellent memory, and is infinitely curious. She is selfless and determined, and tries to look at things through the eyes of others. Harper is very clever and loves learning new and unusual things. The five words that describe her are orderly, warm, curious, dreamer, and bookworm.
Special Talents: Harper is an amazing surfer, and she is unusually talented at shearing the sheep. She also has an extraordinary knowledge of books.
History: Harper grew up on a ten acre property in Muriwai. The house is on a hill, overlooking Muriwai Beach, and at the very bottom of the property is bush and a creek. The property is home to many sheep, of which Harper became unusually good at shearing, through plenty of practice. When Harper turned five, she was enrolled in a small primary school in Waimauku. Over the years Harper spent there, she was constantly achieving a National Standard several years older than what was expected of her.
Her father also enrolled her in the Muriwai Surf Lifesaving Club. There Harper learnt to swim and surf, spot the rips and currents, and she got to know her beach really well. Harper made a two close friends, who also went to her primary school, and they stayed friends even after Harper got her letter.
Harper's first sign of magic was when she was eight. Her little sister London, who was barely a year old at the time, had fallen out of the IRB (Inflatable Rescue Boat) her father was riding. He was getting his kids, who were all members of the Muriwai Surf Lifesaving Club, used to the feel of riding an IRB. When London fell out, Harper willed the water to bring her little sister back into the boat. The water twisted into a hand shape, picked up London, and put her back in the IRB.
When Harper received her letter to Hogwarts, she was overjoyed. She bought as many books as she possibly could, and in the time leading up until the first day of school, Harper read and read and read. She loves reading just as much as she loves surfing, even now. On the New Zealand Express she sat alone, and at the Sorting Ceremony, was sorted into Ravenclaw, though she very nearly got Gryffindor. Harper made no close friends, but was as friendly as possible to everybody. She passed her first-year exams with extremely high marks, excelling especially in History of Magic.
Harper's second year went smoothly; she still had no friends, but she found the workload okay and just about lived in the library. It was Ronan's first year, that year, and Harper was disappointed that because Ronan was Gryffindor, they were kept apart. Ronan was really the only person who twelve-year-old Harper classified as a friend. The electives she chose for the following year were Arithmancy and Study of Ancient Runes.
Then came the holidays, and Harper, Ronan, and six-year-old London were all surfing together. A big wave swept Ronan off his board, and he fell under. Ronan hit his head on the board, and began to drown. Harper and London swam an unconscious Ronan to shore, but when help arrived it was already too late - Ronan was dead.
Harper's third year was spent mostly in the library. This year she also found the kitchens, and usually ate there instead of in the Grand Hall. Her fourth year was very similar.
Harper's O.W.L. results were exactly what she had been expecting. 'O' in History of Magic and Arithmancy, 'E' for Defence Against the Dark Arts and Ancient Runes, 'A's in Transfiguration, Charms, and Herbology. She failed dismally at Potions (T), and Astronomy (P). In her sixth year she studied all the subjects she had passed, and for her N.E.W.T.s failed only Herbology.
After leaving school, Harper returned to Muriwai and volunteered at the Club. The only job she applied for was the position of Hogwarts librarian, but she still hasn't gotten a reply. Harper has never had her first kiss, and isn't in a relationship.
Family: Harper's parents are Debbie Ellis, a Muggle, who is 39 years old, and Martin Ellis, also a Muggle, who is 42 years old. Debbie has brown hair and green eyes, and works at the beach cafe Sand Dunz. Martin has brown hair and blue eyes, and is Head of Muriwai Surf Lifesaving Club.
She had a little brother (by a year) called Ronan Ellis. Brown-haired, same weird eyes as Harper, Muggleborn like herself. He was a member of the Club same as Harper, and was sorted into Gryffindor. In the holidays, after his first year of Hogwarts, he fell off his surfboard and hit his head, then drowned. He was twelve years old when he died, and Harper remembers him every day.
Harper also has a little sister London Ellis, who is younger than her by seven years.
