Fifth Years, Lesson Five

full

The closer the end of the semester got, the less intense James wanted his lessons to be. His students had a lot to think about over the coming weeks and a whole semester before they actually sat the O.W.L for his subject, he didn't want them forgetting everything he had taught them that year while trying to study everything they learned from previous years. James stood at his desk as his students made their way into the classroom and took their seats, in keeping with a more relaxed tone he was aiming for with the lesson he left the classroom door open.

"Welcome back fifth years, I want to keep things short and sweet today so I can let you get back to your studying," James looked around at the students in the room knowing at least some of them had no intention of using their free time to study. To some of them, it was far too early to start studying, he knew because he'd been just that type of student when sitting his own O.W.Ls. "Today we will be covering the Flagrante Curse, this curse once cast on an object will burn whomever touches the item in question, it is sometimes used as as a security feature at Gringotts to protect high value vaults and like a few curses we have learned about in this classroom, it cannot be reversed by a simple 'finite', it wouldn't be much use as security if it could now would it?" James laughed before continuing. "If you could read up on the curse and write an essay to be handed in the next time you're in this room, otherwise you're free to continue your studies, class dismissed,"

Assignment: RP the lesson. Complete the homework for extra credit.

Kyousuke was starting to feel the pressure, but Kyousuke only sharpened under pressure. It just meant his personal relationships were suffering somewhat. Kyousuke did feel guilty about that. He entered the classroom with that at the back of his mind, taking his usual spot near the front and taking out his supplies. He took notes as the professor spoke about the curse. It sounded very painful, in all honesty, but Kyousuke wasn't about to go rob Gringotts so it didn't really matter to him. He took a note of the homework, making sure he got it down, and once the lesson was over, went on his way to finish it.

The flagrante curse burns anyone and anything that touches the object it has been cast on. It is used in conjunction with the gemino curse, so that objects duplicate and burn. This creates a strong deterrant against thieves, who risk the possibility of being smothered and burnt to death.

Morrie laughed when Professor Cade said it was a quick lesson as to not disturb their study because she for one, wasn't busy studying for exams that were still months away. It was weird thought Morrie, and a waste of time since she's not going to remember the information that long. She took a few notes on the Flagrante Curse and thought it would be a good thing to add to some of her enemies possessions, it was disappointing then that they did not get to practice the curse in class. At the end of the lesson, Morrie packed up and walked out.

There were only a couple of weeks now until Violet's OWL exams, and the prefect was just keen to get it over and done with. She made her way to her Defence Against The Dark Arts class and took her usual seat as the professor started the lesson. He began lecturing them about another curse. Rather than duplicating an object upon touching it, this one made the person's hand start burning. This one was probably going to be a lot more useful, and it was a shame really that the professor wasn't giving them the opportunity to cast it themselves. As the lesson came to an end, she headed promptly to her next class.

Apolline walked into the defence against the dark arts class and took her usual spot in the room. Her gaze moved to the professor at the front of the room as the man got started on what they would be cover. She nodded as he said the lesson would be short and then began writing down what the professor was telling them about the flagrante curse. She took the time to make sure she had everything down from what the professor was saying - to not miss any of it. Then she was able to pack up and head out of the room.

Aroha was a bit disappointed they were still just learning about curses and jinxes rather than actually doing them. But she sucked it up. She paid close attention, taking down notes on the off chance they'd be useful. It sounded a bit cruel to her to cast such a spell, but it wasn't called a curse for nothing. She mused over the ethics of using it, even as a thief deterrant, and wondered if the wizarding world had quite the right idea about all of these things. Soon the lesson drew to a close and Aroha, who'd been distracted, quickly packed away her things to leave.

OWL year had not nearly been as difficult as Ever had expected. She should have known than to have too high expectations of Hogwarts classes. She felt like Defense Against the Dark Arts had been the most disappointing of them all. Some curses were discussed, but Ever barely got to interact with them, besides a useless cookie she had been able to touch and not even eat. Interaction was the bare minimum. She had not been able to cast anything. It was driving her crazy. She let his displeasure known by the rather unpleasant look on her face as she entered the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom.

Ever took her seat in the front row, setting her bag on her lap. She doubted she would even need to take anything out this lesson if this class was anything like the others. She was right. The professor shortly went over the Flagrante Curse. Kind of cool but again when would Ever use it. Maybe set her designs with this curse to prevent those from ever stealing them. That definitely was not a good plan. Dramatic though. Ever smirked at this as she swung her bag over her shoulder. The class had been short but they did have homework. Ever would spend the rest of the time she would have been suffering in class on the assignment. With this in mind, the Slytherin girl left the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom, heading back to her dorm.
