Fourth Years, Lesson Four: Using the Switching Spell (swap Slug for Snail)

Edward was the type of man who can spend an age pondering a decision, but once his mind was made up, little to nothing could deter him away from it, and becoming an animagus was no exception. He was now on the second step of the process and realised that it was either now, or wait another month to complete a rather difficult step of carrying a single Mandrake leaf in his mouth for a whole month. He carried on teaching, but his voice was so muffled and he'd learnt from the first and second years to ultilise the board instead. "Goo affernoon, fourf years" his speech was muffled, he pointed to the board for further instruction.

Struggling to speak today, please copy down the following:
  • For today's lesson, we are practicing cross-species switches.
  • We will use living slugs and switch them with snails, which are very similar in both appearance and complexity.
  • Cross-species switches occur when a wizard takes one animal and swaps it out for another.
  • You don't need to know the exact location of what you are switching the two with.
  • Use the same non-verbal technique you employed in the last lesson to swap your slugs and snails.
  • If you cast it properly, your slug will seem to grow its own shell, just like it would with a regular transfiguration spell. You and I both know, however, what is really taking place. It might take a few tries, but I've no doubt you will be able to pull off the spell effectively.
"Take a shlug, and geh started." Edward watched as his students came up to the desk to take a slug, some more stoically than others. Once everyone had theirs he got up to move around, observing their work and lending a helping hand every now and then. Edward usually invited questions at the end of the lesson, but today he did not, and disappeared into his office after dismissing the class.

Homework: RP attendance! Tag @Professor Edward Pirrip if you would like me to interact with your character! (but probably best not to on this occasion).

Edward is becoming an animagus. One step is to carry a single mandrake leaf in his mouth for a month, which he is doing now. Source. Thank you for your patience and I am sorry :)

Apolline walked into the transfiguration classroom and glanced towards the professor at the front of the room. She watched with a frown as he spoke and seemed to struggle to, though did just have the notes ont he board. She took them down, making sure that she didn’t miss any of it, before being able to then watch the spell be done and to do it herself. She took the slug and then pointed her wand at it. She had to concentrate hard, and eventually the two switched. It wasn’t enough time to be able to practice again, but she was pretty pleased she had managed it at all, and knew she could just get more practice in outside of the room.

Kyousuke was a bit confused by the professor's antics, but at least whatever was going on wasn't going to interfere with his ability to get the information he needed. He took down notes and then got started on practicing the spell. Taking a slug and snail, he brought it back to his desk and looked at the putrid invertebrate with a little bit of disdain. His first attempt at the spell wasn't effective - he got distracted last minute by the idea of his wand touching the slug - but as he continued, he got better and better until at last the slug resembled a snail instead, and the snail a slug. He switched them back again, just to prove that he could, and when the lesson was over, went on his way.

Aroha wasn't sure why she took transfiguration but it seemed like a good idea. She held back a giggle as the professor tried to speak - thinking it was a joke. She coughed to cover the laugh and then took note of the blackboard. Interesting, slugs and snails. Aroha went up and got one, taking it back to her seat. She didn't mind creepy crawlies too much so she was fine. She actually managed to get the slug and snail to switch on her first try, much to her pleasure. Aroha let out a small 'whoop!' as the shell of the snail appeared to grow onto the slug. Pretty pleased with her result, she left the classroom in good spirits.
