First Years Lesson Four

Mallory was looking forward to this class. This was undoubtedly one of Mallory's favorite lessons. Peter was tucked safely behind her desk, asleep for the time being. She hummed as she set about the room, her hair carefully brushed and her soft blue robes swishing gently around her. When everything was ready, she took her seat at her desk, and with a dainty flick of her wrist, the doors opened. She smiled warmly as the students filed in. "Hello, everyone. Take your seats," she called, waiting until they were all seated before standing. "Welcome," she greeted warmly, bringing her hands together.

She motioned then to the mountains of pillows around her desk. "I trust you've noticed the newest addition to our class. No, we aren't building forts. We're learning a new spell!" She offered cheerily. "Accio. I trust you've all done your reading, so can anyone tell me what this spell is?" She looked around, pointing to a raised hand. "Very good!" She beamed. "Five points."

Mallory smiled, brushing her hair behind her ear. "Now, I'd like us to practice this. Be specific, now, or you may summon more pillows than you'd like. As always, the wording of your spells is crucial. Your wands are very powerful, and if you do not focus, if you do not concentrate your power, you can easily overwhelm yourself. I'm right here if you need anything, do not hesitate to ask if you would like my assistance."

She smiled, stepping back. "Everyone, I'd like you to practice summoning a cushion. At the end of the lesson, everyone, please take your cushion with you. A small reward for a spell well done. Off you are then." She returned to her desk, smiling, watchful to see if any students needed her attention or if Peter woke before the class ended.

Lilith entered the Classroom a little more tired than usual but still managed to give the Professor an answering smile. She took seat at the front, spreading her note supplies in front of her and placing her wand neatly next to the parchment and quill. Lilith let her eyes wander around the room softly taking in the pillows and raised a curious brow, casting a questioning look at the Professor. She was quick to explain and Lilith raised her hand at the question. "Accio, is the spell used to summon an object towards the caster or what I mean to say is, it is used to yes summon it toward you, like so yes." She made a show to move her quill towards herself in the air. "From what I read to my understanding it only works on objects in the direct line of sight of the caster though if you want an object out of your line of sight you need to include the name of said object after the incantation." She explained softly, a little bit warily just in case she was wrong.

A small smile graced the first years lips as she was rewarded five points for a correct answer and she relaxed a little bit in her seat. Lilith started her practice of the spell and for the first time this semester found herself struggling a little bit. She found that her mind started to wander off more often than not, thus her focus slipping a little. By her fifth try she was ready to give up and admit defeat when the pillow finally came to her and a feeling of pride and joy, with a mix of relief filled her chest. It was a nice feeling, to see that even if she struggled a little momentarily she was still able to perform the spell, just needed a little more time. As the lesson came to an end Lilith was more than happy to walk out of the room, giving her professor a small nod accompanied with a smile before heading out.

Winnie walked into the charms classroom and took her usual spot in the room. She had noticed all of the pillows and rolled her eyes at the mere idea that they would build forts. She liked the professor but was glad they weren’t being treated as children. The slytherin nodded along as the professor went over what they were doing, the spell they were doing and then after showing it to them, let them just get started on it. She took her wand and pointed it towards the pillows before saying. ”Accio,” she was specific and the pillow flew to her, she used the rest of the time in the lesson to just practice the spell over and over again.

Entering the classroom, Eli moved immediately to sit with Lily, gesturing to Sayuri to come and sit at his other side. They seemed to be getting along well and he was relishing the start of a friendship he hoped he had struck up with the Ravenclaw. He wasn't very good at making friends he thought, but it was something he was beginning to be a little more comfortable with. He was a little dubious about a pile of cushions, but he was willing to trust the process, even if he did consider the professor to be a little kooky. She soon introduced the Accio spell, and he high-fived Lily as she answered the question. He was going to give this his best shot. It wasn't his favourite class but that hardly mattered. Taking her advice to heart, he held his wand carefully, focusing seriously on one single cushion in the front of her desk. "Accio cushion," he said softly, keeping his voice, even, steady, and he was soon rewarded when the pillow wobbled but glided over and into his hands. A grin broke out across his face as he hugged it. He would need more practice, but he was getting it. The idea of taking the cushion with him was a nice touch, and as he prepared to try the spell again, he found himself already thinking about the next spells and the usefulness of Accio outside the classroom.

As Lumos entered the classroom, he spotted Winnie; they didn't hang out much but he liked that she was smart and wanted to learn - in the classes where he needed that motivation, she tended to come in really handy. Charms wasn't one he needed motivation for really, but she was good as a partner and to bounce ideas off when he didn't have access to Nox, who was his usual go-to. There was an absurd mound of pillows in the room and he wondered if they would practice throwing them at each other, or perhaps throwing each other at them until Professor Grayveson clarified they would be learning accio - but less thrilling than he hoped, but better than nothing. It was at least worth his time, which was the important thing. He would have been loathe to think he might struggle with something so friggen basic. Holding his wand loosely, he pointed to one of the cushions, imagining it flying over to him. "Accio!" the pillow immediately flew out from where it had been sitting and smacked him right in the face. Ah - that's why they were practicing on pillows. He looked around quickly to see if anyone had noticed before dropping the pillow. Good thing Nox wasn't here to see that he never would have lived it down! He continued to practice for the rest of the lesson until he finally had the pillow gliding slowly towards him.

Sayuri entered the classroom, eyeing the stack of pillows with a raised brow. Still, she ignored it quickly as she headed for her usual seat only to find Elijah waving for her to sit beside him. She gave him a skeptical glance and looked at the girl she didn't like sitting beside him. Still, fine. Her brother was offering an olive branch though she doubted he actually knew she was annoyed with him. They weren't really in tune with her emotions as they were with the others she thinks. Anyway, she waited for the instructions on how they would be performing Accio today. Another useful spell. At least it didn't take much longer of a wait.

Sayuri supposed the activity was easy enough. When it was her turn to try, she held her wand comfortably in her hand as she eyed one of the cushions. “Accio cushion,” she intoned clearly. The pillow wobbled before slowly rising and flying across the room toward her, landing in her lap. A pleased smile crossed her face before she squared it back to neutrality. She tried a couple more times with pillows of varying sizes. Her aim could be a little shaky at times, but it was definitely something she could work on outside of class.
