First Years, Lesson Five

Professor Adelia was already at the front of the classroom, arms crossed and wand tucked under one arm. Once the room had settled, she pushed off from the desk and gestured for them to sit properly. “Alright, let’s not waste time—two spells today, so I need you sharp.” Her voice carried easily, calm and clipped but not unkind. “First up is the Banishing Charm. If you did your reading—and you should have—you’ll know this is the opposite of Accio.”

She raised her wand toward a cushion on a nearby chair. “Depulso.” The cushion shot neatly across the room, landing just shy of the blackboard. With another flick, she summoned it back, then multiplied several more into the space between rows. “Practice time. Summon one to you with Accio, then send it away with Depulso. Accio must be specific. Depulso? Not so much—just point and fire.” She gave a small nod. “Try not to launch anything into a classmate’s face.”

As the students set to work, Trina wandered among them. Occasionally she corrected wand angles or reminded them to focus. She made notes, quietly impressed by a few determined attempts. When it looked like most had the rhythm down, she clapped once to bring them back.

“Alright, next spell.” Her voice was calm but expectant. “Can anyone tell me the incantation for the Disarming Charm?” She waited, then nodded at a correct answer. “Expelliarmus. Good. This one’s a bit more aggressive than what we’ve done so far. Used to knock an opponent’s wand from their hand—important in duelling, and if you’re ever caught off guard.”

She demonstrated with a sharp movement. “Expelliarmus.” A student’s wand shot cleanly from their grasp and landed in Trina’s free hand. She handed it back with a brief nod. “You’ll be working in pairs—three at most. Take turns disarming each other. Control is more important than force. We’re not trying to fling each other into walls.”

She stepped back, giving the students space to arrange themselves. “I’ll be making rounds. If your wand ends up somewhere it shouldn’t, or you end up on your back, let me know.”

Bee was enjoying her charms classes and was feeling as though she was learning the most from them out of all her classes. She promptly made her way to her charms class and greeted Professor Adelia as she took her usual seat. The professor started the lesson quickly, introducing them to the first spell called the Banishing Charm.

When instructed, Bee used the summoning charm she learnt last lesson to summon a black cushion. She did this easily, and then took a breath before saying the new incantation. "Depulso." she said, beaming as it went away from her.

Everyone seemed to get this spell pretty easily, and so they quickly moved on to another charm. It seemed like more of a defensive charm and wasn't at all like the previous spell they had learnt. She partnered up with a classmate and they practiced the spell back and forth with each other until the lesson finally came to an end.
