First Years Charms Lesson Four

Mallory was looking forward to this class. This was undoubtedly one of Mallory's favorite lessons. She hummed as she set about the room, her hair carefully brushed and her soft blue robes swishing gently around her. When everything was ready, she took her seat at her desk, and with a dainty flick of her wrist, the doors opened. She smiled warmly as the students filed in. "Hello, everyone. Take your seats," she called, waiting until they were all seated before standing. "Welcome," she greeted warmly, bringing her hands together.

She motioned then to the mountains of pillows around her desk. "I trust you've noticed the newest addition to our class. No, we aren't building forts. We're learning a new spell!" She offered cheerily. "Accio. I trust you've all done your reading, so can anyone tell me what this spell is?" She looked around, pointing to a raised hand. "Very good!" She beamed. "Five points."

Mallory smiled, brushing her hair behind her ear. "Now, I'd like us to practice this. Be specific, now, or you may summon more pillows than you'd like. As always, the wording of your spells is crucial. Your wands are very powerful, and if you do not focus, if you do not concentrate your power, you can easily overwhelm yourself. I'm right here if you need anything, do not hesitate to ask if you would like my assistance."

She smiled, stepping back. "Everyone, I'd like you to practice summoning a cushion. At the end of the lesson, everyone, please take your cushion with you. A small reward for a spell well done. Off you are then." She returned to her desk, smiling, watchful to see if any students needed her attention before the class ended.

Julian sat quietly, occasionally looking at the mounds of pillows with a weird sort of fascination. The Summoning Charm. Another daily spell that was just part of wizarding life. When it was time to practice, he gripped his wand and pointed at one of the pillows. "Accio cushion." Moments passed and nothing happened. He frowned slightly and adjusted his grip on his wand because he didn't know what else to do to get it to work. "Accio cushion." Nothing happened again and he frowned. One of them should have at least moved by now. He took a couple more moments to ponder on the problem. Perhaps, he needed to choose a cushion to summon. Instead of looking at the pile as a whole, Julian focused on one cushion amongst the pile. A light sky blue one that looked comfortable. "Accio cushion." This time, the pillow twitched before flying towards him and Julian caught it as it hit him in the chest. His lips twitched in the faintest hint of satisfaction before he schooled his features.
