Jeremy sat in his dorm room for a long while staring at the paper on the desk before him. He'd thought the idea of getting a new quill-pal from one of the wizarding schools was pretty cool, but now he wasn't so sure. He'd chosen a slip of parchment at random and now was expected to write to some person named Vixcen over at Beauxbatons.

Hoping that the person could read in English because he didn't know a lick of French, Jeremy finally put his quill to paper and began to scratch out a letter. His penmanship had not improved much over the years and his spelling was still pretty bad, but Jeremy was just pleased that he was making progress on his letter. When it was done, Jeremy didn't even bother proofreading it. He took it straight to Scaling and wished her luck.
Dear Vixcen,

Hi. My name is Jeremy and I'm a sixth year at Hogwarts New Zealand. I joined this quill-pal thing in my school and I figur you did too since I got your name. I'm a prefect here. Do you have those at your school? We're sort of in charge if keeping students from our house in line. I'm in Ravenclaw by the way. Oh, and I play quidditch. Do you?

HNZ is a pretty cool school. Do you like Beaubattins? What sort of stuff do you guys do for fun?

-Jeremy

Vicxen signed up to receive a quil-pal only so she could keep busy and not think about her deceased mother. It had been hard to talk to her friends. Her routine was to get up, make it through the day and go back to sleep. Then to repeat that over and over everyday. Vicxen was somewhat excited about getting a quil-pal.

When Vicxen got her letter she was somewhat disappointed. Spelling was a big thing for Vicxen. She didn't mind the handwriting. After a few reads she understood what Jeremy, her new pal, was trying to say. She was very good at English, but her thick French accent got in the way. She smiled as she sent off her letter to Jeremy. She thought this was really going to be fun.
Dear Jeremy,

My name is Vicxen. It is spelled with the 'c' before the 'x'. I am a fifth year at Beauxbatons. I hope that writing to you will be fun. I believe we have prefects here at Beauxbatons too, but I do not pay much attention to them. I can keep myself in check. I have heard that HNZ has different houses. They are Gryffindor, Ravenclaw(like you), Huffleduff, and Salazar. Excuse me if I have messed up any of the names. I do not like flying. It is sort of a securty issue for me, but my brother on the other hand is a Quidditch player for the Quibberon Quafflepunchers. His name is Victor. I don't know if you've heard of him.

Beauxbatons is fun I guess. Most of the girls here gossip, start drama and talk about boys, but I am not interested in that. I am sort of a health freak. I go running every morning before classes and then I manage to make it through my school day. After classes are over I run again, take a nap for about an hour, and do my homework. Nothing very exciting you see. I am sure HNZ is much more fun than Beauxbatons. What do you do for fun other than Quidditch at HNZ?

Jeremy saw Avalon swooping down towards him just as he was finishing up some porridge one morning. He took the letter off and fed the owl a bit of toast before getting up to leave the Great Hall. As he left, the Ravenclaw prefect opened up the letter and began to read. Jeremy was used to having his spelling corrected by now, so it didn't bother him that Vicxen thought to correct him. He'd be pretty upset too if someone misspelled his name. Stuffing the letter into his pants pocket, Jeremy quickly forgot about it. It wasn't until he was changing into his pajamas much later on that day, that his hands passed over his pocket and he realized something was inside. With a bewildered expression that quickly turned into a knowing one, Jeremy pulled the letter out and thought about writing back. He was just too sleepy to do so, however, and he went to bed, thinking that he'd right back in the morning.

Since he had the day off the next day, Jeremy woke up much later than normal and took a piece of parchment with him as he headed down to breakfast. Once he'd gotten a few bites of eggs into his stomach, he turned his attention to his letter.
Hi Vicxen,

Hope you are doing well over there in France. I heard it's been raining a lot over there lately.

You are right. HNZ does have different houses, and you almost have the names right too. We have Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Slytherin, though Salazar is the first name of that house's founder.

I have a couple of friends who don't fly for anything, so I understand. I actually don't follow professional quidditch all that much. I've been to a few games, but I don't really follow any specific team. That's really cool that your brother plays quidditch though. Do you get nervous watching him fly?

Hmm...other than quidditch, I spend a lot of time studying. Boring, right? But, I'm in 6th year and have NEWTs next year so there is always a lot of work to do. I heard that in Beauxbatons, the students take their OWLs in sixth year so I guess you'll see what I mean next year. I spend some time patrolling the halls as part of my prefect duties too, and when we're allowed I head into the village to hang out.

Vicxen woke up not expecting it to be raining outside. This messed up her schedule, and it put her in a bad mood. Her bad moods were actually horrible moods. When she received a letter from a very familiar looking owl she was pleased. It was Jeremy's letter. It was still morning, and she had quite a busy day ahead of her. She quickly wrote her letter, and she still made sure it was her best handwriting, and she still put all her effort into it. This was the only fun thing she was going to do all day.
Hello Jeremy,

I am doing very well. I hope you are doing okay too. Remember that schedule I told you about? Yeah, it got messed up today because of the rain.

I am happy to know I was close. I hear Ravenclaw's are very smart. Is that true? I wonder what house I would be sorted in if I were to go to Hogwarts New Zealand. What is it like getting sorted? Was it scary?

I get so nervous when I watch him fly. He does all these crazy stunts, and it is very scary for me. I have wanted to tell him to stop flying a few times, but I do not want to stop him from doing what he loves to do. It would be like him telling me not to eat healthy. If that is a good example. Probably not. What position do you play on your team?

Lately I have been studying like crazy. I have been so bored, so I decide to study. I sometimes write poems too, but I am not too creative with those. Patrolling the halls? That sounds like a boring duty, but I guess you have to keep kids in check, right? I hear there is a point system at your school. How does that work?

-Vicxen Dodge

P.S. Is this owl yours? What is it's name?
Vicxen gave the owl a treat before sending it off again with her letter to Jeremy. Now all that was left was to get through another day of school.

It wasn't until Jeremy was cleaning up a mess of papers on his writing desk in his dorm room that he came across the letter that Vicxen had sent him over a week ago. Closing his eyes, Jeremy felt horrible that he'd forgotten to write back. He pushed all of the papers to the side and sat at his desk to write her a quick letter.
Hi Vicxen!

I'm so sorry it's been a while since I wrote you last. To answer your question, Ravenclaws are smart but some of us are also easily distracted and have poor memories (Yes, I'm talking about myself : P ). Sorting was actually really exciting. The scariest part is having the whole school watching you as it happens.

That's totally understandable. I wouldn't be able to stop my loved one from doing what they loved either. I play Chaser, and I'm also one of the co-Captains. The other co-Captain is leaving this year though, so we're trying to figure out if I should take the team over by myself or we should promote someone else.

The points are based on how we perform in lessons and around the school. We get housepoints for our house for doing good things and lose points for doing bad things. So far, Gryffindor is in the lead but we've won the past few years so I think we'll pull it out in the end.

And yes, she's mine. Her name is Avalon. I'm not sure that she likes me very much, but she's pretty friendly to other people.

- Jeremy Thorne

Sealing the letter as he walked out of the dormitory, Jeremy quickly made his way up to the owlery to send the letter off before curfew.

Vicxen received her letter from Jeremy while she had severe, what Muggles called, strep throat and a fever. She had gone to the nurse, and she had not been able to help much. She gave her a potion to stop her throat from hurting, but it always wore off, and the pain came back with a vengeance. She had been sick for about 3 days, so she was not mad that it took Jeremy so long to send her a reply. Vicxen got a piece of parchment, and sat at her desk all bundled in covers so she could write Jeremy back.
Jeremy,

I have been sick for the past few days. I did not even notice you hadn't sent me a letter. I have been so focused on getting better, so I could catch up on my studies. I hope the Sorting Hat you guys have doesn't say anything embarrassing.

Wouldn't there be try-outs if it was a situation like that? I would think there would be, but I don't keep up with how that kind of stuff works. If you feel like you can take over the team then you should earn you house as many points as you can. :).

So it is like a year long competition? That is very interesting. If Ravenclaw and Gryffindor are that close this year then you should earn your house as many points as you can! :)

I think Avalon likes you. Maybe she is just giving you tough love. My brother and I are awesome examples at that. This is all I can write for now, so bonne chance at Ravenclaw getting ahead of Gryffindor.

sincèrement,
Vicxen Dodge
She gave the letter to Avalon. She watched as the bird took off, and then she got back in bed.

After spending about an hour studying, Jeremy figured that he deserved a bit of a break. He took out a slip of parchment that was holding the place in one of his other books and opened it up, finally allowing himself to read the letter that his quillpal had written him. He smiled as he read it and then reached for a piece of parchment, hoping to scratch out a quick reply before getting back to some more studying.
Hey Vicxen,

I hope that you're feeling better by the time you get this note. I'm definitely doing my best to earn my house as many points as I can, which is why I've been studying like crazy. Well, that and I have exams coming up soon. I think I'll be ready for my exams. The only one I'm really worried about is Arithmancy. That is certainly the most difficult class that I take. I guess I'm a little worried about Defense against the dark arts as well, but only because our professor is an insanely difficult grader. Which electives do you take?

Things at the school have gotten crazy this week. Someone published a magazine filled with stories about what the other students have been up to. People are now quite suspicious of each other and angry and embarassed about the things that were written. I got off relatively unscathed, thankfully. I was only mentioned once, in an article about quidditch saying that I didn't really play that hard. And, I think there was another mention of me, but it didn't have my name attached so I'm hoping most people didn't realize it was about me. A couple of my friends had really horrible articles written about them though, and a couple of the professors were even mentioned. Crazy, huh?

I'll probably be studying like crazy for the next few weeks, so I probably won't have time to write again until break. Do you have any plans?

Good luck on your exams!

Jeremy Thorne
Jeremy attached the note to his owl's leg and watched her soar off into the night.

Vicxen started to feel much better. She now only had a minor cough and sometimes a headache. She was excited for the upcoming break. She would be in New Zealand with her brother. She thought it was a great opportunity, but unfortunately she had to get through whole bunch of exams first. After finishing a project for Ancient Runes she took out Jeremy's letter.
Hey Jeremy,

I am feeling much better now. I take Ancient Runes and Muggle Studies. I just finished a huge project for Ancient Runes, so when exams come up I think I will be pretty much set. My mother was a Muggle Born, so I grew up around a lot of Muggle things. I am only taking that class so I can get a deeper understanding of how Muggles live without magic. I am not too worried about my upcoming exams, but Transfiguration was always a hard subject for me.

That is horrible! That person must have a lot of time on their hands. I am very glad that you went unharmed. Wouldn't it be bad if a prefect got mentioned in that magazine? I think that would make professors think twice. That person has a lot of nerve mentioning a professor in their stupid magazine. I suggest you be very careful about what you do from now on, but you are probably already doing that.

I am going to be in New Zealand for the break. Isn't that great? It is mainly because my brother. He has really started to like New Zealand, so he is dragging me there with him. Maybe we should meet up?

I wish you the best of luck on your exams as well!

Vicxen Dodge
Vicxen gave the letter to the owl and watched it fly off before she got back to studying.

Jeremy was about halfway through his exams and he was more than ready for a bit of a break. Taking out a piece of parchment, he scratched out a quick note to Vicxen. By the time he was finished, he was ready to get back to studying for his final exam.
Hi Vicxen,

I'm glad you're doing better. Good luck on your transfiguration exam. I'm not that great in that class either, but I took that exam last semester. I take Muggle Studies too. I love that class! We've gone on some pretty cool field trips to San Francisco and to a muggle hotel.

There were actually several prefects mentioned in the magazine, which is probably part of the reason why the professors were not pleased about it. Thanks for the advice. I'm definitely being more cautious now.

That does sound great. I've just earned my apparation license so maybe I'll apparate here sometime in the break. I'm actually from the U.S. so I usually spend most of my break there, spending some time with my mom and dad.

Well, I've got to get back to studying,

Jeremy

Vicxen was a bit late sending her response to Jeremy. She had been studying hard for exams. The letter completely slipped her mind. She pushed everything aside and took out a piece of parchment.
Jeremy

I apologize for my late response. I got so caught up in studying that I forgot. Je suis désolé. I hope that I did great on all of my exams. How did you think you did on your exams?

Apparition license? That sounds like so much fun! I hope you are careful though. Apparating is huge responsibility. I can't wait until I can take the test. Then my brother won't have to take me everywhere.

Whoa. The United States? What is it like there? My sister visited the U.S. and said it was fantastic. I really want to see the statue of Liberty. I hear that it is very pretty.
