First Years, Lesson Four

Noel was already standing up as the first year students came in. He greeted them with an friendly smile and closed the door behind as he walked over to it. He liked stretching his legs and not sitting down all lesson. Today it was an important but also heavy subject he needed to be talking about. One which recently came very close to himself, since in his family there had been some incidents with it. He than walked back to his desk and leaned towards it as he asked for attention of the first years.

With an more serious face than usual he started. ''What are the consequences of using Dark Magic?'' He than put down. Not directly as an question an student needed to answer. '' That's an complex question since not all dark practices are truly evil or even criminal. You've seen what meddling with the Dark Arts can do when I showed you an image of Lord Voldemort. Once a normal human like you and me, his physical appearance changed gradually as he became more involved with the Dark Arts. But as I said, that doesn't mean that every curse or jinx has the same effect on people,'' Noel spoke looking around the classroom, some were taking notes, some weren't. '' The Unforgivable Curses are a different matter.'' He than made text appear on the blackboard behind him with a flick of his wand.

Unforgivable Curses

  • The Killing Curse: Causes instant and painless death
  • The Cruciatus Curse: Inflicts excruciating pain on the victim of the curse
  • The Imperius Curse: Causes the victim to become unquestioningly obedient to the caster

He than looked back at the class to see if they all paid attention, and how the reactions were. '' The Killing Curse, the Cruciatus Curse and the Imperius Curse are particularly vile and quite illegal curses. The punishments for using any of these three curses on another person are severe. If you are caught you'll likely be spending the rest of your life in the wizarding prison Azkaban.'' He than spoke. Knowing well enough that his uncle was leading this exact fate. But he had never been close with him. '' Whilst incarcerated, your wand will be taken from you and destroyed, and your name will be forever tarnished. '' Noel looked around giving the students enough time to write it all down before continuing. Letting that sink in. And walked through the classroom. '' For the rest of the lesson, I would like for you to partner up again and practice the Shield Charm and the Stunning Spell. Try to use a different partner than last week, please.'' Noel walked around the classroom, to help out in case it was needed. And to observe the students an bit.

Roleplay the lesson. Feel free to tag @Professor Noel Waldgrave if you want me to interact with your character!

Tori's favourite class right now was easily Defence Against the Dark Arts, even if she did find some of the topics to be a little... well, she'd had several nightmares over the last couple of weeks that had amounted to mostly dark shadows in the corners of her room. Still, she couldn't blame the professor for that, he was just teaching them the curriculum, and letting them know about the dangers out there. None of the other professors had really gotten their point across with that yet, except for maybe in potions. She paid attention as the class started and she felt a heavy silence settle over the room as the professor began discussing the consequences of using Dark Magic. She could feel the apprehension slipping between the bones of her ribs as he continued talking, a serious tone to his voice, letting Tori know this was quite a grave lesson. She knew she needed to take notes here.

The image of Lord Voldemort and the gradual transformation he underwent due to his involvement with the Dark Arts made Tori's stomach churn slightly. She could feel the weight of the subject pressing down on her, especially when the professor mentioned the Unforgivable Curses. Tori's hand tightened around her quill as she wrote down the names of the curses and their effects, trying to suppress the unease that crept up her spine. The idea of spending life in Azkaban, losing her wand, and having her name forever tarnished was chilling. As Professor Waldgrave walked around the room, Tori couldn't help but shiver at the fear that rose up her back.

When the professor spoke more about the curses and their uses, Tori couldn't take it anymore, and turned to leave the classroom. There was just something lingering in the back of her mind that she couldn't quite shake.

Kiera could hardly believe she managed to be one of the first one in the classroom for the DADA lesson. It seemed she was always running late no matter how early she left for class. She was still a little wary of the professor after the last lesson, but she knew how important it was for her to learn defensive magic. Unfortunately, it seemed as if they were in for another lecture today instead of learning new spells.

Kiera took notes as Professor Walgrave spoke, but she really wasn't concerned about the idea of using dark magic. She knew that was something she would absolutely never do in a million years, so why did he need to lecture her about it? She would never disgrace the Potter name by becoming a practicer of dark magic. The brunette was glad when they finally ended the lesson. She packed up her things and left for lunch in the great hall.

Esme made her way into Professor Waldgrave’s classroom ready for another lesson, she knew the subject they were taking would touch upon some serious and dark things but she wasn’t expecting to learn about unforgivable curses so soon into her time at Hogwarts. Esme absorbed the gravity of the lesson, aware of the serious consequences that came with dark magic and the Unforgivable Curses. She focused on noting the distinctions between ordinary dark practices and the irreversible impact of the forbidden spells, keeping her thoughts composed despite the heaviness of the topic.

When it came time to practice the Shield Charm and Stunning Spell, Esme partnered with someone new, executing her spells with quiet concentration. Once the lesson was over, Esme put away her wand and packed away her notes so she could head straight out of the classroom once they had been dismissed.

Winnie walked into the defence against the dark arts classroom and took the same spot in the room as the week before. She wasn't that interested in dark magic, not really. She knew it was bad, and was unlikely to really use it. The slytherin began writing down what the professor began telling them about dark magic, making sure to listen along closely to what was being said by the professor about them. She looked to the board behind him and took down what it said. before the professor then continued the lecture. She hoped they'd cover them in more detail, but the professor really just did a brief overview of it and then was able to practice once again the spells which they had covered in the lesson prior. She made sure she was getting better at both, and used every bit of the lesson to do so.

Entering each lesson had become a routine, a daily ritual that brought much needed structure and oddly enough security to Amory. He had never considered that following other peoples instructions on which class to attend would bring him any sort of security, in fact he had fully expected to retaliate in any way he could. But for the first time in his life, the first year found himself feeling comfortable with routine. Feeling closer to content than he ever had, it was new and foreign, but a welcome feeling.

Just like every other class Amory sat down and started taking notes. Paying close attention to every word out of Professor Waldgrave's mouth. He might dare say this professor was his particular favourite so far, but he'd only admit it to himself. Visible chills were running through his body at each word and explanation, his skin was forming goosebumps and he felt uncomfortable about those curses. There were a lot of things he could understand, but to hurt another person so severely or ending their life without a reason was beyond him. He might never be what most would consider the perfect person or the kindest one out of the bunch, but he found himself promising to never sink to that level of darkness.

Amory was more than glad to practice those spells, he wanted to get better at it all, wanted to learn as much as he could. There was a slight sigh though, at the mention of partnering up with someone new. He quickly found just the first person that wasn't Felix and spent rest of the lesson practicing.

Jasper listened and took notes about Dark Magic and the consequences of using it while the professor spoke. He stalled momentarily when they mentioned a wizarding prison, Jasper had never heard of Azkaban before, his parents had never mentioned it. Spending life in prison sounded bad, but having his wand taken away and destroyed was worse. Although he'd only had his wand for a relatively short time, it was his closest companion and he would struggle to do without it for even a few hours! When it came time to practice spells, Jasper took out his wand and started blocking and stunning his partner until it was the end of class and they were dismissed.
