you've got a piece of me, AND HONESTLY MY LIFE WOULD SUCK, WOULD SUCK, WITHOUT YOU
It seemed like forever since Riley had seen Kalani, though their personalities were completely different
they still seemed to get on extrememly well. Apart from the usual 'sisterly' fights. It was hard on Riley
having her twin sister and almost the only person she completely trusted, attend a school on the other
side of the world, but they had both decided it was best for the both of them to be separated at times.
But today was the day they would finally catch up again, exams were finally over and the timing was
perfect as their seventeenth birthday had rolled around soon after. So with her hair loose and a touch
of makeup, the new seventeen year old stepped out onto the streets of New Zealand and anxiously
awaited the arrival of Lani from Beauxbatons. As she waited patiently on the park bench, Riley twirled
a piece of sandy blonde hair around her finger, the other hand on her bag that held inside it her sister's
birthday present, she was excited to see what Kalani had gotten her and hoped that her twin sister liked
the present she had chosen for her. Though seventeen might have seemed like a big deal to most teens,
Riley couldn't think of any way she would rather spend it than quietly with her sister, advising her mother
not to organize a big party. Especially as she couldn't think of anyone in particular she would choose to
invite after her break up with Sam the blonde had moped around Hogwarts in a not so desirable fashion,
leaving her wondering if anyone would want to be around such a dark cloud. There had been many a
time that semester that Riley had wished she had the attitude of her twin sister, wishing that she hadn't
cared so much for the blue eyed wonder, but there was no point in dwelling on it, there were much more
important things for her to think about today, as she looked down at her watch, where could she be?
Just as Riley turned to see if there was possibly another park bench that Kalani could have ended up at,
there she was, it was as though the seventeen year old was looking in the mirror as an identical blonde
haired, hazel eyed girl stared right back at her. "LANI!" Riley squealed, almost jumping on her sister as
her arms wound tightly around her identical slim waist. "I've missed you so much" she exclaimed, the
pair had kept in contact via letter, but it wasn't the same, especially since they had spent half of their
short lives together. "So," she said questioningly, "Have you got anything for me..?" she asked, though
she didn't think she would have to, it was their birthday afterall. Motioning towards the park bench, she
took a seat and put her hand on the bag containing Kalani's present, waiting for her sister to join her.
kalani ingrid missed her dear twin, riley may and was glad that they wer
e able to see one another before they had to take part in family events
for the summer break. it was so difficult being away from riley and she o
ften thought of transferring to hogwarts so that they could be together b
ut the prospect of eventually hating riley was frightening for kali. being a
t hogwarts would be a completely different experience than attending be
auxbatons, kalani was sure, but she had friends, a title and there she w
as kalani alexandra and not riley alexandra's twin sister. to kalani, her i
ndependence was everything. but now, kalani and riley were together an
d a personalities were not an issue and it was a good thing too because
lani certainly had missed riley and her dramatic ways, even if she had b
een filled in through the written word.
kalani walked towards the park bench that the sisters had decided to me
et, playing with her necklace, which had become a nervous tick over the y
ears, while she walked towards the meeting place and when she saw the m
atching blonde locks, the sixteen seveenteen-year-old saw her sister and
squealed with her, "riley!" she laughed as riley said the exact thing that w
as floating around on her own tongue and she nodded in agreement. as ri
ley asked if lani had anything for her, a thinly shaped eyebrow perked upw
ards curiously. "i missed you riles, but i just got your christmas present, i'm
not going to get you something every time we see each other." she chuckled
lightly at her sister, riley sure was funny. a present just for being apart, sure
their family was wealthy but kalani sure wasn't.
taking a seat beside riley, kalani squinted her hazel eyes as the sun's rays d
anced on her face that was paled from the european winter, instead of how ta
nned riley seemed to be because of the new zealand sun that kalani would co
me to appreciate during her vacation and miss when she was back at school.
another thing that kali would miss, wearing dresses and not freezing to death!
the violet dress hugged kali's curves gently and she was pleased to feel the w
armth of the sun on her bare arms, as well as the soft, summer breeze blowing
through her straight hair. kalani alexandra loved the summer time and she could
enjoy it with her twin sister and mom.
you've got a piece of me, AND HONESTLY MY LIFE WOULD SUCK, WOULD SUCK, WITHOUT YOU
As her sister arched her eyebrow, Riley arched hers identically back. Of course it was almost christmas,
and as usual they would give oneanother gifts, and they didn't always have to get the other a present
everytime they saw eachother, but it seemed as though Lani wasn't letting on about something, and the
only conclusion that Riley could draw was that she was tricking her. So subtly looking behind the wooden
bench, the seventeen year old pouted her lightly glossed lips and looked back at her sister. Where could
she have hidden the present? It seemed bizzare not to just give it to her, but Riley wouldn't have put it
past Kalani, in fact it seemed like just the sort of thing the goofy teenager would do. The blonde had to
admit that she had missed her sister, though she was different, definately not as melodramatic, Riley
loved having her around, she never failed to make her laugh, even at the worst of times. Riley chuckled
lightly back, if it was a game her twin sister wanted, then she was ready to play. "So, met any cute guys
over in France?" she asked her sister, her eyes straying from the identical gaze as they searched for all
of the places in a which a present could possibly be hidden. "You must have met at least one.." her light
voice rang as it was followed by a laugh, knowing too well her sister wasn't completely interested in guys
as she had been lately. It was early in the day and their mother wasn't expecting them home for at least
another hour, and the bubbly seventeen year olds sure did have quite alot to catch up on in that time.
"So I see you're loving the New Zealand weather" Riley said, followed by a slip of her tongue, she was
only taunting her sister for staying in France instead of in New Zealand with her. Though she knew that
Kalani had made the right decision, they had to be individuals at times. In fact it was quite a relief to
think that not even Sam or Ari knew that Riley had a sister, let alone an identical twin, yet some people
would think it rather odd. "I do love your dress though..." she added, with a cheeky smile, her mother
had bought her the very same one, but it had remained unworn in the closet, the hazel eyed girl always
preferred trackpants or shorts to dresses, despite how the dresses would have suited her, which was
evident on Lani. Running her hands through her blonde hair Riley smiled back sweetly at Kalani, and
waited for her to gush on all of the gossip at Beauxbatons, and for her to tell all on her own school.
kalani looked at riley, utterly confused why she seemed so... surprised
at what she had said. then again, riley was of another kind. as riley as
ked about boys, the prefect rolled her eyes. "all ways predictable, ri,"
she teased, giving a wink before answering honestly, "water, water ev
erywhere but not a drop to drink." yes it was true, there were guys every
where but they either had girlfriends or kalani was not interested in them,
but it mattered not to her. she was preoccupied with things of higher mat
ters than a fairytale ending. "what about you? over that... dan? pan?" kal
ani paused to think of riley's ex-boyfriend's name but couldn't remember it,
not that it was important to the question. "...that guy you were dating yet?"
for riley's sake kalani hoped so because if over the break there was one co
mplaint that came from riley's lips about guys, she was going to give her a
good smack. lani hated that riley was hurt by some guy and knew that if s
he wanted to avoid the hurt herself, it was safer to avoid focusing on mat
ters of the heart, such as romantic love. this was why her independence w
as important to her, if she did not have herself she would just have to dep
end on seeking approval just as kalani thought her sister did with the oppo
site sex. being of the fairer sex, lani felt no need to prove herself to anyone
but herself as she believed that women had the power over men, despite men
believing otherwise. and until that power was taken away from her, by choice
or by the final act of life, she felt no need to give herself to someone just for
love. it was only a chemical reaction of the brain, after all.
as riley commented on kalani's love of the warm weather, she nodded and smil
ed pleasurably. the sun was greatly missed in the winter because lani stayed
by non-natural light to avoid the cold at all costs. it seemed that she was mo
re like a cold-blooded creature than a warm-blooded because she was nearly
always cold when she wasn't in the sun and winter just happened to be that
time of year. this was why kali always thought of moving to australia or calif
ornia in the united states. but kalani knew that she would miss riley more th
an she already had, which was a lot, even if they decided to be seperate for
the sake of their own sanity. "yeah i like it too. i wish mom would get us at t
he very least different coloured dresses or clothes though. we don't want to
look too matching. that's too prom look for me," kalani rambled with the ti
niest smile hinting on her lips at the end of her small speech. riley really was
not the kind to wear dresses so even if they had gotten different ones, kali
would probably end up stealing it from riley anyway. riley tended to be the
tom-boy of the pair, although not by much.
you've got a piece of me, AND HONESTLY MY LIFE WOULD SUCK, WOULD SUCK, WITHOUT YOU
"I'm not that predictable" Riley replied, though her cheeks grew red as she said it, it was a shame her
sister hadn't met any guys suitable for her to date, it was just the thing Riley needed to be distracted
from her own love life, which was pretty much non existent at the time. As Kalani teased her by trying
to remember his name Riley pushed her lightly in a playful manner, "Sam." she said sheepishly "Not that
I remember or anything," she said, as her cheeks only grew redder at the thought of her boyfriend ex boy
friend with that pretty little Beauxbaton. "Boys are like bubblegum, right?" she added with a wink, it was
what Lani had always told her, though she hadn't always believed it, lately she had tried her best to. As
Lani commented on how their mother seemed bent on buying them matching outfits, Riley rolled those
hazel orbs, it might have been cute when they were children, but they were seventeen now, and she was
only hoping they hadn't gotten matching presents again this year. But it could be worse, Riley couldn't
imagine Kalani going to Hogwarts, though she constantly missed her twin sister, it would be odd to have
someone identical to her wandering the castle, however fun it might sound to trick people into thinking
they were seeing double. As their mother had always said, together they were double the trouble, just
what Hogwarts needed. Riley could tell by the mirrored smile across from her that these holidays were
going to be great, much better than the last ones, the blonde couldn't imaging turning up on Arianna's
doorstep again, especially not with her awkward cousin around, however intruiging Falcon may have
been. "Mom wants us to choose a cake, by the way." she said with a light chuckle, it seemed just a little
baby-ish to be choosing an over designed cake for their seventeenth birthday, but they would do it all
the same, it could even be fun, Riley thought to herself as she let the sun shine down on her tanned skin.
Turning around on the seat Riley peeked behind the bench and just under it, her hazel eyes darting back
and forward. "Come on Laniiii..." she pleaded, "Where is it?" she asked in her sweet little voice, as Riley
jumped up from the seat and looked over towards the bush, her present couldn't be in there, could it? It
seemed a little far fetched, but the seventeen year old hadn't managed to find it yet. Sitting back on the
bench she looked back at her twin who's face didn't seem to give away any clues at all as to where she
had hidden her birthday present, she wasn't going to tell her anytime soon so turned to her twin sister
and decided she wouldn't give Kalani her gift until she had recieved hers. "So, what's the gossip over in
France then?" she asked curiously, there was always something going on at Beauxbatons, and similarly
at Hogwarts too. "There's a girl at Hogwarts, she's in seventh year and she's having a Death Eater's
baby" she said pausing for effect on the news that had been travelling around Hogwarts near the end of
the year, there must have been something interesting going on at Beauxbatons for Kalani to tell her.
kalani rolled her eyes playfully as riley teased her by repeating a phrase
that had been spoken only to reassure her sister that there was no point
in being hung up on that boy, sam. as riley told kalani that they had to ch
oose a cake, she wondered for what, so her bottom lip curled into her mou
th and her eyebrows pushed together, causing a thin crease in her forehea
d. since when did they have cake for christmas? that was just strange. per
haps pumpkin pasties, but a cake? this was not the most peculiar thing tho
ugh. riley's plead for something just aided in her true confusion of what her
sister was talking about. she didn't think that it was their mom's birthday,
so why would there be a cake? perhaps there were people coming over fo
r the holidays and their mom just wanted to be formal, that wouldn't surp
rise the blonde. then riley did another strange thing and it made kalani blu
sh. her sister was just trying to embarrass her now, wasn't she? "riles!" sh
e scolded, trying to get her back to the park bench because lani might be
goofy but riley was just acting like she should be in a straight jacket. than
kfully riley did sit down before kalani had to leave or something because p
eople were giving the twins sideways glances. "gossip?" kalani repeated h
esitantly, she had never liked hearing gossip about her after it had gone a
ll around and so she didn't like to spread it, unlike her sister who seemed to
enjoy it a great deal. but the gossip that she had shared, well that was un
ignorable. "merlin's beard!" there were no pregnancies that she knew of at
beauxbatons but there was a rumor that kalani couldn't keep inside, espec
ially after riley had shared something that intense! "okay so you remember
the nurse? the really hot one that all the girls wanted?" she said cheekily,
winking at her sister because she knew that at one time riley had preten
ded to be hurt just to see him. who could blame her though, he sure was
a looker. "he's supposedly dating a student!" kalani felt that it was a little
gross, even if the girl was in her seventh year student.
kalani twirled a strand of hair between her fingers while she waited for riley's
response to this news, knowing that she would probably be upset that it had
not been her, because he really was hot. she was sure that if kalani had been
a few years older or he was a few years younger, she would have been all over
that like a fat kid on a smartie. "so tell me, how is hoggies? still better than little
old beauxbatons?"
you've got a piece of me, AND HONESTLY MY LIFE WOULD SUCK, WOULD SUCK, WITHOUT YOU
For some reason Kalani was acting embarrassed as Riley desperately searched for her birthday present,
she was beginning to think that she really hadn't got anything, she seemed even more confused at the
mention of choosing a cake, they always had one on their birthday, surely the blonde hadn't forgotten it
in her travels, gotten mixed up with the time zones or something like that? "Do you think that we should
have candles this year, or are we too old for that now?" Riley joked, they were seventeen afterall, and
putting that many candles on one cake was probably some sort of a fire hazard. Her hazel eyes lit up at
the mention of the nurse at Beauxbatons, he sure was a hunk of spunk, not that she was to say, he was
too old for them, but that didn't stop her conveniently visiting Lani to have a peek. "Really? What I'd give
to be that student!" she exclaimed, he was a catch, that was for sure, despite his age, which really only
sweetened the deal for Riley, her experiences at Hogwarts had only made her almost completely sworn
off of teenage boys, they were much more trouble than they were worth. Swinging her legs lightly, as
her legs didn't quite comfortably rest on the ground, Riley pondered it all, but only just for a moment.
The mention of Hogwarts brought her right back into the conversation, as she wondered what other news
there was about her little old school, Lani also mentioned Beauxbatons, of course Riley thought of her
school as just that little bit better than hers, it was just that natural sibling rivalry, because Beauxbatons
really did suit her sister, and she was proud of her becoming a prefect, Riley wasn't ever on her very best
behaviour so she wasn't expecting to recieve her very own prefect badge. "Hoggies is great, though we
haven't had many games this year," she mused, she was missing quidditch badly, she loved being seeker
and she thought she had a real shot of becoming co-captian of the team next year, unfortunately that
meant that her right hand man would be Sam, only complicating things. "We're still going to kick your butt
at the Tri-Wizard tourney" she added, she was just a little confident that even without regular practices
that her team would beat Beauxbatons. "Will you still love me if we win?" she asked her sister jokingly.
"candles for what?" kali asked, she really had no idea what her sister was
talking about and wished she would just come out with it. it would be easier
for the pair of them. then maybe kalani would know why riley was looking in
bushes and begging for things that made no sense. "riley!" kalani giggled, "you're only sixteen. geez! he's practcally ancient!" laughing once more
at her sister's antics, it seemed like their roles had switched. usually kalani
was the one making silly jokes and riley was the one just starring at guys.
then again, it was on the topic, so riley's character didn't stray too much
but kalani loved her for it.
"that's a shame, you're so good at quidditch," she complimented, feeling
as if her sister could be a quidditch professional if they got more air time,
which she hoped that they would for her, should riley want to go down t
hat rather glamorous path. "i didn't know there was gonna be one?" lani
said truthfully. "mom wouldn't ever let us enter. she'd kills us before
whatever creature we would fight could," she said with a laugh. fam
ily was funny sometimes. others, not so much, but luckily for kalani
and riley that all seemed to be in the past and with their biological fa
ther, whoever that was. but who he was didn't interest lani one iota,
so it really was all laughs between the alexandra's.
