First Years, Lesson Five

LESSON FIVE

Noel was sitting on the edge of his desk while he waited for the students to arrive. It was not an difficult lesson today, for him at least. There wasn't much to do for him with what he had planned for them today so he had brought some homework from the older students and a cup of coffee with him to enjoy while they were busy. He counted their heads as the students settled in and waited for the last few to arrive as well before starting the lesson. ''Rather than taking out your wands, I'd like all of you to take out your quills instead. In preparation for the exam, I've prepared a test for you.'' He pointed his wand at the pile of parchments on his desk and with a wave watched as it was handed out to the students. He heard some people who weren't that excited. But exams were already closer again than they thought. '' You may leave the classroom once you have finished the test and handed it in. Before you start, however, I would like to tell you that we'll be visiting the Duelling Chamber together next week, so don't forget to bring your wands along.'' And he than gave them a smile, since that seemed to be something they looked forward too. Most of them. As the student started he took an sip of his coffee and went on with the assignments of the older students. And sometimes checked if anyone was still doing what they should do.

Miles was incredibly disappointed to walk into another class and find that it wasn't including learning any new spells. In fact, he was even more disappointed this time around because they were actually doing a quiz. He couldn't help the groan, slouching in his seat slightly as he listened to the Professor fully explain what they would be doing. He didn't like quizzes, he liked quizzes as much as he liked exams. Which wasn't at all. Thankfully, it wasn't too challenging of a test and he managed to work his way down the list within the allotted time, but he was still thankful when it was actually over. Handing in his completed test to the Professor once he was done, he did perk up at the mention of meeting in the duelling chamber next week. Now that sounded interesting and he left the classroom actually looking forward to a lesson for a change.

If there was one class that Autumn seemed to enjoy besides flying, she thought it had to be Defence Against The Dark Arts. Somehow she found it interesting, especially since it also tied in with the student defence association. She actually felt as though she was learning something in this class. When she saw on her timetable that it was next, she happily made her way there.

As Autumn entered the classroom, she nodded in greeting to the professor as she took her seat. As she saw a piece of parchment in front of her with a quiz, she sighed a little. She hated quizzes. It was bad enough that she was going to need to take the real one in a couple of weeks. She tried her best to answer all of the questions and handed in her work at the end of the lesson.

DADA Lesson #5

  • Why do we study Defense Against the Dark Arts? To learn how to defend ourselves against the dark arts
  • Write a paragraph about Lord Voldemort OR Gormlaith Gaunt OR Gellert Grindelwald, explaining what they are famous for and why they are considered practitioners of the dark arts (Note: You may be asked questions about all three of these individuals during the end-of-semester exam). Lord Voldemort, also known as You-Know-Who, was probably the most famous dark wizard of his time. His real name is Tom Marvolo Riddle and he was once a student at the Hogwarts in Scotland. He was sorted into Slytherin house. He is known as practicing dark arts as he casts the unforgiveable curses a lot and created a group called the Death Eaters. He also tried making himself immortal and created seven horcruxes in order to do this.
  • List the three Unforgivable Curses The cruciatus curse, the imperius curse and the killing curse
  • What is the punishment for casting an Unforgivable Curse? Time in azkaban
  • What is the incantation for the Stunning Spell? Stupefy
  • What does the Shield Charm do and what is its incantation? Protego, casts an invisible shield around you to protect you from an incoming spell, or perhaps an object flying towards you
  • What is a charm you can use to disarm your opponent? Write its name and incantation: Expelliarmus, the disarming charm.

There were only a couple of weeks now until the exam and admittedly Tess felt as though she was falling behind. With her father having gone, she was a little distracted, and all of the class material just wasn’t sinking in. How could she focus on classes when her father needed her support and she couldn’t give it? The girl sighed as she packed her belongings into her backpack and began heading to her classes.

Tess entered the Defence Against The Dark Arts class, sighing as she noticed a quiz sitting on the desk. She wasn't in the mood for doing quizzes, despite knowing that an exam was going to be around the corner soon enough. She tried her best answering the questions. She didn't think she managed to get it all correct but it was good enough. She was quick to exit the classroom once dismissed.

Lincoln sighed in disappointment when Professor Waldgrave instructed them to take out their quills rather than their wands, he did just that and looked over the test that had been prepared for them. It made sense to do it, it just seemed a little early when they could have review lessons in the final week of the semester. He took the test and quickly went through the questions and filled it in. Once he was done he handed the test to Professor Waldgrave and left the classroom.
