Fourth Years Lesson Two [The Imperius Curse]

Professor Adler was nervous for this lesson. This would be the first time she was expected to teach one of the three unforgivable curses, and to demonstrate what they did. As far as Geo was concerned, there was no exception for casting one of those, even if it was as part of the curriculum. Professor Waldgrave may have had permission from the Hogwarts Board of Governors and the Ministry to cast the spells on the students, but Professor Adler thought they'd made the wrong choice. It was quite clear that anyone who used those spells would be sent to Azkaban, and there were no reasons good enough why they should be performed in a classroom, nor on students.

Geo had no doubt that some of the fourth years that she was waiting for would disapprove the way today would be more theoretical than practical. But the former Hufflepuff would rather her students thought her lesson as boring than unnecessarily harmful. She recalled reading a note from one of her first years, asking why they were even learning about the curses if they couldn't use them, but Professor Adler knew it would be just as important to show them what they did so that they knew how to defend themselves. "Good morning everyone," the blonde smiled, although her eyes weren't in it. She stood at the head of the room, rather more solemn than usual. "Today we'll be learning about one of the three unforgiveable curses," she told them.

"The Imperius Curse may seem at first like the least dangerous spell, however you'll see why in a moment why it's called forbidden." Professor Adler took a few steps backwards, raising her wand to cast a scene in front of her. After a few seconds, the shapes began to take shape, the blue outlines becoming clearer. It was like a hologram in the center of the room, depicting a memory, one that Geo had chosen to show from her career as Auror.

A man was hiding out of sight, the brick wall shading him from the public eye, not that there had been a great many number of people in the street that night. The man raised his wand at an unsuspecting woman, who had been simply in the wrong place at the wrong time, passing by a jewelry store. "Imperio," the man had whispered. The woman's demeanor suddenly shifted. It was subtle at first, but she seemed to relax. "Break the window, and unlock the door," he man had continued to instruct her. Without debate, the woman turned and with no hesitation behind her actions, smashed the glass to the store. She reached in, unlocking the front door with ease despite the glass tearing at her clothes, until the door popped open.

"The Imperius Curse allows someone to take complete control of another person," the blonde explained. "Can anyone give me a reason why this is dangerous?" She hoped her fourth years would have a good understanding. She chose one of them with their hand in the air, nodding at their answer. "That's correct. If someone can control what you're doing, then you have no accountability for your actions. The woman from the scene was arrested but no had memory of what had taken place and couldn't recall breaking into the store. She was lucky Aurors had been around to witness it but there have been a number of witches and wizards who have been blamed for other's actions while under the Imperius Curse. Who can tell me another?" Geo continued, choosing a second student. "The woman tore her sleeve on the glass of the window, yes. She didn't do this by choice and couldn't stop herself from doing it. Therefore, you'll see that the Imperius Curse can be used in multiple ways to conflict damage." The scene at the front of the class disappeared.

"Currently there is no one specific method of stopping the effects of this curse, but it's good to be able to recognise that there are people out there who will take advantage of its usage. Having a strong mind also means you're less likely to be affected although there is certainly no guarantee willpower will be enough on its own," It was hard, to tell the students about a spell but not give them a concrete way to resolve it. Geo felt like a failure at the end of these classes, but her role of protecting them was futile. "There's no homework for today's lesson, but if you have any questions about what we've looked at today feel free to come and talk to me before leaving." The woman let them go, hoping they weren't feeling as useless as she was.

Winnie walked into the defence against the dark arts classroom. She glanced at the professor and had to stop herself from rolling her eyes at the somber mood, because they were unforgivables and she could get not being happy about it, neutrality would work. Winnie nodded as the professor let them watch a memory of the spell, which was despite the subject matter a little boring. She was glad when it was over and then took some notes from what the professor was saying about it, but was glad when the lesson was shortly wrapped up and Winnie was able to leave the room.

For some reason Defence Against the Dark Arts was one of the lessons Lili felt most uncomfortable with this year. Rationally thinking it was probably due to the heavy nature of the things they'd be learning, but perhaps there was something more to it. However the fourth year couldn't quite pinpoint what it was yet. Taking her seat in the classroom she focused on the Professor at front, waiting as she began the class. The mention of learning about the unforgivables made her shift uncomfortably in her seat, right it was those spells indeed they'd be learning about.

As Professor Adler identified the curse they'd be learning about soon enough what seemed like a memory was cast in the middle of the room. At first Lilith felt a tad bit confused but as the memory played on the confusion washed away and turned into tread. It was one thing learning about these curses in theory and another to see it play out in front of your very eyes. Whether it was just a hologram or actually happening.

As the scene ended in front of them Lili focused back to the Professor who presented them with a question. Hesitating for a moment Lilith eventually raised her hand to answer the question, she'd read the text books so she knew well enough how to answer the question. "As you said, the curse allows the caster complete control over another person which means essentially they can force another person to do whatever they want and that person cannot protest or not do it." It was cruel and the fact that there were people who would use this curse to make other people do their bidding and Merlin knew what else was an unsettling thought. At the end of the lesson Lilith packed her things up, feeling a little bit put off by the thought of witches and wizards out there doing things against their wills because someone decided to use a curse to make them do it. Lilith made her way out of the classroom quickly, focusing on the floor as she walked.
