Fourth Years Lesson One

Geo did not like to think about the way she was already into the second portion of her time at Hogwarts, and did what she could to busy herself around the room as she waited for her new set of fourth years to join her. She'd dressed in her regular set of clothes, tight black trousers with a well fitted top, and completing the ensemble with a long floor length jacket over the top. Or at least, she would have if she didn't feel as though she was roasting on a spit while inside the castle. It was summer, so she'd forgone the jacket, and now stood at the front of her class, long blonde braid down her back.

"Welcome in everyone!" She addressed the fourth years once they'd settled down. "My name is Professor Adler, I'm covering for your regular professor, Professor Waldgrave this year," it also meant those continuing the subject after this semester would be taught by non other than her own husband, Professor Cade. "This year might be the hardest you've come across so far," she warned, "We'll be reviewing the Unforgiveable Curses over the next few months. These were mentioned back in your first year, and some of you may have wondered why we even look to teach them if they're unforgiveable," it was a valid argument after all. "This class as I'm sure you're by now aware, teaches you how to defend yourselves against the dark arts. The more you're experienced with all manner of spells, the more equipped you'll be to defend yourself against it." Geo was also aware that Professor Waldgrave was accustomed to using demonstrations on his fourth years, but the former Auror didn't believe that he, nor anyone, was above the rules that would send a witch or wizard to azkaban for their usage. Besides, that was before they even got into the argument about using it on students. The day Geo had found out Noel had used a curse on her step-daughter, wasn't a day she was going to forget in a hurry.

"Can anyone remind me what the three curses are?" She asked the fourth years, choosing one of the students with their hand raised. "Very good! Twenty points to you!" Professor Adler was feeling rather generous in that regard. "Next week, we'll be looking further into the Imperius curse, so I would recommend for homework, having a read through the information you can find ahead of time. That's everything for now!" Geo dismissed them, hoping that they wouldn't feel like they needed to prove themselves next week, when there would be serious spells cast in her classroom.

Alana had heard a lot of things about fourth-year Defence Against the Dark Arts and how it was taught. But all those stories were about Professor Waldgrave; she didn’t know anything about Professor Adler and how she taught it, so maybe things would be different. She made her way into the normal classroom, which had been set up slightly differently to accommodate the new professor’s tastes.

Professor Adler introduced herself and informed them how difficult the class would be for them that semester, as they would be learning about a difficult subject, unforgivable curses. Hopefully, Professor Adler didn’t plan to cast any of them on the students. Alana raised her hand when they were asked what the three curses were. “The killing curse, the cruciatus curse and the imperius curse,” She finished the lesson by taking notes on the rest of what the professor said and once the lesson was over she packed up and made her way out of the classroom.
