First Years, Week One [Welcome]

Professor Adler was practically buzzing for another semester at Hogwarts, another chance to meet a new fresh set of faces that joined the school. She'd dressed simply for the first lesson; hair tied back into a braid. It had always been her style to be able to move swiftly when working and being weighed down by too many accessories had never been her style. She secretly hoped that it would reflect the type of work they'd be doing too, and that her students would be more careful in this class than perhaps they were in others. As the first years entered the room, the woman did her best to memorise as many possible, believing that the more personal she could be, the more they'd learn to trust her. Trust was essential in this territory.

"Welcome to your first Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson! Please, take a seat wherever you like today." The blonde was stood at the front of the class, hands clasped together in front of her. The students would have enough to be tending to during their first week of school without also worrying about a seating plan. That would come later. "My name is Professor Adler," she told the group. "Strictly speaking, Professor Adler-Cade, however Professor Cade is my husband. Some of you may know him as the Gryffindor Head of House, and some of you may be taught by him if you follow this subject all the way through until your exam years." Geo began to move a little around the space as she spoke. "Until last 2063 I worked as an Auror, so I've many years' experience working with the Dark Arts, and coming up against the type of witches and wizards that will try to use the Dark Arts for their own gain within our community." This subject was perhaps the most important, at least it was by Professor Adler's standards, given the practical nature they'd be facing. "If anyone ever has any questions about becoming an Auror, you're more than welcome to come and see me in my office at any point."

Professor Adler continued on, "While this subject is excellent for an Auror career, it's not the only reason as to why this subject is important to pay attention to," she looked between the students in front of her, hoping at least some of them would be taking notes. "This is a subject that is designed to protect you and those around you, and if you're able to become confident enough with the spells that they become second nature, you'll be in a good position to defend yourself should you ever need to." Of course, there was always the hope the students wouldn't need to protect themselves, however, should the occasion arise it was always better to be safe than sorry.

"Can anyone give me a brief description of what the Dark Arts entail?" Geo asked the class, before choosing one of the students that had raised their hand. She listened intently to their answer, nodding slowly as they spoke. "That's very good. Many spells within the Dark Arts are intended to do harm, which is why it's very important to be focusing on what you're doing in this room, and watch where you're pointing your wand," she didn't want to be sending a first year to the hospital wing this early on in the semester. "Most of the work you'll do this year will be theoretical, which I realise may not be deemed exciting, but it's important to lay the foundations before we start casting spells." Geo was walking around the desks now, purely because she had too much excitable energy of her own to remain at the front of the room, although her outward demeanour didn't give it away. "We will however, be practising some wand work, and as you progress throughout the years you'll pick up curses, jinxes and hexes, plus the counter-curses to defend yourself."

Professor Adler moved to the front of the room now as it was easier to address the class as a whole, "I know this is your first lesson but I will be setting homework, to get the ball rolling. I would like everyone to submit a question you may have about this particular subject, and I will do my best to answer them. You've got a little bit of time remaining, so have a think about how this subject may influence you. Once you've submitted your question, you can go!" Geo took a seat behind her desk, curious to see what the students would come up with.

As of Y51 my Classroom Policy has been updated, so please do take a look through this document for the current information on expectations, grading and IC interactions.

Danny walked into the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom, super excited about being at Hogwarts NZ. He sat down in a seat in the front of the class, knowing that would provide less distraction. His mother was insistent on him putting his all into his classes, and he knew that good grades would help him with getting a job in the future.

His grandparents had also impressed upon him the importance of doing one's best in school. Danny hadn't known his grandparents until about a year ago, when his mother moved them to New Zealand. While the Westerberg's were not completely pureblooded, and indeed held no position in the Ministry of Magic, his grandparents were far more strict about purity of blood than his mother. Danny didn't put much stock into it - his father had been a muggle and his mother had always spoken highly of him, so surely pureblood didn't matter?

He was so distracted by his inner thoughts that Danny jumped when Professor Adler-Cade started speaking. He shook his head and tried to pay attention. He was interested to note that Professor Adler was married to his Head of House. Danny also took note of the fact that Professor Adler had been a former Auror.

When Professor Adler posed the question, Danny raised his hand hesitantly. She called on him anyway -whether she had noticed his hesitance or not wasn't clear. He cleared his throat and said, "The Dark Arts are spells and rituals whose only purpose is to harm someone else."

He smiled when Professor Adler praised his answer, which faltered a little when it was revealed that they wouldn't be getting into much wand work this year. 'Ah well, we have to start somewhere after all,' he thought to himself. He almost groaned aloud when Professor Adler revealed that they had homework. 'Homework already?' he thought, but settled back into his seat to hopefully finish the homework before his next class.

Homework:
What is the Ministry of Magic's criteria for declaring something as 'Dark Arts'?

Reyna walked into the defence against the dark arts classroom. She had done her hair in two braids and added just the tiniest amount of make up. She was stood beside Dash as they walked in and then pointed to the middle of the room. "you sit there," she half suggested before taking the spot next to her. Her gaze moved to the professor after pulling out a pink quill and some parchment. She listened as the professor spoke, leaning to Dash. "I wonder if she was as boring an auror as she is a professor," Reyna whispered. She just didn't really care about a professor's love life or her years as an auror. it wasn't like she wanted to be an auror. She rolled her eyes as eager people answered the question, but of course did not raise her own. the professor then told them a little about what they'd be doing before letting them leave with a simple assignment. She wrote down a question before heading out of the room.

Was being an auror exciting?

Leo made sure to be one of the first students in class for Defence Against the Dark Arts. He'd heard good things about the Professor from his older sister and the subject was generally one the first year took keen interest in. As he arrived to the class he gave a nod and a wave to Professor Adler before finding a seat. Leo had made sure to ask all about the subject and professor from Lilith, see he wanted to be an Auror. It sounded like it'd be fun and cool and he'd get to help others, had he not been a wizard Leo would have gone for Police, but luckily for him he was a wizard. However he'd not tell Lili about his plans for the future anytime soon.

Focusing on the Professor as she began the lesson the Gryffindor wasn't all that surprised to learn she was the wife of their Head of House. Figures the two DADA Professors would be together. As the woman asked the class a question Leo raised his hand eagerly, but his roommate got to it first. By the end of the class Leo sat down and thought on his question for a bit, he considered a few options because quite frankly there were quite a few things he wanted to ask the woman. Settling on one important one he wrote it down before making his way out of the room.

What do you think is the most important thing one should keep in mind if they wanted to become an Auror?

Cassian took the first empty seat he came across in Defence Against the Dark Arts and gave his full attention to his aunt, Professor Adler. He didn’t want to draw attention to their connection and was glad to see that at school, she went by Adler rather than using her full hyphenated name. Cassian listened as she, along with a student, explained the basic premise of Defence Against the Dark Arts and some of what they could expect. Cassian made some notes based on the lecture part of the lesson, and once it was over, he packed up his things and made his way out of the classroom.

What's the scariest part about being an auror?

Dash arrived to her first defence against the dark arts lesson a step after @Reyna Flores , moving swiftly to take the seat next to her best friend and orientating herself, retrieving her matching pink quill to Reyna's as the lesson began. It wasn't long before she sighed, leaning forward to rest her head in her hand, eyes glazing over with boredom as the professor prattled on about herself and her personal life, before talking about the importance of the subject, as if taking notes all semester and learning theory wouldn't be entirely boring. Holding back both a scoff and a giggle at Reyna's comment, Dash quickly commented back. "Imagine having a professor for a husband, and also being a professor, how lame." She added, stopping herself from adding that surely an Auror had better things to do than teach first years, because of course any good Auror would be out in the world rather than confined to a classroom. Surely the professor mustn't have been a good Auror to begin with if she had to settle for teaching. Dash quickly scribbled down a question for the professor when the lesson ended, and promptly left the room as soon as she could so she and Reyna could do something better with their time.
Is learning the theory of defence against dark magic even important in 2066?
