First Years, Lesson Six

LESSON SIX
Noel was ready for the lesson of today. Instead of giving his lesson in the classroom he had led his students down to the lower levels of the castle for their final Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson of the year. Their final lesson with him was going to be a short one. A semester's worth of teaching three classes was kind of heavy for his first year as an professor. But he liked it, that was the most important thing. And next year it would go even more easy.
But exams were still there too. Besides, this lesson was all about letting the students decide what they wanted to do, he would give them the opportunity to leave and study in the library if they didn't want to practice their wandwork.

''Right, everyone come in, there's plenty of room for everyone,'' Professor Waldgrave said excitingly. It was the last lesson for the first years and they could decide for themselves where they wanted to spend their attention too. ''I'm going to keep things short and simple today. The room we're in right now is the Duelling Chamber and is open to all students. You may freely practice your wandwork here,'' Noel wondered why he had never participated in dueling when he was an student. But he had other stuff like quidditch and classes, leading the brotherhood and later on being an head boy to be busy with. He than waved his hand toward the many dummies and practice targets throughout the room. ''You may also try to duel with other students but keep in mind that professor supervision is required to do so. If you are interested in learning how to duel, you may want to consider joining the Student Defense Association. Hogwarts also gives its students the opportunity to duel one another competitively by organising a school duelling tournament, these are open to second years and above.'' He than told them. ''You are free to use the rest of the class period to prepare for the end-of-semester exam if you want. Feel free to practice your wandwork or leave to study in the library.'' He knew that not everyone wanted to practice the spells they had learned in class this semester, so figured that some of them would leave the Duelling Chamber in favour of studying in the library or somewhere else that was quiet enough. Both parts were important, for the exam.

If some decided to leave here and do whatever they pleased would be their own loss. It wouldn't be his fault if those students failed their end-of-semester exams. ''Remember that the exam will consist of a practical and a written portion, meaning that you will need to study both.'' And with that he let the students do as they pleased while he stayed behind to supervise those that wanted to practice their wandworks.

There was a slight bounce to his step as he arrived to the duelling chamber as instructed. Already this was looking like it was going to be a blast, and the grin on his face only got wider as he looked around at the training dummies and they were given the very simple instructions. Practice their wandwork, or go off to the library and do some boring studying. Well, Miles knew which option he was going for, eagerly grabbing his trusty wand out of his pocket. He ended up spending the whole lesson firing back and forth with the dummies, even if he was already feeling pretty confident in his own skills. This was just extra practice and he was going to make the most of it. By the time the lesson was actually over, Miles felt as though he wasn't done. He wanted to stay for longer and get in some more practice. Though he was starting to get tired, it was fun.

When Autumn found out that her next Defence Against The Dark Arts class would be held in the dueling chamber, she was quite excited. She wondered what the professor had in mind for them. The girl gathered around as her professor started the lesson and explained to the class what they would be doing. Being able to practice wandwork with classmates sounded fun and she couldn't wait to get started. When it came to finding a partner however, she struggled, as everyone had already seemed to find someone so easily. When she saw a familiar face on her own, she decided to speak to her. "Hey, Tess, right? Want to be my partner?" she asked, deciding she should probably talk to her cousin if they were going to be in classes together. The pair of them went back and forth with the stunning spell and Autumn had quite a bit of fun doing this. She was disappointed that the lesson was so short, but definitely planned on going back to the dueling chamber regularly.

As the last week of the semester came around, Tess was not in the mood to participate in school anymore. Her grandfather, whom she had only met a couple of times before, was now gone, and she wasn’t sure how to feel about it. She knew her father was devastated and didn’t understand how he was going back to teaching for the last week. He really was a very brave man. As Tess entered the dueling chamber for her last Defence Against The Dark Arts lesson for the semester, she didn’t even look at the professor as she gathered around with her classmates. They were told to pair up and practice their wand work with each other. Tess wasn't bothered trying to find a partner, and so just stood back, hoping no one would notice her. As a familiar face approached her however, she put on a smile. "Yeah, it's Tess. You're Autumn aren't you?" she said. She had often thought about approaching her but was admittedly a little shy about it. She was glad that she didn't have to try hard to find a partner at least. Autumn was very good at using her wand, and the professor had to be called over a few times to un-stun Tess, but Tess thought she did okay considering. She exited the dueling chamber at the end of the lesson.

Chiro had to admit that it wasn’t much different to any other lesson he’d been to, professors did things they wanted to do and they talked at students rather than actually teaching them anything, not that Chiro really cared about that, since he didn’t really care about his education anyway. He yawned when they were given the option to leave and study on their own. So he decided that he would leave, but he probably wouldn’t study. If someone was going to be silly enough to give him a chance to not study, he was going to take it. Amateurs.

Rowan Chase heard from others that this week would be the easiest week because most of the classes would just end up reviewing. Easy. Rowan had everything he needed in his bag though, so he was off from his dorm to head to the next class. He was a fast walker too because he had a fair bit of energy. Rowan walked in the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom, though they did not linger there for long. They followed the professor down to the Duelling Chamber. They could practice their wandwork there, or they could duel, or they could also leave. He would practice on his own. Rowan decided to turn and leave to focus more on the written portion of the exam versus the practical.

It was the final week of lessons for this term, and Lorena Howard would hate to be late. She had done well so far, and wanted nothing more than to continue to have a good reputation within the classes to be there on time, and do her work. Lorena wanted to make her mother proud too, so far, Lorena was happy with what she was doing. She grabbed her backpack and left the Slytherin house to head to class. Lorena walked in the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom but did not sit down since the first years were soon led to the Duelling Chamber. They could practice their wandwork here, or go to the library to study. Lorena decided to practice her spells since she could do the other one later. She did her best for every spell she learned this year, even Charms. She did that for the remainder of the period.

Their final lesson of the semester for defence against the dark arts was instead in the duelling chamber. Lincoln stood and listened to Professor Waldgrave as he gave them their options for the final lesson of the semester. Lincoln didn’t want to practice duelling so he was glad to hear they had the option to go and study in the library which was the option that Lincoln decided to go with. He grabbed his bag and made his way out of the classroom.
