Nerissa was lonely to put it plainly. As it was nearly fall many of her friends were leaving Black Lake for warmer waters. She knew many would be staying as she did, but she was going to miss the mer-folk leaving for the cold season. Swimming deep under the lake the fish she normally would have spent her time with were all busy making preparations for when the lake froze over. Being as Nerissa was still so young in mermaid terms she wasn't required to help much. So with nothing to do Nerissa found her fins pushing her towards shore. She loved laying halfway on the beach and conversing with the students. She loved to here about the progress of potions and hoped one day there would be one that would allow her on land, if even for a little while. Peaking her head above the surface she was sure she looked like nothing more than a student taking a swim, but there was so much more to her lower half than legs. Staying close to the waters edge Nerissa felt a cool breeze, a promise of the colder weather to come. It was still warm for fall, and Nerissa knew she wouldn't have many more days like this.

Erik wasn't supposed to be skipping Transfiguration, but then he wasn't supposed to do a lot of things. Dad had threatened not to buy him a broomstick if he didn't improve on his D average from first year. With mostly Ps and As this term, Erik figured ducking out of a lesson or two wasn't going to hurt him. He wasn't all that excited to turn kiwis into Quaffles- or whatever the professor had them doing- anyway.

He found himself at the lakefront, with his knees pulled into his chest and toes buried in the sand. Then he noticed another student in the water. She didn't appear to be wearing much. Perhaps she was a few clams short of a chowder?

"Hey, isn't that cold?" Erik shouted.

Nerissa had been humming to herself so she hadn't really noticed when the boy had walked up, she was to absorbed in figuring out the right notes. Her voice always sounded different above water. She didn't really notice him until he yelled if she was cold. This puzzled Nerissa for a moment until she realized humans were cold blooded and the lake at this point in the year must have been quite the shock. "Nope, I'm cold-blooded!" She yelled back to the boy. She swam closer to him not sure if he had seen her tail yet. Either way she wasn't going to point it out or flash it around yet sometimes it scared off the humans and she liked to talk to them. Even as she neared a few feet away from the shore her fins didn't meet the bottom it was very deep all the way around the lake, even at this distance. She smiled at the student, "My name is Nerissa, what's your's?" It always bought Nerissa much joy to talk to the children from the school, it had always been her wish to be like them. But she also enjoyed being a mermaid she loved the water and the beauty of her tail.

Cold-blooded, like a snake? Erik grinned. The girl seemed too friendly to be a Slytherin, but then again, he'd never met the mean ones Dad always talked about.

"I'm Erik," he told the girl, shivering at the thought of diving into the lake. He wondered if Nerissa was using a charm or something to keep warm. "What year are you in?" Erik couldn't really tell Nerissa's age.

Nerissa couldn't help but laugh at the boys name, Erick like in the little mermaid. "Nice to meet you Erik." She smiled at him. He then continued to ask her what year she was in and she grinned at him, "Oh I don't go to the school." She hoped that he would stay once she showed him, "You see I really am cold blooded, I'm a mermaid." She lifted her golden tail out of the water and wiggled her fin for effect. She swam up into the shallow water right near the edge so her full tail was viable. "Don't worry I won't drown you like some of the other mermaids do I promise." She said glancing back towards the middle of the lake. She could understand why sailors were so scared of mermaids the mean ones would sing and drown them if they got the chance.
