"Today we’ll be covering two spells — the Amplifying Charm and the Quietening Charm. They are opposites in nature, but both are equally important. Used correctly, they can counter each other, saving you the trouble of relying on Finite."
"The Amplifying Charm will make your voice carry, but don’t think that comes without consequence. Use it for long periods, and your throat will be just as hoarse as if you’d been shouting. The Quietening Charm is the reverse, bringing a voice down to little more than a whisper. Simple spells, but very effective if you know when to use them." Josef's gaze swept the room, and he paused to rest it on a student in the front row. "Tell me, what is the incantation for the Amplifying Charm?"
The student answered, and Josef gave a single approving nod. "Correct. Five points." He turned to another student further back. "And the Quietening Charm?" When the second answer came, he smiled. "Good. Five points to you as well. It seems some of you did your reading."
Drawing his wand from his sleeve, he held it at his side as he spoke. "These charms require no wand movement. You need only point and cast. But pronunciation matters. Fail to say it properly, and you’ll fail to cast it. Repeat after me. Sonorus — ‘soh-NOHR-us.’" He led the class through the word until he was satisfied with the strength of their voices. "Again. Louder. Good. Now, Quietus — ‘KWIY-uh-tus.’ Clearer. Better. Do not forget it."
Satisfied, he gave a sharp gesture toward the benches. "Pair up. You will practice both spells on each other until you can cast them without hesitation." Josef stepped back to allow them room to move, watching as the students found partners and began their attempts.
Josef remained on the floor among them. On occasion, he stopped to correct a wand angle or ask for clearer pronunciation.
By the time the class drew to a close, the room carried the faint echo of amplified and quietened voices. With a flick of his wand, Josef stilled the last of the magic and brought the room back to silence. "That will do. You’ve made progress today. Some of you more than others, but progress nonetheless. Your next task is to continue practicing until these spells come as easily as breathing. That is the only way you’ll have any chance of mastering what comes next." With a wave of his hand, the door swung open. "Dismissed."
