Fifth Years: Lesson 5

Professor Killian Borisyuk sat behind the massive desk with his arms folded across his chest. He had a few ideas on what he wanted to do, but he would have to wait until after the lesson. He had done a fair bit of research for this lecture and knowing that their school participated in a legendary tournament should have been something to be proud of, but then again, his did too and he didn't care one way or another. So, he was just waiting for the fifth years to arrive. His green eyes glanced up as the fifth years came in, and soon were seated for the lesson to begin. With a wave of his wand, the door closed. "Good afternoon, fifth years. This will be the last lecture of this class, one you might have looked forward to the most." Yes, because learning about the history of the school was always a plus. Especially when it came down to the Triwizard tournament.

"After some talk, the Triwizard Tournament decided to open up again, this time expanding to cover more than just the three major European schools. In 2021, Hogwarts New Zealand was the host. This castle also had guests from Hogwarts Scotland and Durmstrang. This was when the founder of the school, Alicia Barker, was still Headmistress, which the tournament would later make her retire. The champions were chosen, who were Durmstrang's Cameron Kingsley, someone you might recognize as a former Minister for Magic here in New Zealand. Hogwarts' Scotland Nina Patrokov, a Hufflepuff, and finally, Hillary Grace from Hogwarts New Zealand who was a Gryffindor. The first task was hosted on the Quidditch pitch, dealing with dangerous magical creatures."

Killian was not sure what ones, but at least all three survived. "The second task involved a volcano but it never came to fruition as some Death Eater enthusiasts broke in and kidnapped the Headmistress. This stopped the Triwizard tournament, of course. Once she was found, she resigned as her post so you can only imagine the hell she went through." Killian did not censor himself here since he wanted to drive the point across. But there was another tournament that he knew about in the past, and there was no more after that. Perhaps for a good reason. "The final Triwizard Tournament was hosted in Beauxbatons in 2024 because of the failed one. The schools that participated this time were Beauxbatons, Durmstrang, and Hogwarts New Zealand. The champions were Mike Goulding, a Gryffindor, for Hogwarts New Zealand, Morrigan "Moko" Craven for Durmstrang, and Aubrey Durlinch for Beauxbatons."

He only knew the name for the Durmstrang one but for a reason. "The first task involved the champions heading into a dark forest, hunting for runes that you might see in Ancient Runes, but they were faced with full-blooded Veela to tempt them." That would be a hell of a task considering that the chickens were allegedly beautiful and tempting. Killian did not want to have anything to do with those birds. "The second task involved an enchanted cavern with dangers. Lumos was not very effective in that darkness. The cavern would change walls, create magical ice men that would attack, and utilize fire. The third task was a three way duel. The winner with the most points for the Triwizard Tournament was Morrigan Craven." Killian smirked subtly since that was his school's champion, though now he worked at Hogwarts New Zealand, he could still have some bias to him.

"And that is the last of the Triwizard Tournaments. Whether or not it will expand to other schools, but the past proved how dangerous they can be. After all, deaths and kidnappings aren't exactly positive looks when they go live. If you have no other questions, no homework." Killian waved it at the door to open it to allow the fifth years to leave. He had nothing else for them today.
Assignment: RP the lesson.

Teddy arrived for History of Magic and took a seat for the lecture, Professor Borisyuk said this would be their last lecture which automatically made Teddy excited for what their last lesson would involve, he hoped some sort of school trip like the ones Professor Moncrieffe used to take them on. Teddy listened to the lecture about the more recent Triwizard Tournaments, raising his eyebrows a little at the story about the headmisstress being kidnapped. It sounded full of dramatics and something they should definitely host again. Teddy already knew he would put in to become a champion for the excitement of it all. When the lecture finished, Teddy finished up his notes and packed away his belongings and headed out of the classroom.

Marley quickly made her way to her History of Magic classroom and took a seat in her usual spot. She then took out the things she needed for the lesson and placed them on the desk in front of her. It wasn't going to be long until the semester was coming to an end, and Marley couldn't believe it. Marley moved her attention towards the professor as the professor started off with the lesson. The Hufflepuff quietly gasped when the professor mentioned that this would be their last lecture. She wondered what they would be doing in their final lesson. She had hoped it was something fun and exciting. Marley made sure to take as many notes as she could, as she listened to the professor speak, so she didn't want to miss out on anything important. She also nodded her head along to what the professor was saying from time to time throughout the lesson to show that she was understanding the content that was being said.

It wasn't long before the lesson had come to an end and they were dismissed. Thankfully, there was no homework, which Marley was grateful for, as she knew she wanted to focus more on studying for her OWLs. The Hufflepuff quickly packed up her things as well as tidied up her area. Marley then says a quick and appreciative thanks and goodbye to the professor before heading out of the classroom with her friends and the rest of her classmates.

Last week they’d talked about the Triwizard Tournaments in Europe, so it made sense they would talk about the one they’d had in New Zealand decades ago. She took some notes of the names from the other schools and was surprised to hear a former Minister’s name, that was kind of cool actually, she had to admit. It sounded like it had all kind of gone not very well if what the professor was saying was true, a kidnapping? And of the Headmistress? That sounded very stressful. The tasks also sounded very dangerous and she wondered how she would handle such a situation herself. She admired the courage of the students who did participate though, it must have been scary for them.

Veronica was really starting to hate history of magic, but at least Professor Borisyuk confirmed it would be their last lecture. They were continuing with their discussion of the tri-wizard tournament only this time focusing on more recent iterations of the event. As dangerous as it was, Veronica did think it was a shame that the event was no longer held because she would love to take part in it. The glory would be amazing. She spent the lesson takings notes and once it was over she packed up and made her way out of the classroom.
