Fifth Years: Lesson 4

Professor Killian Borisyuk looked over the lesson plan for the day, and there was a fair bit within it. It was one that the fifth years might find interesting, so he looked forward to seeing how they would react to it. Once the fifth years were accounted for, Killian gestured toward the door to close it. They were in for a lengthy lecture, and even had the homework already planned in his mind. "Good afternoon fifth years. Just like what I said before, I will be going over the Triwizard Tournament. Next lesson will be this school's involvement, but for now, I will be going over the history of the tournament, the laws that had to be in place, and the one that occurred that ultimately was used to bring back Voldemort." Killian sat down behind his desk and folded his arms behind his head. Killian was ultimately relaxed while talking about this subject because it was sporty, and he enjoyed it.

"The Triwizard Tournament is a tournament that brought together the three major schools in Europe: Hogwarts Scotland, Durmstrang, and Beauxbatons. It is held every five years, and was established sometime in the thirteenth century. Each school takes turns hosting the tournament, and the judges for the tournament which are comprised as the headmasters or headmistresses of the schools. The tournament tasks are highly risking, and since there were an increasing number of deaths, the tournament was discontinued after the 1790s. The reason being was because the tournament in 1792, a task involved catching a cockatrice. The beast rampaged and injured three of the judges and others. The tournament was cancelled after this. There have been attempts to resurrect the tournament but they were largely unsuccessful." Killian wondered why a death was not involved in the cancellation of the tournament, but instead, a beast caused it.

He cleared his throat to continue the lesson, "Each tournament has three tasks that were designed to test the champions extremely. They tested magical ability, intelligent, courage, and resourcefulness. They were extremely dangerous and differ each year. The champions were chosen by the Goblet of Fire, which is a wooden cup that has blue flames. The students would walk up, with their name and school on a sheet of parchment, and drop it into the goblet. Then the goblet returned the names of the three it judged the most worthy participate. However, the tournament was nothing but a mystery until it returned in 1994, when Harry Potter was in school. There were new restrictions as no one under the age of seventeen could compete. They put this in place to attempt to bring the death toll down."

Killian thought that was funny considering what happened during that tournament. "Strangely enough, cheating was so common in the tournament that it could be considered even traditional with it. I'll go over how dangerous these tasks can be, and they all happened during the 1994 tournament. The first task involved dragons, and the champions had to fetch a golden egg it protected. The second task involved taking people that the champion cared about, took them to the bottom of a lake, and the champions had to rescue them. The last task involved a maze with several creatures to overcome."

The part-giant moved some of his hair from his face as he started to finish up the lesson, "The tournament ended after Cedric Diggory's death. Harry Potter was recorded as the winner and given the prize money of 1,000 galleons. Ultimately, with the new safety regulations, the champion's death made the tournament become discontinued again for a long time." Killian knew that it was not permanent since the school here had two and then no more. "Homework is on the board. Class is dismissed." Killian tapped the chalk board and the assignment was written and with a snap of his fingers, the door opened to free the fifth years.
Assignment: RP the lesson.
Extra credit: Write a small essay over what tasks you would implement if you ran a Triwizard Tournament.

Callie walked into the history classroom and took her spot in the room, she had liked learning about the founders and was eager to learn about more things with the schools. She opened her books and notes and placed them down in front of her as the professor got started. A triwizard tournament. That would be pretty amazing really. She was so very eager for it. Callie took her quill and began writing down what was being said, which schools were involved, how long it ran for what had ended it for a period. It was pretty cool, a good test of magic and skill - though dangerous. The lecture was eventually wrapped up and Callie packed up her things and then headed out of the room.

Enoch walked into the history of magic classroom and took his usual spot in the room. He took out his books and notes and listened as the professor went over what the triwizard tournament, what it was, what it had been. Enoch was interested in this, interested in learning about it because he could definitely try for it were it still a thing. He continued to get down what was being said. He wasn’t getting all of what was being said, focusing on the important parts, not wanting to miss anything too vital. Eventually the lesson wrapped up and he was able to pack up his things and head out of the room.

Teddy sat in History of Magic listening to Professor Borisyuk and thinking about how he would absolutely love for the Triwizard tournament to come to New Zealand again. He wrote down notes as the professor spoke, it sounded like a lot of organisation and really dangerous, but that didn't matter. If he ever got the chance, he’d put his name into the Goblet of Fire without a second thought. It was a long lecture but Teddy was able to keep up with the notes. Once the lesson finished, Teddy noted down the homework which he would need to give some time to think about. Once he was done, he packed his quill and parchment away and left the classroom.

Dominic was glad that he was halfway through the semester. It meant that he was halfway through half of his classes, and that was some good progress. Even though his work was piling up, it meant he was halfway with finishing it all, and he couldn’t wait until he could finally enjoy the break. He entered the History of Magic classroom and sat down in his usual spot, before reverting his attention to the front. Despite having already gone over all 4 of the founders, the professor still was going to lecture them. With a small sigh, the Hufflepuff took out his writing equipment and listened.

The professor spoke about what was called the Tri-Wizard Tournament, in which only 3 wizarding schools participated in. A lot of it was quite unbelievable. What reputable school would put their students up to such a task, that could most definitely result in death? He was glad that Hogwarts New Zealand didn't have that in common with Hogwarts Scotland. As the lesson came to an end, Dominic was thankful for this and happily left the classroom once dismissed.

Marley quickly made her way to her History of Magic classroom and took a seat in her usual spot. She then took out the things she needed and placed them on the desk in front of her. Marley couldn't believe they were halfway through the semester, it seemed like a crazy thought if Marley was being honest. The Hufflepuff then moved her attention towards the professor as the professor started off with the lesson. It seemed they were learning about the Triwizard Tournament. While the idea of it seemed fun, the result of possible death seemed scary. Marley made sure to take as many notes as she could as the professor spoke, as she didn't want to miss out on anything important. She also nodded her head throughout the lesson as the professor spoke, as she wanted to show the professor that she was understanding the content that was being said.

It wasn't long before the lesson had come to an end and they were dismissed. Marley quickly took note of what the homework was, as she didn't want to miss out on that nor forget. The Hufflepuff quickly packed up her things as well as tidied up her area. Marley then says a quick and appreciative thanks and goodbye to the professor before heading out of the classroom with her friends and the rest of her classmates.

Walking into the classroom and sitting down, Millie pulled out her textbook and started taking notes as Professor Borisyuk explained the Triwizard Tournament. She’d heard about it before and wasn’t sure she ever wanted to be involved. The tasks were dangerous and that was enough to give anyone pause, especially the age requirements, so she wouldn’t have been old enough right now anyway. Having the tournament reinstated was an interesting moral question though, and she decided she should write an essay on it, as well as talking about the tasks she would implement.
