Shaylah sat at the Slytherin table with Sydney at breakfast. The way Shaylah acted and dressed made her unpopular with the other Slytherins.
Shaylah grabbed a piece of bacon and put it on her plate so she could eat it.

(Soz. lame. My godparents are here.)

Sydney was in the hall with Shaylah, It was breakfast time. She normally sat alone but, now her best friend had started, she always had at least one person to sit next to. Occasionally they invited the other girls over, they were thinking about inviting Sam at one point but then realised it may not be good for a hufflepuff to sit on a table of Slytherins. They would invite him when they sat at the Ravenclaw table.

At the moment Sydney was munching on a slice of toast with Honey on it, well, technically she was trying to swollow the bit she was munching. Though, her laughter made that difficult. "Seriously Shay, you should've seen your face. It was like you were charmed. By a hufflepuff and all." She was laughing about yesturdays meeting where all the girls met Sashas', incredibly cute, friend. Sam.

"It's not funny. I have a serious weakness for cute boys." Shaylah always fell for boys. "I can't believe I acted so stupid. It's just not a me thing. Even you know that." Shaylah looked over at the hufflepuff table and couldn't see Sam anywhere. "At least he's not here now." She didn't know how she would react to seeing him.

Sydney laughed again, this time managing to swallow her toast first. "You were holding his hand Shay." She looked at the Hufflepuff table herself, spotting him right away. "Yeah he is, He's right over there." She pointed to him, where you caould see him eating on his own.

Shaylah followed Sydney's eyes and saw Sam sitting there. She looked down at her plate before he spotte her looking at him. "That's just not fair. He's so cute. I mean, look at him. His amazing eyes, his gorgeous hair, his perfect smile...butthe sorting hat had to put him in hufflepuff. What is this school coming to??" She was yabbering on about nothing so she stopped talking before smeone heard that she was crushing on a hufflepuff.

Sydney put her hand on her friends shoulder. "Shay, hun, don't say that allowed at the Slytherin table in the middle of breakfast. Gossip spreads fast." She was about to continue speaking when her family owl came down from the sky with a package. "Oh, this must be my dress back." She saw a note attatched and read it.

Sydneys' smile dropped and she froze, her father had died. By an aurors hand. She didn't know what to do, she was just frozen, physically and emotionally. She didn't feel sad, just nothing.

Shaylah finished off the food on her plate when the owl put the package on the table. Sydney read the note attached and Shay saw the whole of her friends face drop. Sydney froze in place so Shaylah looked over her shoulder at the note in her hand. "Oh. Sydney, I'm so sorry." Shaylah didn't know what else to say. She had never been in this position before so she wasn't very good at comforting people.

Sydney put the letter on the table, picked up the package and walked off. She didn't feel anything, normally she just didn't show any emotion, she wasn't used to not actually feeling it. She made it all the way back to her dorm before her feelings returned and she broke down, she never got to read the last bit of the letter, the bit telling her about her mothers pregnancy.

Shaylah picked up the letter and read it on her way to the dorm. She didn't realise that Sydney hadn't finished reading the letter.

Sydney paused when she heard Shaylah walk into the room. She wiped her eyes and sniffed abit. "So you read it then?" She didn't even have to look to know that the letter would be in Shay's hands.

Shaylah had never been any good at comforting people when they were upset, mainly because she hardly ever had to. "Yeah." Shaylah closed the door as she expected Sydney wouldn't be very happy if anybody saw her like this. Instead she tried to get Sydney to think of other things. "Do you think it's going to be a girl or a boy??"

Sydney's eyes immediatley shot to Shaylah in confusion. "Will what be a boy or girl?" She had no idea what Shay was on about, it sounded completely random to her.

Shaylah frowned. How could she forget something like that only seconds after she had read it?? "The baby." She looked at Sydney wondering whether she would realise what Shaylah was on about.

Now Sydney really was confused. She narrowed her eyes at Shay, wondering if her friend had gone mad. "What baby?"

"Haven't you read the end of the letter??" Shaylah passedher the letter which she had had in her hand the whole time.

Sydney snatched the letter from her younger friend and her eyes widened as she read the last paragraph. Her mother was pregnant. She felt slightly angry when she heard the discovery was made the day of her fathers funeral, mainly because she wasn't told about his death in time for his funeral. One detail confused her though. "Why was mother with your dad on the day of my fathers' funeral"

Shaylah shrugged. "I don't know. He hasn't written to me much recently. He seems to be busy with work and all." She was confused how this could be Sydney's first question from reading the letter but she didn't ask why. Shaylah assumed that Syd was probably annoyed that she didn't get to go to her dad's funeral. Shaylah knew that if her dad died she would definitely want to go to the funeral.

Sydney shook her head. "But remember, the first time they met was when we introduced them right? So why would they be together on such an emotional day for mother?" Something wasn't adding up for Sydney, as far as she knew Tracy Caine had only met Jay Rouge once but here it sounded like they were pretty close.

"You have a point there actually." Shaylah frowned trying to think of why they would have been together. "Perhaps they just bumped into each other." That was the only thing that Shaylah could think of.

Sydney looked at Shaylah oddly. "You're saying they bumped into each other and your father decided mother needed to go to hospital for a pregnancy test?" For some reason she didn't quite believe that. Sydney leapt off her bed and rummaged in her trunk for a quill and parchment. She quickly wrote a response to her mother, asking what she was doing with Jay.

"She could have been looking ill or something." Shaylah didn't know what was happening. Her dad had always been someone sending people to hospital not taking them. He certainly didn't stay with them. "I don't know. Like I said, he hasn't been writing much just recently."
